The read: Cardinals ML

Overcast skies, a light breeze toward left, and two call-up lefties taking the ball in the first half of a Cincinnati doubleheader. This has the loose, unpredictable feel of an August matinee at Great American Ball Park.

I’m backing the lineup I trust more. Kent Emanuel is making his first major-league start at 34 against a Cardinals order loaded with right-handed bats, while Jordan Walker and Alec Burleson are driving the ball exceptionally well. St. Louis has scored 19 runs over its last two games; Cincinnati has managed six over its last three.

Quinn Mathews carries real walk risk against a dangerous Reds lineup, which keeps me away from the run line. But he offers more bat-missing upside than Emanuel, and St. Louis owns the stronger, fresher bullpen if this becomes the short-start game I expect. At essentially a pick’em price, the Cardinals moneyline is my $100 play.

The read: Cardinals ML

The lights come on at Great American Ball Park after a tight opener, with two division rivals resetting for the second half of a long doubleheader day. Cincinnati’s lineup is searching for a spark; St. Louis is trying to keep its August push moving.

Andre Pallante is the separator. He has limited Cincinnati to one earned run across two starts this season, owns a 2.55 road ERA, and is built to suppress this park by keeping the ball on the ground. The Reds have scored only 2.7 runs per game over their last 10, while Dane Myers and Tyler Stephenson—two of their few productive bats lately—aren’t starting tonight.

Lowder’s home form makes the Cardinals’ run line too ambitious, especially after St. Louis used its best relievers in the opener. But Burleson is scorching, Walker is driving the baseball, and Pallante gives me the better path through six innings. At only -116, I’ll pay the modest price and back the better starter and hotter club to win outright.
