The read

A sunny afternoon at Comerica Park, and the pitching card reads like neither manager wanted to name a real starter — Pittsburgh's Kirby Yates has made zero starts in 45 relief appearances, Detroit's Justin Verlander is being activated off the 60-day IL for his first outing since March 30. When both "starters" are short-outing arms, the game gets decided by the bullpens and by which offense shows up. That's the lens I'm betting through.

The bullpen math is where I see the edge, and it points at Pittsburgh. The Pirates' high-leverage core is rested — Mason Montgomery (2.76 ERA, 17 saves in 19 chances, the clear closer), Luke Weaver (2.73 ERA, 0.96 WHIP), Gregory Soto, and Yohan Ramírez all last worked Sept 24 with a full day off. Detroit's picture is thinner at the top: Kenley Jansen pitched yesterday, and his own season pattern is a poor back-to-back profile, while long man Andrew Sears threw 41 pitches yesterday and is essentially spent. In a game that hands off early, Pittsburgh's best arms are available and Detroit's closer is a question mark.

I'll take the better, hotter team getting a plus price. Pittsburgh is 81-79 to Detroit's 75-85, owns the higher team OPS (.734 vs .721), more runs per game (4.8 vs 4.5), and the better season line with runners in scoring position (.750 OPS vs .711). The Pirates come in 6-4 over their last ten to Detroit's 4-6, and the season series is dead even at 2-2 with identical 20 runs scored — nothing here says one side is meaningfully better than the other, yet the home team is laying juice.

The strongest case against me is real: Detroit is home, where they're 41-38, and their season pitching staff (3.67 ERA) is a half-run better than Pittsburgh's (4.17). But those season numbers lean heavily on arms that aren't starting tonight, and Verlander is a cold 179-day-layoff return with no usable 2026 sample to trust. At +102 on the side with the rested bullpen and the better bat, I'll take the Pirates.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

PLATOON EDGE

  • Brandon Lowe (bats L) draws Justin Verlander (RHP), batting 2nd

    .909

Brandon Lowe owns a .909 OPS against right-handers over 385 at-bats, against .655 the other way over 191. He bats second tonight against RHP Justin Verlander, the side of the platoon he handles. The split is large and the sample is substantial.

  • Ryan O'Hearn (bats L) hits 1st against Justin Verlander (RHP)

    .849

Ryan O'Hearn has a .849 OPS against right-handers over 270 at-bats, against .619 the other way over 126. He hits first tonight against RHP Justin Verlander, who lines the platoon up his way. The sample on the right side is real at 270 at-bats.

HEAT CHECK

  • Spencer Torkelson: 1.158 OPS in Last 15 Days

    1.158

Torkelson's hot run covers just 37 AB, a short window that inflates easily, set against a .752 season OPS. Expect it to drift back toward that baseline. The power carries over: 25 home runs means one good swing clears a 1.5 total-bases line against Pittsburgh, so his night leans on extra-base hits more than steady contact.

REGRESSION

  • Eduardo Valencia: .350 AVG vs .286 xBA

    .286

Eduardo Valencia is hitting .350 against a .286 expected average (xBA) over 129 plate appearances. His wOBA sits at .431 against a .369 expected (xwOBA). Statcast grades the quality of his contact rather than the results, and the expected marks sit below what he has actually posted.

    Kevin McGonigle
    Singles over 0.5

    +110 · CASHED · ACTUAL 1

    Detroit Tigers

Kevin McGonigle is priced at +110 to record at least one single, and that is the side I want. He bats third for Detroit and gets about four and a half trips to the plate, so a singles market has real volume behind it. He is in a strong stretch, hitting .340 with a .944 OPS across his last fifteen games and .305 in September, and his season line against right-handed pitching is .292 with an .864 OPS. Kirby Yates is a right-hander making a spot start after working the year out of the bullpen, so McGonigle should get two looks at him before a Pittsburgh relief corps that threw three arms in yesterday's loss.

The strongest contrary evidence is the series opener, where McGonigle went 0 for 4 with two strikeouts, plus a hitless career at bat against Yates. He also has nights in this month's log where he reached base without a single, and one base knock is a narrow ask against any arm. I am still paying plus money for a middle of the order hitter who is seeing the ball well and gets a short-outing starter and a used bullpen in front of him.

    MLBDetroit Tigers· -162

    Javier Baez
    H+R+RBI over 0.5

    -162 · CASHED · ACTUAL 3

    Detroit Tigers

Javier Baez is priced at -162 to record at least one hit, run or RBI, and I will take the over. He hits ninth for Detroit, so the chances are fewer, but he still gets three or four plate appearances, and his recent log shows he usually finds a way onto the board: a home run with two RBI inside his last five games, and a Detroit lineup around him that has been scoring, eight runs in the series opener. Kirby Yates is a short-outing right-hander, which means Baez likely gets a second look against a Pittsburgh bullpen that has been worked hard in this series.

The case against is real. Baez is one for nine in his career against Yates with four strikeouts, and his season against right-handed pitching is a thin .572 OPS. His recent log also carries hitless nights, including an 0 for 4 and an 0 for 3 with three strikeouts. At -162 the price asks him to clear the number on most nights, and the bottom of the order plus a poor history against this arm is the risk I am accepting.
