The read
Saturday afternoon at Comerica, first place is within shouting distance and Detroit is trying to answer after getting punched in the series opener. This has the feel of a tense divisional game where the starting pitchers control the temperature.
Troy Melton is the separator. He has allowed no earned runs across his last 20 innings, Detroit is 6-0 in his last six starts, and his cutter-slider-splitter mix is built to disrupt a Chicago lineup leaning heavily on left-handed power. I’m willing to bet that Friday’s White Sox eruption does not carry cleanly into the day game.
Anthony Kay has pitched well, but right-handed hitters have produced an .838 OPS against him, and Detroit can send eight right-handed bats into this matchup. Add the Tigers’ fresher, stronger bullpen and home field, and I make Detroit a little better than the -135 price implies. I’ll pay for the moneyline rather than ask this lineup to cover two runs.

Chicago’s left-handed-heavy lineup is dangerous, but Melton’s cutter, slider and splitter give him multiple ways to avoid barrels. Comerica’s dimensions and the wind coming in provide another layer of protection. I’m betting Friday’s offensive eruption meets a much tougher assignment here.

Anthony Kay has allowed right-handed hitters to bat .278 with an .838 OPS, and Torkelson’s 11% chase rate should help him get something in the zone. At plus money, I prefer the single to laying a heavy price on his basic hit prop.
