Marlins picks

Game 2 of a three-game set at loanDepot park, roof closed, first pitch in the Miami afternoon — and the Marlins walk in off a 3-0 shutout of the Braves with a chance to take the series. What this game actually is: a bullpen game on both sides. Brent Suter has three 2026 "starts" and none lasted past 2.0 innings; Miami's Jack Ralston has zero 2026 starts at all. Neither manager is buying length, so roughly twelve to fifteen of the eighteen regulation innings land in the two pens. That's where I find my edge, and it's one-sided. Eury Pérez threw a complete game Friday, meaning not one Marlins reliever threw on Sep 25 — the whole late-game hierarchy is 2-3 days rested behind Ralston. Atlanta spent that same game the other way: Ray Kerr 32 pitches, Grant Holmes 54 across four innings, Didier Fuentes 26. Holmes is effectively off the board tonight. In a game guaranteed to be decided by relief innings, I want the fresh pen — and it belongs to the home team. The rest of the shape supports the price. Miami is 46-33 at home this season against 33-48 on the road, and it just beat this exact Atlanta club last night. The starters aren't a mismatch against Miami either: Suter's 2026 platoon runs the wrong way for a lefty — he's been softer to right-handers (.663 OPS allowed) than lefties (.789) — so Miami's seven-righty lineup doesn't hand him the advantage the raw handedness math suggests. At +100, I only need a hair better than a coin flip, and a rested pen plus home field gets me there. The honest case against: Atlanta is the better roster, fields it better, and Suter suppresses contact harder (6.1% barrel, 30.7% hard-hit allowed) than Ralston does (11.6% barrel, 39.5% hard-hit, four homers in 16.0 innings). Ralston has never started a big-league game, and with Xavier Edwards out today (thumb), Miami downgrades to a .174 bat at second base. I've weighed all of it. My read still lands on Miami because the structural gap — a fully rested bullpen versus a taxed one — falls exactly on the innings this game will be decided in, and the price isn't charging me anything for it.
