The read
Washington asks me to lay -138 behind Jake Irvin at a venue where he owns a 7.86 ERA. Irvin has allowed 13 earned runs in his last 15.1 innings, with a 45% hard-hit rate and an 11.7% barrel rate for the season. Colorado’s recent contact has also been stronger: a .407 xwOBA and 41.8% hard-hit rate over the last three games, compared with Washington’s .352 and 30.4%.
Gabriel Hughes is the obvious risk. He has a 9.47 road ERA and has surrendered 17 earned runs over his last 13.0 innings. But his contact marks—30.1% hard-hit and 4.5% barrels—are considerably better than Irvin’s, and he limited Washington to one earned run over five innings in their only previous meeting. That one start is supporting evidence, not the foundation of the bet.
The separation comes after the starters. Washington’s bullpen has a 7.78 ERA over the last five days and has allowed 14 earned runs in 14.1 innings this series. Colorado’s pen is at 4.19 over the same five-day window and has allowed six earned runs in 9.1 series innings. Washington also had Will Dion throw 56 pitches and Luis Perales throw 53 Wednesday. With two vulnerable starters, I want the plus price attached to the club with the stronger recent contact and the better-positioned bullpen.

I’m playing the workload as much as the matchup. Hughes has topped 15 outs in only three of his eight starts and just once in his last five. Five complete innings still cashes this under.
His 17 earned runs over the last 13 innings and 9.47 road ERA create plenty of risk for an early hook. Colorado’s primary leverage arms also avoided Wednesday’s blowout, so there is little reason to stretch Hughes if he encounters one difficult inning.

Irvin has allowed at least four earned runs in four of his five starts since returning to the rotation. He carries a 7.86 ERA at Nationals Park, while his 45% hard-hit rate and 11.7% barrel rate say the damage has been earned.
His four-seamer and sinker account for nearly half his pitches, and those offerings have allowed .473 and .491 xwOBA marks. Hunter Goodman sitting removes a major bat, but Colorado still owns a .758 OPS against right-handed pitching. Three earned runs is a reachable number.
