The read
This is a plus-money bet on the starter I trust more tonight. Sandy Alcantara has a 1.80 ERA over his last three starts; Ranger Suarez is at 5.40. Alcantara has completed at least six innings in each of his last six outings, while Suarez has not completed six in any of his last six. That difference in length gives Miami a chance to control most of this game with its best arm.
Boston’s bullpen is the danger. It owns a 1.57 ERA over the last seven games compared with Miami’s 4.18, so the Marlins do not want this decided through a long relief battle. Alcantara is precisely why I am willing to accept that risk: his recent workload gives Miami a credible route to needing only a few late outs.
The venue completes the case. Miami is 41-25 at home, while Boston is 37-27 on the road. Alcantara has a 1.29 ERA across his last three home starts; Suarez has a 5.11 ERA across his last three road starts. At +112, I do not need Miami to be the better club across an entire season. I need its starting-pitching and home-field advantages to carry this particular matchup often enough. My read says they do, so I am backing the Marlins outright.

Suarez has not completed six innings in any of his five starts since returning from his three-week layoff, recording 12, 14, 9, 15 and 16 outs. He needed 93 pitches to get through 5 1/3 innings last time, and Boston has little reason to extend him with its bullpen carrying a 2.89 ERA and a manageable recent workload. I expect another early handoff before Suarez records an 18th out.

Alcantara has allowed only four earned runs across his last five starts, completing at least six innings every time. His slider has produced a .122 xwOBA, his sinker sits at .247, and he owns a 2.69 home ERA with a 1.29 mark across his last three starts in Miami. Boston is dangerous, but it has a .718 OPS against right-handed pitching. Making the Red Sox score three earned runs against this version of Alcantara is a fair requirement at -130.
