The read
Two eliminated clubs, two starters throwing their first big league pitch since 2024, and a cool crosswind at Comerica Park tonight. When both starters are on a short leash, the game belongs to the bullpens from the fourth inning on, and that is where Detroit is a different class. The Tigers' relief corps carries a 2.48 ERA and 1.03 WHIP in the tracked sample against Washington's 4.53 and 1.45. Washington's pen has 42 blown saves, seven rookies among nine arms, and its three leverage relievers all worked both Sept 19 and Sept 20 and got scored on both nights. Erik Tolman sits at a 9.00 ERA over the last week and Yovanny Cruz took last night's loss at a 5.27 season ERA. Detroit's top arms rested: Kenley Jansen and Tyler Kinley have two full days off and Jansen has not allowed a run in his last 8.2 innings.
The structure behind the starters favors Detroit too. Hinch announced Keider Montero as the piggyback behind River Ryan, and Montero has four days off since throwing 89 pitches on Sept 16. Washington has no announced bulk arm behind DJ Herz, who has not pitched since Sept 11 and topped out at 65 pitches in rehab. If Herz gives four innings, Butera needs 15 outs from a pen whose rested options are Brad Lord and Josiah Gray. Comerica plays at a 0.95 park factor and suppresses homers, which trims Washington's biggest weapon, and Detroit has made 26 fewer errors this season. Eduardo Valencia, at .339 with a .974 OPS and a .952 OPS against lefties, is the hot bat in a righty-stacked order facing a left-hander.
The honest case against this is Washington's offense. They are the better lineup on paper at .747 OPS and 5.1 runs per game against Detroit's .717 and 4.5, they stack five lefties against a righty debut, and James Wood carries a .956 OPS against right-handers. Detroit also sits Kevin McGonigle, its 6.7 WAR player, and scored one run in three of its last five games. I take Detroit anyway because Ryan's exposure to that lefty lineup is planned to be brief, Abrams drops to a .687 OPS against lefties once Detroit's left-handed relievers enter, and a nine-inning game against a rested, elite pen versus a gassed, historically bad one is the edge that survives the noise. At -134 that is a fair price for the side holding the innings that decide it.
The research
The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.
PLATOON EDGE
Daylen Lile (bats L) hits 2nd against River Ryan (RHP)
.794.794 OPS vs righties over 425 at-bats is well above his .603 vs lefties in 157, and tonight's righty starter River Ryan plus the 2nd spot in the order put him right in that sweet spot. Both samples are sizable, so this reads as a real split, not a short-run blip. Worth factoring in when weighing his individual markets tonight, though it won't hold against every pitcher he faces.
CJ Abrams (bats L) hits 4th against River Ryan (RHP)
.887.887 OPS vs righties in 373 at-bats clears his .703 vs lefties in 186 by a wide margin, and he draws right-hander River Ryan tonight while batting cleanup. Both samples are substantial, so this looks like a genuine strength, not a small-sample blip. Hitting fourth against a pitcher who plays into his better hand is worth factoring into how his game gets framed tonight.
HEAT CHECK
Riley Greene: 1.107 OPS in Last 15 Days
1.1071.107 OPS over his last 15 days (54 at-bats) towers over his .856 season mark, and it's a real two-week run, not a one-game blip, from a hitter already sitting on 21 home runs. Some pullback toward the season number is normal, but the power keeps his floor high. For tonight's 1.5 total-bases line, a hitter this hot brings extra margin to clear it.
Spencer Torkelson: 1.062 OPS in Last 15 Days
1.0621.062 OPS over his last 15 days is way up from his .750 season mark, the widest gap in this group. But it's only 36 at-bats, the smallest sample here, so it reads as a hot streak rather than a new level, even with 24 home runs already this year. Expect more regression back toward .750 than similar cases. For tonight's 0.5 total-bases line, the hot form still helps, just with more uncertainty behind it.
COOLING OFF
Dillon Dingler: .469 OPS in L15 — draws LHP DJ Herz
.469.469 OPS over his last 38 at-bats is a real dip from his .751 season mark. Tonight adds another layer against him: he faces lefty DJ Herz, and he's hit just .602 vs lefties over 168 at-bats this season, clearly his weaker side. With the slump and an unfavorable handedness matchup both pointing the same direction, there's less reason to expect a quick bounce-back tonight.
James Wood: .660 OPS in L15 — draws RHP River Ryan
.660.660 OPS over his last 41 at-bats trails his excellent .903 season mark, though even a down stretch for him is still respectable. Tonight he faces right-hander River Ryan, and he's posted a .956 OPS vs righties over 307 at-bats this season — his clear strength all year. This looks more like a short slump than any real change in ability, especially against this type of pitching.
REPLACEMENT
Ben Malgeri (.574 vs LHP) replaces Wenceel Perez at RF tonight
.693.574 OPS vs lefties trails his .693 overall mark, and filling in for Perez (out 10 days, orbital) tonight puts him fifth against lefty DJ Herz — a tough draw. That split comes from just 63 at-bats, small enough to tighten up either way, but it fits a fill-in profile rather than an everyday answer against southpaws. Treat tonight's fifth spot as a lighter one for Washington until Perez returns.
Keibert Ruiz (.778 vs RHP) replaces Drew Millas at C tonight
.777Taking over from Millas (out 11 days, finger) at catcher, Ruiz's .778 OPS vs righties is essentially identical to his .777 season mark, so facing River Ryan doesn't create a special edge. That consistency across a 229-at-bat sample makes the number stable — he just hits about the same regardless of pitcher. Batting eighth caps his run-production upside tonight even with the everyday catcher back in the lineup.
REGRESSION
Eduardo Valencia: .339 AVG vs .265 xBA
.265Valencia's .339 average is running way ahead of the .265 his actual contact quality supports, and the wOBA gap says the same thing — .417 actual against a .342 expected mark. That's not a one-game fluke, it's spread across 115 plate appearances, but Statcast's expected stats exist because results tend to drift back toward how hard and well a guy is actually hitting the ball. Against Detroit tonight, treat his hot batting line with some skepticism — the underlying quality of contact hasn't caught up to the numbers on the back of his card.
Detroit Tigers are 15-27 in one-run games (.357 win rate)
15-27Detroit Tigers are 15-27 in one-run games in the 2026 regular season (42 completed games). They are 58-56 in their other 114 completed games.
