The read

Friday night at Rate Field: the White Sox come home one day after punching their first postseason ticket since 2021, still a game behind Cleveland with three to play, and a 57-102 Rockies club is standing in the way. I'm laying the run with Chicago, and two things carry it. The first is where Tomoyuki Sugano gets hurt. Lefties have hit .862 OPS off Sugano, with 21 home runs in 326 at-bats, and Chicago runs seven left-side bats out there tonight. A 11.8% barrel rate and 1.89 HR/9 produce crooked innings, not scattered singles. The 5.36 ERA against a 6.50 xERA tells me the market isn't overpaying for Sugano's surface numbers. That's context on the price, not the whole case.

The second is Colorado's late innings. Jordan Romano threw 23 pitches yesterday and has come back the next day after an outing like that only 3 of 11 times. Jimmy Herget threw 49 and is 1 of 8 in that spot. Past Brennan Bernardino and Ryan Feltner, the bridge runs through Zach Agnos and Jaden Hill, at 8.76 and 8.00 ERAs over the last 30 days. That's where a Chicago lead grows. Chicago's pen is the opposite: Grant Taylor has five full days off and Hagen Smith sits at a 1.72 ERA over the last 30. The venue backs it up too: 46-32 at home against a team that's 25-53 on the road. All six of Chicago's wins in its last 10 came by two or more runs.

The best argument against is Sean Burke's command. The Aug 26 start was 3 innings on 92 pitches, and walks are the realistic way Colorado builds traffic. Venable has hooked starters early all month, which can push innings to Sean Newcomb (9.28 ERA over the last 30 days). As the home team, Chicago also doesn't bat in the bottom of the ninth when ahead, which caps the margin. I'm taking it anyway because Burke has still held lefties to a .710 OPS, and because this game gets away from Colorado in the middle innings after Sugano leaves, when the Rockies have to cover with the thinnest part of a tired pen. At -110 I'd rather own that path than lay -252 on the moneyline.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

FIRST INNING

  • YRFI watch: first innings have been live on both sides of COL @ CHW

    YRFI

A run was scored by either team in the first inning in 7 of 10 sampled CHW games and 9 of 10 sampled COL games. 2026 first-inning pitching samples — Sean Burke: 5.19 ERA, .265 opponent AVG across 26.0 IP, 2 HR; Tomoyuki Sugano: 6.43 ERA, .316 opponent AVG across 28.0 IP, 10 HR.

TEAM RECORD

  • Rockies 2-6 in Tomoyuki Sugano's last 8 starts

    2-6

Colorado has won two of Tomoyuki Sugano's last eight starts and has lost his last three. Team record also reflects the offense and bullpen behind him, and eight games is a small sample. Against the White Sox, weigh the pitching matchup itself above the recent run of losses.

SEAN BURKEPITCHER HITS ALLOWED OVER 3.5
    MLBChicago White Sox· -135

    Sean Burke
    Pitcher Hits Allowed over 3.5

    -135 · CASHED · ACTUAL 4

    Chicago White Sox

I'm taking Sean Burke over 3.5 hits allowed at -135. This line asks for four hits against a Colorado lineup that puts the ball in play. The Rockies strike out less often than league average, and the top of tonight's order is built on contact. Jake McCarthy is hitting .295 and has been swinging well all month. TJ Rumfield is at .297 with a .304 average against righties. Troy Johnston hits .304 off right-handers. Colorado hits better against righties than lefties overall, and Burke is a righty.

Burke's own history points the same way. He has allowed four or more hits in most of his starts this season. His best recent outing, six innings against Detroit, still came with five hits. He allowed seven against the Mets and eight against Pittsburgh in barely more than one inning. He has also been more hittable at Rate Field than on the road all year, with a 4.50 ERA at home and a 2.72 ERA away, and this park plays toward hitters. Lefties have hit him harder than righties, and Colorado has five left-handed bats and a switch hitter in the order.

The case against is volume. When Burke loses the zone, his outings end on walks, not hits. On Aug 26 he gave up only two hits in three innings because he walked eight. On Sep 1 he allowed one hit in five and two thirds. Venable has pulled starters early all month, and Chicago is protecting Burke's innings with the postseason starting next week. A short night with a pile of walks is the one way this misses. I'm taking the over because Colorado's order will make him throw strikes, and when he does, this lineup puts the ball in play.

    ADAEL AMADORHITS OVER 0.5
    MLBColorado Rockies· -135

    Adael Amador
    Hits over 0.5

    -135 · LOST · ACTUAL 0

    Colorado Rockies

I'm taking Adael Amador over 0.5 hits at -135. The lineup card drives this one. Amador has hit mostly seventh and eighth since his call-up. Tonight he's second, behind McCarthy and ahead of Hunter Goodman. That spot gets more trips to the plate than the bottom of the order, and a one-hit line gets easier with every extra look.

He's a switch hitter, so against Burke he bats left-handed. That is the side where he's done most of his damage this season, with a .940 OPS and all four of his home runs in 51 plate appearances against righties. On Burke's side, left-handed hitters have handled him better than right-handers all year, with a .710 OPS. Amador has kept hitting as the playing time has grown. He had a hit in each of his last four games, including doubles off Merrill Kelly and Eduardo Rodriguez this week, and he rarely strikes out.

The strongest argument against is how thin this record is. It's 24 games and 73 at-bats. His expected numbers, based on how hard and at what angle he's hit the ball, sit well below his actual line, with a .203 expected average against a .288 actual. Some of those hits were softer than the box score shows. He also has no history against Burke. I'm taking it anyway because moving from eighth to second is a real gain in plate appearances, he's hitting from his better side against Burke's weaker side, and -135 is cheaper than he has been priced for a hit most nights this month.
