The read

Thursday night on the South Side, and the Tigers roll into Rate Field having won seven of ten while the White Sox limp home after Cleveland shoved them out of first place for the first time since the Fourth of July. Framber Valdez against Erick Fedde in the opener of four, and the board calls it a coin flip.

I am taking Detroit, and the pick lives in innings six through nine. Fedde has not finished the sixth in any of his last five starts, so this game is headed to a Chicago bullpen its own manager admits he has been running at playoff intensity. Grant Taylor has been scored on in four straight outings, Sean Newcomb in five of six and told the Sun-Times he has not been himself, and Hagen Smith threw 110 pitches over four appearances in seven days including 30 last night. Will Venable called sending Smith out for a second inning the most-debated decision he made. What is left is Bryan Hudson, Jordan Hicks, and Noah Schultz with two big-league outings this season. Across the field, Detroit's relievers have a 2.13 ERA in the tracked games, Kenley Jansen sits on two full days off with nine straight scoreless outings, and Holton, Sommers, and Kinley each threw under 25 pitches Wednesday. The other half of the read is the starter my briefing had backwards. Valdez has thrown 13 innings without an earned run over his last two turns, pitches to ground balls at a 1.61 GO/AO, and allows barrels at 5.6 percent against Fedde's 8.2. The market is paying a small premium for Fedde's 3.97 ERA, and his 4.67 xERA says that is the fragile number on the board.

The best argument against me is real. Venable stacked seven right-handed bats against a lefty whose most-used pitch, the sinker, is also his worst, and Miguel Vargas at a .959 OPS against lefties and Randal Grichuk at .989 are exactly the hitters who punish it. Chicago is 43-31 at home and has beaten Detroit six of nine. If Vargas and Grichuk get to Valdez early, this card is cooked. I took the Tigers anyway because six innings of a rested Valdez is a smaller exposure than four innings of a pen that has been bleeding for a week, and because Detroit is scoring 5.8 a game over its last ten while Chicago has lost seven of its last nine. At -104 on a game I read as leaning Detroit, the price is on my side.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

STARTER FORM

  • Framber Valdez: 1.42 ERA over his last 3 starts

    1.42

Framber Valdez has a 1.42 ERA over his last 3 starts, allowing 3 earned runs with 10 strikeouts in 19 innings. That is 2.59 below his 4.01 season ERA, but the listed DET at CHW matchup does not establish his opponent.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

  • White Sox are 6-3 vs Tigers this season

    6-3

The White Sox are 6-3 against Detroit across nine meetings this season and won the last one 7-5. No pitcher, venue or game-by-game context explains that record or ties it to tonight in Chicago.

REPLACEMENT

    .590

Zach McKinstry inherits RF and bats sixth tonight against RHP Erick Fedde. His .640 OPS against RHP in 287 AB is above his .590 season OPS; Wenceel Perez has been on the injury report for six days with an orbital issue.

    TOMMY PHAMWALKS UNDER 0.5
    MLBChicago White Sox· -200

    Tommy Pham
    Walks under 0.5

    -200 · LOST · ACTUAL 1

    Chicago White Sox

Pham is in the lineup again after coming off the injured list yesterday, and his one game back told you everything about how he is trying to hit right now. Four at-bats, zero walks, and a three-run homer on a pitch he decided to do damage with rather than take one. That is consistent with where his whole season has gone in a jarringly small sample: one walk in eighteen at-bats, and the trend on him shows a walk in just one of his last eleven games. He is hitting second tonight and projects for close to two plate appearances, which is not much runway for a free pass to sneak in even if the approach shifts.

The case against me is that Pham built a decade-long reputation as a hitter who works counts, and if that version of him shows up instead of the hacker he has been the last few weeks, a walk against Valdez is not a stretch — Valdez has issued 60 walks in 163.2 innings this year and can lose the strike zone in stretches. But I am betting on the version of Pham that is actually on the field right now, not the one from a few years back, and everything about his return swing says he is up there to do damage on the first good pitch, not to grind an at-bat. At -200 for a hitter averaging close to one walk a month, the number is priced for exactly what he has been doing.

  • THE LONG SHOT
    SPENCER TORKELSONHR OVER 0.5
    MLBDetroit Tigers· +550

    Spencer Torkelson
    HR over 0.5

    +550 · LOST · ACTUAL 0

    Detroit Tigers

Torkelson is running as hot as anyone in this matchup right now. He has four home runs in his last fifteen games, a 1.005 OPS in September, and two homers in his last seven games alone. Almost all of his power this season comes against right-handed pitching — 21 of his 24 home runs — and Fedde is a right-hander who has already allowed fifteen home runs in fourteen starts this year, with an 8.2 percent barrel rate allowed that runs noticeably hotter than what Valdez is giving up on the other side. Both lineups hit in the same hitter-friendly Rate Field tonight. A price of plus-550 is asking you to believe this happens something like once every six or seven games; Torkelson has already cleared that bar four times in his last fifteen.

The honest pushback is that Torkelson is 0-for-9 in his career against Fedde specifically. That is too small a sample to build a real case around, but it is the one data point that actually pits these two against each other, and I am not going to pretend it isn't there. Between a hitter on a genuine power run against right-handed pitching and a pitcher who has had trouble keeping the ball in the park all year, I am taking the long shot here instead of passing.
