The read
The 100-win Brewers come home under a closed roof at American Family Field to open the final weekend of the regular season. Robert Gasser faces Michael McGreevy and a Cardinals club that is playing out a rebuild. My bet rests on how McGreevy matches up with this lineup. McGreevy's 3.84 ERA sits on a 5.32 xERA and a 41% hard-hit rate, so the market is treating a fragile number as solid, and that keeps -188 from being an inflated price. The matchup makes it sharper. Left-handers have a .759 OPS against McGreevy and account for 14 of the 21 homers McGreevy has allowed, and Milwaukee sends seven left-handed bats to the plate. Bauers has a .447 xwOBA against the 4-seamer, McGreevy's most-used pitch, and an .947 OPS with runners in scoring position. McGreevy's night ERA is 4.69.
The other half of my read is that St. Louis has not shown it can cash in. The Cardinals have scored 3.0 runs per game over their last 10 and gone 14-for-72 with runners in scoring position. Walker, their best right-handed bat against lefties, is 3-for-34 since Sep 13. The late innings favor Milwaukee too. Megill, Uribe and Hall all had a full day off after Wednesday outings of 11, 14 and 36 pitches. On the St. Louis side, Stanek has pitched two straight days and has gone 0 of 15 on a third straight day this season. That leaves O'Brien, who carries a 1.55 WHIP over the last 30 days, to cover the tight spots.
The best argument against Milwaukee is that the Brewers are in October mode. They clinched the No. 1 overall seed Thursday night, flew home, and are resting Chourio. Ashby, Drohan, Senzatela, Romero and Patrick all worked Thursday, so the 6th and 7th innings could fall to Harrison or to Wilson, who has not pitched in the majors since Aug 30. Gasser's 1.71 ERA run also came without any improvement in strikeouts or walks. I am taking Milwaukee anyway. A tired middle relief group only costs the Brewers if the other lineup can punish it, and this Cardinals offense has not shown it can. The lineup Milwaukee runs out tonight is still its regulars, apart from Chourio. I am passing on -1.5 because the Brewers won by 2 or more in only 4 of their last 10. Moneyline is the play.

HEAT CHECK
Brice Turang: 1.156 OPS in Last 15 Days
1.156Brice Turang has a 1.156 OPS in 39 at-bats over the last 15 days against .810 for the season. His season mark was already solid, so his floor is higher than most hot hitters, though a 39 at-bat run will likely come down some. With 20 home runs and a total-bases line of 1.5 against St. Louis, he is a good hitter in form.
COOLING OFF
Jordan Walker: .382 OPS in Last 15 Days
.382Jordan Walker is at a .382 OPS over the last 15 days in 37 at-bats, 0.415 below his .797 season mark. The season line says he has been a solid hitter, and 37 at-bats is a short window for a slide this steep. Expect movement back up, and against Milwaukee a cold two weeks can leave his props cheaper than his season deserves.
FIRST INNING
MIL have gone quiet in the 1st: runs in 1 of their last 10
1/10MIL scored in the first inning in 1 of the 10 sampled games. 2026 first-inning pitching samples — Robert Gasser: 2.75 ERA, .216 opponent AVG across 19.2 IP, 1 HR; Michael McGreevy: 4.20 ERA, .278 opponent AVG across 30.0 IP, 4 HR.
HEAD-TO-HEAD
Brewers are 8-2 vs Cardinals this season
8-2Milwaukee has beaten St. Louis in eight of ten meetings, most recently 8-4. The sheet has no pitchers or venues for those games, so it shows who won without the why. Tonight's starters and the Brewers being at home are what to price, with the series record as a tiebreaker at most.
TEAM RECORD
Brewers 6-2 in Robert Gasser's last 8 starts
6-2Milwaukee has won six of Robert Gasser's last eight starts, with no current streak, so the wins are spread across the stretch. Eight games is a small sample. At home against St. Louis, it points to a steady trend behind him, and the thing to compare is how much the price already rates him.

2- GARY'S PICKSAL FRELICKH+R+RBI UNDER 1.5
Sal Frelick under 1.5 hits plus runs plus RBIs at -143. Frelick bats eighth tonight, so he gets three or four trips to the plate, and the lineup around him gives him little help. His season line against right-handers is a .649 OPS with three homers. His expected contact numbers sit almost exactly on top of his actual ones, so no hidden bad luck is waiting to turn over. Over his last 15 games he has averaged under one in this combined stat, and he has scored once this month.
The spots around him make it harder. To score, Frelick needs David Hamilton behind him, and Hamilton has three hits over the last 15 days. To drive runs in, he needs Joey Ortiz and Luis Lara on base ahead of him, and Lara is 2 for 14 over the past week. Frelick rarely strikes out and puts the ball in play, which keeps a single in reach. A lone single does not cash the over, though. From the eighth spot he needs two hits, or a hit plus a run or RBI.
The case against is real. McGreevy has been more hittable by left-handed bats all season, with most of the homers he has allowed coming from that side. This is a hitter-leaning park against a Cardinals club I already faded on the moneyline. Frelick also got to two on Thursday in Philadelphia with a double and an RBI, and his one career look at McGreevy was a double, though that is a two-plate-appearance sample and tells me nothing. I trust his own profile against righties over the pitcher's split, and -143 is a fair price for a bottom-of-the-order bat who has cleared this number only occasionally in September.
- GARY'S PICKROBERT GASSERPITCHER WALKS OVER 1.5
Robert Gasser over 1.5 walks at +117. His September ERA looks clean, but the free passes never went away. He walked three at Baltimore in his last start, two against the Reds, two in each of his two outings against the Cubs, and four against Seattle before that. The run prevention improved while the walks stayed where they were. Brewer Fanatic flagged this in its Game 3 discussion, noting he issued a fair number of walks during the stretch. Gasser said himself that his changeup carried him at Baltimore once his command began to falter.
The handedness mix pushes the same way. Right-handed hitters have handled Gasser far better than lefties this season, and St. Louis puts six right-handed bats in the order tonight. That is the side where he has had to work around hitters more carefully. Stu Scheurwater has the plate, and his games have run a touch above league average in walks. At plus money, I only need Gasser's usual pattern to hold for two free passes.
The strongest case against is the setting. Milwaukee has the No. 1 seed locked, and Gasser is lined up for an October start, so a short tune-up would cut the number of batters he faces. The Cardinals are also a low-walk offense as a team, drawing a bit over three a game. Jordan Walker is chasing through a deep slump, and Victor Scott II and Pedro Pages rarely work counts. I still like the price. Even in his shorter September outings of four and five innings, Gasser reached two walks, so a trimmed pitch count does not take this away from him.
