The read
Under the lights at Busch Stadium, the Cardinals and Giants meet in the middle game of their series. I’m taking St. Louis at -162 because its starting-pitching advantage connects to an offensive matchup I trust. The Cardinals’ starter brings a 3.45 ERA and 1.23 WHIP against San Francisco’s 4.82 ERA and 1.29 WHIP. The more specific opening is the Giants starter’s .898 OPS allowed to left-handed hitters. St. Louis lists lefties at leadoff and in the third spot, where it has a hitter with a .939 OPS against right-handed pitching across 382 at-bats. That combination carries my case for the Cardinals generating an early advantage.
The game still has to survive the handoff to relief. The listed closer comparison gives St. Louis some support: a 4.13 ERA and 1.28 WHIP against 4.65 and 1.45 for San Francisco. Both pitched September 12 and 14, so I see a modest performance advantage without assuming superior availability. The updated forecast includes showers, and an interruption could shorten either starter’s outing. That increases the importance of the bullpen and keeps the starting-pitching matchup from carrying the entire decision. St. Louis has a credible route through both portions of the game.
The strongest argument for the Giants is their starter’s .471 OPS allowed to right-handed hitters across 80 at-bats, with several right-handers in the Cardinals’ order. The starters’ WHIPs are also fairly close, which leaves a believable path for San Francisco to keep this competitive. And the .898 OPS against lefties covers just 91 at-bats; that split deserves caution. I still take St. Louis because the relevant lineup production supports its pitching advantage, with relief providing another modest positive. I judge that combination strong enough to pay -162, while the Giants’ counterarguments keep my conviction measured.

Props on this game
3- GARY'S PICKBLADE TIDWELLPITCHER WALKS OVER 1.5
Tidwell's command has been the real story of his rookie season, and it hasn't gotten better as the innings have piled up. He's walked at least two batters in four of his last seven starts, including a five-walk night against the Pirates on September 3 and another five-walk outing against Arizona before that. His last look at this same Cardinals lineup, on September 9, still cost him two walks in just four innings before he was pulled early.
St. Louis draws its walks as a team, sitting north of three a game, and this particular order is loaded with hitters who work counts — Herrera, Burleson and Walker have combined for well over 150 walks on the year. Tidwell doesn't need to be disastrous for this to hit, just consistent with what he's already shown. Two walks has been the rule more often than the exception his last several times out, and I'll take that pattern again tonight.
- THE LONG SHOTJORDAN WALKERHR OVER 0.5
Walker is sitting on 28 home runs, and that number tells me more than his last week does. The bulk of that power has actually come against right-handed pitching — 19 of his 28 homers, roughly one every 22 at-bats from that side — and Blade Tidwell is a right-hander who has allowed a home run in five of his last seven starts. It's a warm night at Busch Stadium with the wind blowing out, the kind of air that helps a ball travel for a hitter with Walker's strength.
He's cooled off over his last 15 games with just one homer in that stretch, and I won't pretend that's irrelevant — but home run rate for a hitter with this much raw power shouldn't be judged on two quiet weeks. At plus-550 I only need this to happen once, and Walker's season-long production against this handedness gives him a legitimate path to it.
- GARY'S PICKGRANT MCCRAYH+R+RBI OVER 0.5
This line clears with a single hit, run, or RBI, and McCray gave me exactly that Monday night, doubling and coming around to score against St. Louis. His season line is rough across the board, but the matchup tonight plays to his one real advantage: Andre Pallante has been considerably more hittable against left-handed batters this year, a .696 OPS allowed compared to .623 against right-handers, and McCray hits left-handed.
He's back in the lineup every day since rejoining the club and hitting in front of Christian Koss, who's carrying a .343 average over his last two weeks — a lineup spot that gives him a real chance to score even on a quiet night at the plate. I only need one thread to come through here, and between the platoon matchup and the low bar, I like McCray to find it.
