The read
The Tigers and Nationals settle a 1-1 series at Comerica on a cool Wednesday afternoon, with the wind blowing in from left field. Detroit hands the ball to Framber Valdez. Washington opens with lefty Richard Lovelady and will likely turn to someone else early.
The price assumes Detroit has a clear edge on the mound, and I'm not sure it does. Lovelady is an opener. None of his outings since June has gone past 23 pitches, so the real question is who follows him. Cade Cavalli last started Sep 18, and today is his normal turn in the rotation. Over his last five starts he has 38 strikeouts, 6 walks and a 2.00 ERA in 27 innings. Nothing official confirms he pitches today, and that is the risk I'm taking. But the rotation order points to him. If he covers the middle innings, the pitching is roughly even, and the Detroit price is paying for an edge that isn't there.
Detroit's lineup today is thin. Torres and Valencia sit. Peck (.169/.286/.186) and McKinstry (.202/.286/.297) bat eighth and ninth. Detroit scored exactly 1 run in all five of its losses over the last 10 games, including yesterday against this staff, when it had 7 hits and 4 walks and still scored once. Add a 0.95 park factor, 62 degrees, wind blowing in and a 7.5 total, and this looks like a low-scoring game where one swing can decide it. That favors the underdog. Washington also has the better season offense, at 5.1 runs per game to Detroit's 4.5.
The strongest case against me is Detroit's bullpen. Over the last two weeks Detroit's relievers have a 2.72 ERA to Washington's 4.44. Jansen, Waguespack and Holton have rest, while Washington's closer Tolman has pitched 3 of the last 4 days. If Cavalli doesn't pitch, Washington could end up leaning on Perales and his 11.45 ERA. Abrams also has only a .703 OPS against lefties. I'm taking Washington anyway because +134 only has to win about 42.7% of the time. Against a Valdez-led staff and a lineup that has gone quiet this often, a well-rested Cavalli behind the opener gets Washington past that. Wood also has a .429 xwOBA against sinkers over 103 plate appearances, and Valdez throws his sinker 44.5% of the time. I'm betting on the price, not on Washington being the better team.
The research
The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.
STARTER FORM
Framber Valdez: 1.50 ERA over his last 3 starts
1.50Eighteen innings, three earned runs, and 13 strikeouts over his last three starts is what built Framber Valdez's 1.50 ERA, a real workload behind the number, not a short outing. That mark sits 2.56 runs under his 4.06 season ERA. Three starts is a small sample against a full season, so some regression back toward that season number is reasonable. For WSH @ DET, that's a pitcher currently working well beyond his usual level.
PLATOON EDGE
Brady House (bats R) gets a LHP from the 3rd spot
.973Brady House has a .973 OPS against lefties and .575 against righties. Framber Valdez is a lefty, so House hits 3rd in his best matchup. The lefty number comes from 95 AB, fewer than his 212 against righties, so it can move more. For House props, the lefty starter is the whole case, and it weakens once Detroit goes to right-handed relief.
Max Clark (bats L) hits 6th against Richard Lovelady (LHP)
.998Clark hits lefties better than righties, which is unusual for a left-handed batter. The .998 against lefties comes from 52 at-bats, half his 108 against righties, so it will probably come down. Tonight's matchup with Lovelady favors him, but the .689 is the steadier guide to how good he is.
HEAT CHECK
Spencer Torkelson: 1.085 OPS in Last 15 Days
1.085A 1.085 OPS over his last 40 at bats is well above his .753 season mark. He's hit 25 home runs this year, so the surge fits a hitter with real power in his profile. Forty at bats is a short window, and a jump of this size usually fades back toward the season line over time. The total bases number sits at just 0.5 tonight against Washington, a low bar even before factoring in how hot he's been.
COOLING OFF
James Wood: .592 OPS in L15, draws LHP Framber Valdez
.592Wood is at .592 over 43 AB against an .897 season mark, and 43 AB is short for a hitter this good. Framber Valdez is a lefty, and Wood has an .814 OPS against lefties over 185 AB, below his overall mark but solid. His season numbers are the better guide tonight.
FIRST INNING
YRFI watch: first innings have been live on both sides of WSH @ DET
YRFIA run was scored by either team in the first inning in 7 of 10 sampled DET games and 8 of 10 sampled WSH games. 2026 first-inning pitching samples — Framber Valdez: 6.98 ERA, .325 opponent AVG across 29.2 IP, 4 HR; Richard Lovelady: 1.80 ERA, .263 opponent AVG across 5.0 IP, 1 HR.
PARK WEATHER
Wind blowing in 14 mph at Comerica Park tonight
IN 14A 14 mph wind in from left on a 62-degree night should keep fly balls in the park at Comerica. Washington and Detroit will need strings of hits to score. The 7.5 total already expects a quiet night, so any under case depends on the wind holding, and you should check it again near first pitch.
REPLACEMENT
Ben Malgeri (.602 vs LHP) replaces Wenceel Perez at RF tonight
.748With Perez out 12 days with an orbital injury, Malgeri plays right field and bats third against the lefty Lovelady. His .602 against lefties is well under his .748 season line, but it comes from only 65 at-bats. Batting third puts him in RBI spots, but this matchup works against him, so weigh the split alongside his season line.
FANTASY PICKUPS
Framber Valdez
STARTSTART: Valdez's rebound form lines up against a top-heavy Nationals order Why now: Valdez's season ERA sits at 4.06, but his last five starts show a 2.70 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 18 K over 30 innings. Today's Washington order (sourced from 9/22, not yet confirmed) is led by James Wood (.897 OPS) and CJ Abrams (.835) but includes lighter bats further down, such as Vivas (.662) and Nunez (.529). Who it fits: Rostered or streamed SPs in category and points formats looking for ratio help against a lineup with soft lower-order spots. The risk: Wood and Abrams can do damage at the top, and his season ERA still lags his recent form. Watch next: Whether Washington's confirmed lineup today keeps Wood and Abrams in the same spots. Evidence as of Sep 23, 11:00 AM ET. Next-game call closes at Sep 23, 01:10 PM ET.
Richard Lovelady
WATCHWATCH: Lovelady's 'probable start' looks like a bullpen-game opener Why now: Despite a probable-starter tag, Lovelady has made just 5 starts in 36 appearances this season, with 4 saves and 10 holds mixed in. His last three outings covered a combined 2.1 innings, and today's role is listed as an unconfirmed opener-or-bulk assignment. Who it fits: Saves/holds category rosters who already carry him for that role, and streamers who might mistake the probable tag for a full start. The risk: If he ends up throwing extended innings against Detroit's confirmed lineup (Greene, Dingler, Torkelson), the profile changes, but nothing in the listed plan confirms that. Watch next: Whether he throws beyond roughly 2 innings today, which would signal an actual bulk role rather than an opener look. Evidence as of Sep 23, 11:00 AM ET. Next-game call closes at Sep 23, 01:10 PM ET.

Props on this game
1- GARY'S PICKFRAMBER VALDEZK'S UNDER 5.5
I'm taking Framber Valdez under 5.5 strikeouts at -143. At that price I need the under to land about 59% of the time, and his recent starts clear that easily. Over his last eight starts he struck out 8, 2, 3, 5, 0, 5, 3 and 5. That's seven of eight at five or fewer. He averages 4.3 strikeouts a start across 30 starts this season. That comes to 129 strikeouts in 168.2 innings, so he isn't built to rack up strikeouts.
His pitch mix explains why. He throws the sinker 44.5% of the time, and hitters swing and miss at it only 10.7% of the time. He uses it to get ground balls and early contact, with a 1.65 groundout-to-flyout ratio. The curveball is his put-away pitch, and he throws it about three times in ten. Even with a normal workload of 90 to 105 pitches, most plate appearances end with the ball in play. Washington's lineup also has contact hitters where it counts. Jacob Young has 76 strikeouts in 409 at-bats and bats eighth. Andres Chaparro and Yohandy Morales sit in the middle of the order, and neither is an extreme swing-and-miss bat.
The case against me is real. His last start was the 8-strikeout game in Chicago, and his swinging-strike rate hit 42% that night. His curveball drew whiffs on 53% of swings in that outing. Washington's nine strikes out in about 24 of every 100 plate appearances, and James Wood, CJ Abrams and Brady House all strike out a lot. If that curveball is as sharp as it was last time, six is possible. Still, one strong start doesn't outweigh an eight-start pattern and a sinker-first approach. I'll take the under.
