The read
Saturday night settles over Kauffman Stadium with Kansas City chasing a seventh straight victory and Detroit trying to stop a three-game slide. I’m backing the Royals ML at -104. Kansas City’s streak was built partly against weaker competition, so I’m not betting the streak by itself. I’m betting the way the Royals are currently playing: 4.9 runs scored and 3.5 allowed per game over their last 10, compared with Detroit’s 4.0 scored and 4.8 allowed.
Michael Wacha is the hinge of the card. His 3.58 ERA and 1.15 WHIP both better Drew Anderson’s 4.01 and 1.30, and Wacha has a 1.29 ERA with Kansas City winning both of his starts against Detroit this season. Anderson deserves respect after posting a 2.84 ERA across his last three starts, but he has completed five innings only once in his five 2026 starts. That matters because Kansas City’s lineup has recently produced a .411 expected weighted on-base average with a 15.3% whiff rate, while Detroit sits at .355 with a 21.8% whiff rate. The Royals are putting together the better at-bats entering this matchup.
There are real reasons this stays near a coin flip. Detroit owns the better season bullpen ERA, 3.32 to 4.55, and Maikel Garcia’s fresh absence removes a productive bat from Kansas City’s lineup. Still, the Royals have committed no errors over their last seven games while Detroit has made five, and Wacha offers the better chance to shorten Kansas City’s exposure to its bullpen. I’m not paying -176 for the Royals’ run-line cushion when the outright win is available at -104. My read is that Kansas City’s current contact, Wacha’s steadier starting profile and its cleaner execution are enough to keep this run going.
