Overcast skies, a light breeze toward left, and two call-up lefties taking the ball in the first half of a Cincinnati doubleheader. This has the loose, unpredictable feel of an August matinee at Great American Ball Park.
I’m backing the lineup I trust more. Kent Emanuel is making his first major-league start at 34 against a Cardinals order loaded with right-handed bats, while Jordan Walker and Alec Burleson are driving the ball exceptionally well. St. Louis has scored 19 runs over its last two games; Cincinnati has managed six over its last three.
Quinn Mathews carries real walk risk against a dangerous Reds lineup, which keeps me away from the run line. But he offers more bat-missing upside than Emanuel, and St. Louis owns the stronger, fresher bullpen if this becomes the short-start game I expect.
