The read

The rubber match is set at PNC Park, with Paul Skenes and Jackson Jobe carrying two very different levels of certainty to the mound. I’m backing Pittsburgh on the moneyline because the starting-pitching advantage is substantial enough to lay this price without asking the Pirates to cover a run line.

Skenes has a 3.88 ERA and 3.13 xERA across 25 starts and 134.2 innings. Jobe has worked only 8.2 innings in two starts, producing a 6.23 ERA and 7.66 xERA. Skenes’ recent 5.79 ERA over three starts is a legitimate concern, and I’m not brushing aside the nine walks in 14 innings. But the season-long pitch results remain strong: his four-seamer has allowed a .299 xwOBA, while Jobe’s four-seamer sits at .501. Skenes has also held left-handed hitters to a .649 OPS, an important matchup against a Detroit lineup containing five left-handed bats. Jobe has allowed a .979 OPS to lefties, although that figure comes from only 23 at-bats and needs to be treated cautiously.

Pittsburgh has also produced the stronger season line against right-handed pitching, batting .261 with a .764 OPS compared with Detroit’s .248 and .738. Oneil Cruz returned with a home run yesterday, giving this confirmed Pirates lineup another demonstrated power threat against a starter who allowed nine hits, six earned runs and two homers in his last outing. The bullpens keep me away from Pittsburgh -1.5: Detroit’s current relief group owns a 3.23 ERA, while Pittsburgh’s is at 3.51, and PNC Park carries a pitcher-friendly 0.94 factor. This sets up as a spot where getting the winner matters more than demanding separation. I’ll pay -154 for Skenes, the better right-handed-pitching matchup and home field, while protecting the ticket if Pittsburgh gets it done by a single run.
