Cool marine air settles over Oracle Park as two rebuilding clubs open a late-night divisional series. Colorado arrives with consecutive wins; San Francisco sends out a lineup that looks very different from the one it planned to field.
The price decided this for me. The Giants are laying -135 despite scoring only 2.7 runs per game over their last ten, losing Adames tonight and carrying several cold or inexperienced bats. Freeland’s ugly season numbers are already baked into the line, but his last three starts have been substantially better, and Oracle Park gives him room to attack without every mistake becoming a home run.
Roupp has the better underlying arsenal, but 12 walks across his last 13⅔ innings make him difficult to trust as this large a favorite. Colorado can pressure him with patient left-handed bats, McCarthy’s speed and a lineup showing more life than San Francisco’s. I’ll accept the bullpen risk and take the plus money.
