Rockies picks

The Rockies and White Sox meet again at Rate Field, with Chicago still chasing the division and Colorado looking to answer Friday’s loss. I’m taking Colorado at +194 because its pitching options after Jose Quintana make this a more competitive matchup than the underdog price suggests. Ryan Feltner has five full days off and has allowed one earned run across 12 relief innings. That sample is small, but his demonstrated ability to cover multiple innings matters here. Quintana does not have to carry the entire pitching assignment for Colorado to stay competitive. Chicago’s late innings also require some judgment. Grant Taylor, Bryan Hudson and Hagen Smith all pitched yesterday. Taylor needed only 17 pitches and Hudson 13, so I would not label either unavailable. Still, Taylor has returned the next day after comparable workloads in four of 17 opportunities. Chicago has rested alternatives, but assuming its strongest relief sequence would overstate the certainty. Colorado has Brennan Bernardino coming off just three pitches, Jordan Romano with a full day off, and Feltner as a possible bridge. My read is that Colorado has enough usable pitching to give its offense a legitimate opportunity to decide this game. The strongest argument against this ticket is Chicago’s starting advantage and the favorable left-handed pitching matchups for Miguel Vargas and Randal Grichuk. Davis Martin has the stronger season performance, and Colorado could fall behind before its relief depth matters. I’m accepting that risk because Martin’s latest outing also ended at 70 pitches, while Hunter Goodman and TJ Rumfield have documented production away from Coors Field. Martin’s 4.66 xERA against a 3.84 ERA adds a price caution: paying heavily for the ERA alone would overvalue that number. It does not predict tonight’s performance. At +194, Colorado’s credible bulk relief and middle-order offense make the upset worth backing.
