Tigers picks

A sunny afternoon at Comerica Park, and the pitching card reads like neither manager wanted to name a real starter — Pittsburgh's Kirby Yates has made zero starts in 45 relief appearances, Detroit's Justin Verlander is being activated off the 60-day IL for his first outing since March 30. When both "starters" are short-outing arms, the game gets decided by the bullpens and by which offense shows up. That's the lens I'm betting through. The bullpen math is where I see the edge, and it points at Pittsburgh. The Pirates' high-leverage core is rested — Mason Montgomery (2.76 ERA, 17 saves in 19 chances, the clear closer), Luke Weaver (2.73 ERA, 0.96 WHIP), Gregory Soto, and Yohan Ramírez all last worked Sept 24 with a full day off. Detroit's picture is thinner at the top: Kenley Jansen pitched yesterday, and his own season pattern is a poor back-to-back profile, while long man Andrew Sears threw 41 pitches yesterday and is essentially spent. In a game that hands off early, Pittsburgh's best arms are available and Detroit's closer is a question mark. I'll take the better, hotter team getting a plus price. Pittsburgh is 81-79 to Detroit's 75-85, owns the higher team OPS (.734 vs .721), more runs per game (4.8 vs 4.5), and the better season line with runners in scoring position (.750 OPS vs .711). The Pirates come in 6-4 over their last ten to Detroit's 4-6, and the season series is dead even at 2-2 with identical 20 runs scored — nothing here says one side is meaningfully better than the other, yet the home team is laying juice. The strongest case against me is real: Detroit is home, where they're 41-38, and their season pitching staff (3.67 ERA) is a half-run better than Pittsburgh's (4.17). But those season numbers lean heavily on arms that aren't starting tonight, and Verlander is a cold 179-day-layoff return with no usable 2026 sample to trust. At +102 on the side with the rested bullpen and the better bat, I'll take the Pirates.
