Cardinals @ Cubs

Gary's Take Friday afternoon at Wrigley, wind coming in from center, with two division rivals opening a series that has been dead even all year. This feels built for a game decided in the late innings. Clay Holmes is making only his second start after an 85-day layoff, and I’m not trusting him to provide length. St. Louis is rested, has won seven of ten, and brings the sharper recent bullpen into a matchup where the wind should suppress Chicago’s biggest advantage against Matthew Liberatore: right-handed power. The Cubs may still win, but asking them to clear two runs is different from asking them to win outright. St. Louis has already taken two of three at Wrigley this season, and its lineup is making enough hard contact to keep this inside one run. I’ll pay the -127 and take the Cardinals plus the run and a half.

Marlins @ Reds

Friday night at Great American Ball Park, warm air hanging over one of baseball’s smallest yards. Cincinnati comes home after an emotional win, while Miami arrives carrying the sting of a 13-1 beating. I’m backing Sandy Alcantara’s ability to quiet that park. He has thrown 20 consecutive scoreless innings, works deeper than Chase Burns, and faces a Cincinnati lineup with several cold bats surrounding its dangerous middle. Burns has been excellent overall, but his command slipped last time out and Cincinnati has generally limited how far he works. The bullpen setup breaks Miami’s way, too. Its important late-inning arms were spared during yesterday’s blowout, while the Reds have covered 13⅓ relief innings over three games and used several leverage pitchers repeatedly. Miami also handles right-handed pitching well enough to make Burns work. At plus money in a matchup I make slightly better than a coin flip for the Marlins, +104 is the bet.

Red Sox @ Pirates

Friday night at PNC Park, two rookie arms under the lights and two clubs arriving off blowout wins. The river is quiet, the wind is light, and this feels like a game decided in the middle innings. Bubba Chandler is the difference for me. His command has tightened, he has allowed five earned runs across his past three starts, and that 98.5 mph fastball can overpower a Boston lineup carrying a .705 OPS against right-handers. Pittsburgh also has its leverage bullpen fully rested after Thursday’s complete game. Jake Bennett’s season numbers command respect, but his form is slipping: a 5.19 ERA with seven walks over his past three starts, while Boston continues to manage his workload. Pittsburgh can stack right-handed bats against him, and I trust the home side to manufacture enough traffic before getting into the softer part of Boston’s bullpen. At plus money, I’m backing Chandler and taking the Pirates to win outright.

White Sox @ Tigers

Friday night at Comerica, first place visiting and the Wild Card chase breathing down Detroit’s neck. This has the feel of a tight divisional game decided after the starters leave. Jackson Jobe’s workload cap keeps me off Tigers -1.5, but his upper-90s arsenal is a difficult assignment for a strikeout-prone, lefty-heavy Chicago lineup. Detroit also owns the steadier late-game pitching, while the White Sox must navigate an entire bullpen game after their relievers covered 12 innings over the last three days. Riley Greene’s absence lowers Detroit’s offensive ceiling, so I’m paying for the win instead of chasing margin. The Tigers are 7-3 over their last ten, have allowed only two runs per game in that stretch, and get Chicago away from its home-field comfort. I’m putting the $100 on Detroit ML at -134.

Royals @ Angels

Friday night in Anaheim, clear skies, a light breeze carrying toward right, and two clubs separated by one game. The Angels bring a three-game winning streak home against a Royals team trying to stop a four-game slide. I’m betting that Grayson Rodriguez’s recent progress matters more than his brutal season line. He has 20 strikeouts over his last three starts, and Kansas City’s order gets thin quickly after Bobby Witt Jr. and the scorching Jac Caglianone—especially with Salvador Perez scratched. On the other side, Mike Trout is driving the ball again, and five left-handed bats get cracks at Seth Lugo, who has been vulnerable to lefties and owns a 5.31 road ERA. Rodriguez’s home history makes this uncomfortable, which is why the price is playable instead of expensive. But if the starters leave this game close, Los Angeles has the bullpen I trust more; Kansas City’s late-inning arms have spent the season turning leads into emergencies. At essentially even money, I’ll put the $100 on the Angels to keep rolling.

Rangers @ Athletics

Clear night in West Sacramento, two clubs carrying three-game skids, and neither side deserves to be priced like a sure thing. I’m taking the Athletics at even money. The matchup that decided it is Oakland’s left-handed traffic against Kumar Rocker. Lefties have produced an .865 OPS against him, and McNeil, Soderstrom, Butler, Cortes and Walton can force him away from his dominant slider and onto the weaker parts of his arsenal. Gage Jump is volatile, especially at home, but his 11-strikeout rebound in Boston gives him the sharper current ceiling against a Texas lineup that has scored four runs in three games. Texas also arrives without rest after deGrom’s two-inning exit forced five innings from the bullpen, while Oakland had Thursday off. The Athletics’ relief corps can absolutely make this uncomfortable, so I’m not paying heavy juice for the run line. But with the rest advantage, the platoon edge and plus money attached, Athletics ML +100 is the bet.

Brewers @ Dodgers

Friday night under the lights at Dodger Stadium, with Milwaukee carrying the glow of a ninth-inning comeback and Los Angeles coming back angry. This feels like an ace’s stage. Yoshinobu Yamamoto is the separator. He held Milwaukee to one run over seven innings earlier this season, and his splitter presents a brutal matchup for a Brewers lineup averaging only 3.9 runs over its last ten. Robert Gasser has been much shakier away from Milwaukee, and the Dodgers can stack right-handed bats against a pitcher allowing an .804 OPS to righties. I’m passing on the expensive -173 moneyline and betting Los Angeles to create separation while Yamamoto controls the game. His length also reduces the exposure to the volatile Dodgers bullpen. The price makes the risk worthwhile: Dodgers -1.5 at +119.

Rockies @ Giants

Cool marine air settles over Oracle Park as two rebuilding clubs open a late-night divisional series. Colorado arrives with consecutive wins; San Francisco sends out a lineup that looks very different from the one it planned to field. The price decided this for me. The Giants are laying -135 despite scoring only 2.7 runs per game over their last ten, losing Adames tonight and carrying several cold or inexperienced bats. Freeland’s ugly season numbers are already baked into the line, but his last three starts have been substantially better, and Oracle Park gives him room to attack without every mistake becoming a home run. Roupp has the better underlying arsenal, but 12 walks across his last 13⅔ innings make him difficult to trust as this large a favorite. Colorado can pressure him with patient left-handed bats, McCarthy’s speed and a lineup showing more life than San Francisco’s. I’ll accept the bullpen risk and take the plus money.

MLB · Cardinals @ Cubs

Clay Holmes

Clay Holmes made his first major league start in nearly three months on August 8 after recovering from a fractured right fibula. In that outing against Kansas City, he was lifted after four innings and 70 pitches after allowing four earned runs on six hits.

UNDER 15.5 Pitcher Outs-152
MLB · Cardinals @ Cubs

JJ Wetherholt

JJ Wetherholt has shown elite plate discipline at the top of the St. Louis order. His recent chase rate sits at an absurdly low 12 percent, making him one of the most patient hitters in the league right now. He has drawn at least one walk in 11 of his last 15 games, including two walks in his last start on Wednesday.

OVER 0.5 Walks+125
MLB · Marlins @ Reds

Chase Burns

Burns has completed six innings in only two of his last six starts, and Cincinnati continues to manage his workload. Miami can help move that clock: Marsee, Edwards, Lopez and Sanoja all make frequent contact, while Burns has issued at least two walks in seven of his last eight starts. Those extended counts should get the bullpen involved before Burns records his 18th out.

UNDER 17.5 Pitcher Outs-104
MLB · Marlins @ Reds

Sandy Alcantara

Alcantara has gone seven innings in four of his last six starts and enters with 20 consecutive scoreless innings. Cincinnati strikes out frequently, several hitters around the dangerous middle of its order are cold, and Alcantara's efficiency gives him a legitimate path through the seventh. I want plus money on baseball's innings leader recording at least 19 outs.

OVER 18.5 Pitcher Outs+112
MLB · Red Sox @ Pirates

Jake Bennett

Bennett has finished with four or fewer strikeouts in five of his past six starts, and his season rate of 55 strikeouts over 76 2/3 innings does not support this number. Pittsburgh has four hitters in tonight's lineup carrying recent whiff rates of 20% or lower, giving Bennett plenty of contact-oriented at-bats.

UNDER 4.5 Strikeouts-132
MLB · Red Sox @ Pirates

Bubba Chandler

I’m buying Chandler’s improved efficiency at a plus-money price. He has recorded at least 16 outs in five of his past eight starts and just completed six scoreless innings on 85 pitches against the Mets. His command has stabilized, and his velocity gives him a direct path through a Boston lineup with a .705 OPS against right-handed pitching.

OVER 15.5 Pitcher Outs+117
MLB · White Sox @ Tigers

Sean Newcomb

I'm betting the role as much as the arm. Newcomb is opening rather than facing Detroit three times, and he brings a 2.66 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and a .581 OPS allowed to right-handed hitters. Detroit has only a .703 OPS against lefties, and Newcomb already worked three hitless innings at Comerica in June. With his exposure likely limited to roughly two innings, I like the price on a clean handoff.

UNDER 0.5 Pitcher Earned Runs-110
MLB · White Sox @ Tigers

Jackson Jobe

I don't need Jobe to repeat the five scoreless innings from his return. I need him to allow no more than one earned run during another controlled workload.

UNDER 1.5 Pitcher Earned Runs+128
MLB HR · Marlins @ Reds

Griffin Conine

Conine's doing that thing where every ball he squares up leaves the yard — 8-for-18 with three home runs, a .444 average and better than a 1.500 OPS over the last week, and an exit velocity sitting near 99 miles an hour on that recent stretch. That's not a hot week riding seeing-eye singles, that's barrel after barrel.

OVER 0.5 Home Runs+500
MLB HR · Red Sox @ Pirates

Wilyer Abreu

Abreu is the hottest power bat on this field — six home runs in his last fifteen games and a slugging line that's carried Boston's lineup through this stretch. The matchup only sharpens it.

OVER 0.5 Home Runs+550
MLB HR · Red Sox @ Pirates

Jarren Duran

The batting average has cooled for Duran over the last week, but the contact quality hasn't — he's still squaring up baseballs as well as anyone in this lineup and he's got three home runs over his last fifteen games to show for it. He walks into the same crack in Bubba Chandler that Abreu does: lefties have gone deep eight times against Chandler this season compared to just twice for right-handers, a split wide enough to build a bet around. Duran already brings pull-side thump, and PNC's tighter dimensions down the right-field line won't hurt him if he connects. Plus-700 for a hitter with this kind of recent power output against a pitcher this vulnerable to left-handed bats is worth taking.

OVER 0.5 Home Runs+700
MLB HR · White Sox @ Tigers

Munetaka Murakami

Murakami's the loudest power indicator on this whole board right now. Over his last two weeks he's barreling balls at a rate nobody else in either lineup is touching, his average exit velocity is well ahead of the field, and he's already got two home runs in his last seven games.

OVER 0.5 Home Runs+261
MLB HR · Marlins @ Reds

Eugenio Suarez

Suarez has gone deep four times in his last week and is barreling the ball at a rate that would lead the league over a full season — five barrels on seventeen balls in play is not a fluke stretch, that's a hitter locked in. Sandy Alcantara is pitching as well as anyone in baseball right now, three straight starts without an earned run, so I'm not pretending this is an easy matchup. But Suarez sees the whole game, not just the six or seven innings Alcantara's good for, and Miami's bullpen has been lit up lately — north of a five ERA over its last week of work. A hitter this hot gets to the homer even against good pitching, and the price on a guy running a near-30 percent barrel rate is generous enough to take.

OVER 0.5 Home Runs+425
MLB HR · Marlins @ Reds

Tyler Stephenson

Stephenson's contact quality the last couple weeks is as good as it's been all season — 94 miles an hour average exit velocity, three barrels in his last thirteen balls in play, and a whiff rate under twenty percent, meaning he's not just hitting the ball hard when he connects, he's connecting more often too. He already went deep last night. Alcantara's the tougher assignment of the two starters in this game, no question, but Stephenson gets a shaky Marlins bullpen behind him for the middle and late innings, and his current form says he's due to keep running into mistakes. I'll take the price.

OVER 0.5 Home Runs+550
MLB HR · White Sox @ Tigers

Colson Montgomery

Twenty-six home runs already this season puts Montgomery among the real power threats in this lineup, and even with his average cooling off he's still barreling the ball at a healthy clip the last couple weeks. Same shell as Murakami here — lefty bat, pull side running away from the wind tonight. Jobe's electric but pitch-count-limited in this comeback start, so Montgomery isn't getting worn down by him deep into the game — a power bat like this just needs the one mistake early before the Tigers turn it over to the pen. His whiff rate's been up, so I'm not pretending this is a pure contact-quality bet, but the raw power profile and the short outing ahead of him are enough to like it at this number.

OVER 0.5 Home Runs+388
MLB HR · White Sox @ Tigers

Gleyber Torres

This one's about opportunity and price. Torres leads off, so he's getting more trips to the plate than anyone else on the field tonight, and he's gone deep in roughly a quarter of his games this stretch — well beyond what a price this long is asking for.

OVER 0.5 Home Runs+850
MLB · Orioles @ Rays

Jonathan Aranda

I only need one contribution from Aranda, and plus money is too generous for a hitter who has recorded a hit, run or RBI in 13 of his last 15 games. He bats second against Chris Bassitt, who is returning from back surgery and has allowed left-handed hitters a .328 average and .945 OPS this season. Aranda's patient approach and favorable lineup position give him several paths to cash.

OVER 0.5 H+R+RBI+135
MLB · Orioles @ Rays

Chandler Simpson

Simpson's profile is built for this market. He is 20-for-45 over his last 15 days, has gone over this number in nine of his last 15 games and owns a 10% recent whiff rate. His contact has produced almost no power, which is exactly what I want when betting singles. Batting third against a right-hander who has struggled badly with lefties gives Simpson enough plate appearances to find two at this price.

OVER 1.5 Singles+250
MLB · Padres @ Guardians

Angel Martinez

I only need one contribution from Cleveland's No. 3 hitter.

OVER 0.5 H+R+RBI+205
MLB · Padres @ Guardians

Gavin Williams

Williams has 29 strikeouts across his last three starts and had reached double figures in five consecutive outings before recording seven last time out. His four-seamer and sweeper both generate elite swing-and-miss rates, and he has been especially sharp at Progressive Field. Eight strikeouts is a demanding number against San Diego, but Williams has the workload and current stuff to clear it, and the plus price makes the bet worthwhile.

OVER 7.5 Strikeouts+118
MLB · Nationals @ Mets

Carson Benge

The left-on-left matchup has inflated this price too far. Andrew Alvarez has allowed lefties to bat .260 with a .725 OPS, while Benge is 18-for-48 over his last 15 games and has recorded a hit in 12 of them. His recent 93.2 mph average exit velocity confirms he is driving the ball, and I only need one hit at nearly 2-to-1.

OVER 0.5 Hits+185
MLB · Nationals @ Mets

Keibert Ruiz

Ruiz gets to turn around and bat left-handed against Robert Stock, who has allowed a .391 average and 1.152 OPS to left-handed hitters through his first two starts. Ruiz has a hit in nine of his last 15 games, is batting .333 during that stretch and owns a recent 9% whiff rate. That contact profile is worth backing at this number.

OVER 0.5 Hits+280
MLB · Mariners @ Astros

George Kirby

Kirby has cleared this number in seven of his last eight starts, and three strikeouts is a low bar for a starter averaging more than five innings. Houston also has enough swing-and-miss in this lineup, particularly around Peña and Trammell, for Kirby to get there without needing his best outing.

OVER 2.5 Strikeouts-115
MLB · Mariners @ Astros

Peter Lambert

Lambert has allowed two earned runs or fewer in eight consecutive starts. His biggest advantage here is a Seattle lineup loaded with left-handed bats: lefties have managed only a .151 average and .505 OPS against him. The Mariners are averaging 2.2 runs over their last 10 games and enter without Taylor Ward and Colt Emerson.

UNDER 2.5 Pitcher Earned Runs-120
MLB · Yankees @ Blue Jays

Heliot Ramos

This price is too generous for a hitter still producing a 93.9 mph average exit velocity despite his ugly results. Shane Bieber has allowed right-handed batters a .333 average and .886 OPS, with a 44.3% hard-hit rate overall. I’ll buy one Ramos hit at nearly four-to-one.

OVER 0.5 Hits+380
MLB · Yankees @ Blue Jays

Gerrit Cole

Toronto’s contact ability keeps this from being automatic, but Cole has cleared this number in six of his last eight starts and recorded 21 strikeouts across his last 18.2 innings. His fastball is averaging 96.9 mph, and he needed only 82 pitches to strike out nine last time out. Six strikeouts at plus money is worth taking.

OVER 5.5 Strikeouts+126
MLB · Diamondbacks @ Braves

Matt Olson

Olson has recorded at least one hit, run or RBI in 11 of his last 15 games, with seven homers during that stretch. His contact has been vicious—97.8 mph average exit velocity and six barrels on 16 balls in play—and Pfaadt has allowed seven of his eight home runs to left-handed hitters. One contribution from Atlanta's No. 3 hitter is worth attacking at this price.

OVER 0.5 H+R+RBI+300
MLB · Diamondbacks @ Braves

Brandon Pfaadt

Pfaadt has topped this number only twice in his last eight starts and has nine strikeouts across 20.2 innings in his last three. Atlanta also surrounds its higher-whiff bats with several disciplined contact hitters. I like Pfaadt's run-prevention form, but his recent approach has been about generating manageable contact, not piling up strikeouts.

UNDER 3.5 Strikeouts-113
MLB · Royals @ Angels

Jac Caglianone

I’m backing the hottest and most dangerous hitter in Kansas City’s lineup against Grayson Rodriguez’s weakest split. Caglianone has cleared this number in nine of his last 15 games while batting .385 with five homers, and his recent contact carries a 96.5 mph average exit velocity. Rodriguez has allowed a .953 OPS to left-handed hitters with nearly half of his balls in play classified as hard hit. With the breeze moving toward right field, one loud swing can cash this at plus money.

OVER 1.5 Total Bases+105
MLB · Royals @ Angels

Grayson Rodriguez

Rodriguez has recorded 16 outs in only four of his 12 starts this season, and he has completed five innings just twice across his last six. Kansas City can send seven left-handed or switch hitters at him, which matters against a pitcher allowing a .325 average and .953 OPS to lefties. His 1.62 WHIP and inconsistent command create the pitch-count pressure I want here. He does not need to get shelled—five complete innings still cashes the under.

UNDER 15.5 Pitcher Outs-109
MLB · Rangers @ Athletics

Kumar Rocker

Rocker has reached five strikeouts in five straight starts, including five in only three innings last time out. His slider owns a 44.5% whiff rate, and Oakland has several swing-and-miss bats in the heart and bottom of the order. He does not need to pitch well or work deep to clear a number this low. Getting plus money on five strikeouts is the value.

OVER 4.5 Strikeouts+128
MLB · Rangers @ Athletics

Tyler Soderstrom

Soderstrom gets the matchup I want against Rocker, who has allowed an .865 OPS and 10 home runs to left-handed hitters. He has cleared this number in nine of his last 15 games and is driving the ball again, with two homers and a 95.3 mph average exit velocity over the past week. Batting third in this park gives him multiple paths to two bases.

OVER 1.5 Total Bases+112
MLB · Brewers @ Dodgers

Yoshinobu Yamamoto

Yamamoto held Milwaukee to one run over seven innings in their first meeting, and his 0.89 WHIP reflects how rarely opponents string hits together. Both sides of the plate are batting below .200 against him, while his splitter and cutter are especially difficult to square up. Milwaukee is averaging only 3.9 runs over its last ten, so I’m betting the Brewers finish with four or fewer hits against Yamamoto.

UNDER 4.5 Pitcher Hits Allowed-107
MLB · Brewers @ Dodgers

Mookie Betts

Betts is seeing the ball extremely well, batting .318 with two home runs and a 1.082 OPS over his last seven games while posting an 11% whiff rate. Robert Gasser has allowed an .804 OPS to right-handed hitters and owns a 5.87 road ERA. Batting fourth gives Betts multiple opportunities to attack Gasser, and this can cash with one extra-base hit or a two-hit night. I’ll take the plus money.

OVER 1.5 Total Bases+148
MLB · Rockies @ Giants

Landen Roupp

Roupp has issued 12 walks over his last 13⅔ innings and exceeded this line in six of his last eight starts. Colorado will send seven hitters to the plate from the left side, giving a pitcher with shaky command plenty of chances to fall behind and work deep counts. I’m willing to lay the price with only two walks needed.

OVER 1.5 Pitcher Walks-156
MLB · Rockies @ Giants

Willi Castro

Castro has cleared this number in 11 of his last 15 games while batting .316 with a .986 OPS over that stretch. He is hitting third behind two capable table-setters, and Roupp’s recent control trouble raises the likelihood of traffic ahead of him. Castro can cash this with a hit and either a run or an RBI, so I like getting plus money.
