Cardinals picks

A rising rookie left-hander who keeps working deep meets a big-name arm on a deliberate short leash, and the market is asking the underdog to win only about 42% of the time — that's a number worth attacking. The starter matchup is the sharpest lever on the board, and it points to St. Louis. Quinn Mathews enters on five days' rest after a 7-inning, 96-pitch outing, and his previous five starts all reached at least 5 innings at 96-102 pitches with a roughly 2.4 ERA across that span. Dustin May is the opposite profile: his last five starts averaged under four innings, and he was capped at 36 pitches on Sept 22 — a workload-managed arm being kept fresh for October. That gap matters because it dictates bullpen exposure. Mathews projects six innings; May projects closer to four, meaning the Cardinals get into Milwaukee's bullpen innings earlier than the Brewers get into St. Louis'. The platoon and lineup structure reinforce it. May carries a real, well-sampled left-handed weakness — .272/.753 with 8 home runs against lefties (313 AB) versus .236/.649 against righties — and the Cardinals stack five left-handed bats into it (Wetherholt, Burleson, Gorman, Torres, Church). Better still, the one Cardinal who is platoon-limited against lefties, Alec Burleson, faces the right-hander May, so his vulnerability simply doesn't apply and he lands on his strong side. Meanwhile Milwaukee's confirmed order is a rest-heavy one, with Yelich, Mitchell and Frelick out, Ortiz sidelined, and Vaughn on the IL — seating Lockridge (just recalled), Lara, and Hamilton. Here's the case against me, and I'll take it straight: Milwaukee is the far better team. It's 101-59, 53-26 at home, 8-2 over its last 10, owns this series 9-2, fields a relief corps at 2.91 ERA against St. Louis' 3.31, and has Jackson Chourio slugging nearly .980 against lefties at a park where he's hit .300. That's why the line is -164 — the market is paying for the season-long gap. But it isn't paying nearly enough attention to tonight's specific edges: the durable starter, the platoon, and the full lineup against a rested one. At +138, that's the value side.
