The read
This one comes down to which starter is the wrong fit for the day, and it is Zebby Matthews. Away from Target Field he carries a 6.45 ERA over 11 starts against 2.84 at home, and his one trip to Comerica this year, against this same Keider Montero on June 11, ended with 7 earned runs in 6 innings. His first-inning ERA is 6.30. The pitch that gets him in trouble is the four-seam fastball, which he throws 37.5% of the time and which carries a .404 xwOBA and a .289 batting average against. He allows an 11% barrel rate and a 41.6% hard-hit rate, and left-handed hitters have posted a .794 OPS with 12 homers off him. Detroit's answer is three left-handed bats at the top: McGonigle at .844 against right-handers, Keith at .748 against right-handers and 4-for-7 with a homer in his career against Matthews, and Riley Greene at .863 against right-handers and 10-for-26 with 3 homers over the last week.
Montero is the better pitcher for this building. He owns a 3.24 ERA in 14 home starts with a 1.03 WHIP on the season, a 7% barrel rate and a 36.7% hard-hit rate allowed, both better than Matthews, and a 1.96 first-inning ERA. He threw 6.1 shutout innings against this Minnesota lineup at Comerica in June. The Twins arrive cold at the plate: their nine are 11-for-54 in this series, Josh Bell is 0-for-7 and Royce Lewis 0-for-8 in it, Walker Jenkins is 1-for-17 over the last week, and Ryan Jeffers and his .872 OPS sit for Victor Caratini at .640 in the day game. Underneath the standings, Detroit is plus-50 in run differential and Minnesota is minus-48. The home side is the better club by that measure and it has the stronger starter for the park.
The bullpen picture leans Detroit too, but I am not counting on it. Jansen, Holton, Finnegan, Kinley, Sommers and Waguespack all have two or three days of rest, and the Tigers' pen has a 1.29 ERA over the last five days with no runs allowed in 7 innings this series. Minnesota used Minter for 23 pitches, Hoffman for 18, Gómez for 13 and Morris for 8 last night ahead of a 1:10 start, and Connor Prielipp threw 68 pitches on Monday. Whether Shelton has his top three available today is the unresolved fact in this game. Gómez has worked back-to-back days 15 times this year and Hoffman 13, so they may well go again. If they are limited, that is extra edge. If they are not, the starter and park case above stands on its own.
The risks are real and I want them on the card. Montero's whiff rate by start reads 24, 5, 19, 18, 11, and left-handers went 8-for-18 off him at Cleveland last time out. Minnesota brings six left-side bats, with Brooks Lee 3-for-8 against Montero and Trevor Larnach 2-for-9 with a homer. The Twins lead the season series 10-4. Detroit is 14-27 in one-run games and just lost three walk-offs in Cleveland, so a tight finish is the profile where this ticket is most exposed. Thunderstorms are forecast near first pitch, and a delay that pulls both starters early would change the shape of the game. I expect Detroit's top of the order to get to Matthews' fastball early, Montero to hold this cold Twins lineup down at home, and the Tigers to win the game. At a modest favorite price, that is a ticket I am willing to lay.

HR THREAT
Dillon Dingler
+600Gary's Take I know what the last month looks like. Dingler is hitting under .180 since August and hasn't left the yard in over two weeks, and that's exactly why the number is +600 on a catcher with 26 home runs, 22 of them off right-handed pitching.

Props on this game
3- GARY'S PICKKAELEN CULPEPPERHITS OVER 0.5
Culpepper has been the steadiest contact bat in this Twins lineup since he came up, hitting .296 with a hit in 11 of his last 15 games, and he's slotted fifth today where four trips to the plate are the norm. Yes, Keider Montero has been death on right-handed hitters this season, but he's coming off the roughest start of his year, said afterward the changeup was slipping out of his hand, and he's a pitch-to-contact arm whose contact hasn't been weak lately. Culpepper doesn't need to beat him more than once.
Two or three looks at Montero plus at least one against the Detroit pen is plenty of runway for a hitter who has been spraying singles since he arrived. He took an 0-for last night, and I'd rather buy the bounce than chase a hot one. At -162 I'm paying for a roughly 62 percent proposition on a guy who has cleared this bar closer to 70 percent of the time.
I'll take that.
- GARY'S PICKZEBBY MATTHEWSPITCHER OUTS OVER 16.5
This is a lineup bet as much as a pitcher bet. Detroit is running out a day-game nine with Torres, Torkelson, McKinstry and Valencia all on the bench, which leaves Callahan, Clark, Malgeri and Peck covering the bottom third, and the middle of the order has been cold for weeks. McGonigle, Lee, Keith and Dingler are all hitting under .160 over their last fifteen games.
Riley Greene is the one bat that scares me, and he's one bat. Matthews' road numbers are ugly and I'm not pretending otherwise, but most of that damage has come on the home run ball, and Comerica is the worst park in the league to try to hit one out of, especially with a stiff crosswind today. Take away the long ball and he's a strike-thrower with a real slider and curveball who has walked two batters in his last three starts combined and went 8 1/3 innings two starts ago.
He needs 5 2/3 today. Shelton has shown he'll let him run past 100 pitches when he's efficient, and against a lineup that swings and misses this much, I think he gets there.
- THE LONG SHOTDILLON DINGLERHR OVER 0.5
I know what the last month looks like. Dingler is hitting under .180 since August and hasn't left the yard in over two weeks, and that's exactly why the number is +600 on a catcher with 26 home runs, 22 of them off right-handed pitching. The price is built on the slump.
I'm buying the profile. Zebby Matthews throws his four-seam fastball nearly 40 percent of the time and it's the most hittable pitch in his bag, the kind of pitch that has ended up over the fence six times in his last five starts. Dingler is a fastball hitter who has had success against him in their few meetings, he sat last night, and he gets a fresh day-game look at him two or three times from the fifth spot.
Comerica takes some homers away from everyone, and I've priced that in. At six-to-one I'll bet on 500 at-bats of power over three bad weeks.
