The read
Friday night under the lights at Busch, 93 degrees and dead calm, two clubs already eliminated playing out the string — and one of them is starting a pitcher who isn't allowed to finish the fourth inning. That's the whole game for me. Kyle Leahy's last three starts went 3.0, 2.2 and 3.0 innings on 51, 55 and 38 pitches, and Field Level Media reported on September 18 that the short leash is by design. Zoom out and it's a ten-start slope: 6, 6, 6, 5, 5, 5, 4, 3, 2.2, 3. Meanwhile Cade Cavalli has thrown 72 innings across 12 starts since mid-July and allowed 17 earned runs — a 2.13 mark — with 43 strikeouts in 28 innings over his last five. So St. Louis needs roughly six innings from its bullpen tonight; Washington needs about three. When both pens are broken, the one asked to cover twice the ground is the one that breaks first.
And it's not just volume, it's who's covering it. Riley O'Brien has allowed 12 earned runs in 10.1 innings over the last 30 days with a zero K-BB%, and Marmol confirmed Thursday there's no change at closer. George Soriano has walked 11 in 8.2 innings in that same window. Gordon Graceffo is genuinely good — 2.66 on the season, no runs allowed across 11.2 innings in a month — but he's never been observed past 48 pitches in relief this year. He bridges two innings, not five. The other piece: Leahy has been hit .312 with an .852 OPS by left-handed bats over 279 at-bats, and Washington stacks Wood, Lile and Abrams into the top four. Abrams owns a .894 OPS against righties with 23 of his 30 homers there. That's the exact lineup you don't want at the exact time you're handing the ball to the wrong guys.
The best argument against me is real: Washington's pen set the all-time blown-save record and owns the worst relief WAR in the sport, and St. Louis has been squaring the ball up — 48.1% hard-hit over the last three games against Washington's 41.7%. Fine. But the market is paying full price for a 3.33 ERA that the contact quality says is closer to 4.77, and it's asking me to lay nothing to get the better arm and the shorter bullpen ask. At -110, I'll take that every time.
The research
The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

Alec Burleson (bats L) hits 3rd against Cade Cavalli (RHP)
.943Burleson owns a .943 OPS against right-handers over 392 AB, compared with .561 in 185 AB facing lefties. Cavalli throws right-handed, so the third spot places the larger and stronger half of his split near the top.
COOLING OFF
Jordan Walker: .470 OPS in Last 15 Days
.470Jordan Walker has a .470 OPS over the last 15 days across 48 AB. That is 0.348 below his .818 season OPS.
BALLPARK
At Busch Stadium, Kyle Leahy pitches to a 2.79 ERA
2.79Kyle Leahy has a 2.79 ERA over 71.0 innings in 15 games at Busch Stadium, versus 3.94 across 64.0 innings elsewhere; hitters bat .263 off him there. The split does not establish whether the venue or his performance explains it.
