The read
Monday night at Chase Field puts Miami and Arizona in a matchup where the innings after the starters leave could decide the bet. I’m backing the Diamondbacks at -134 because Miami’s recent starting-pitching struggles and Arizona’s stronger relief performances carry the most weight for me. Miami’s starter has a 5.83 ERA over his last five starts, with 13 strikeouts and nine walks. His season ERA of 3.78 deserves consideration, but that recent combination of runs allowed and limited strikeouts makes me cautious about expecting him to control this particular game.
Arizona’s relief options include pitchers with ERAs of 2.03 and 2.31, while Miami’s principal save options sit at 6.10 and 5.50. Those individual performances give Arizona the more convincing late-inning case. Miami also had a reliever throw 37 pitches Sunday and a bulk arm throw 68 pitches Saturday, creating additional workload concerns if its starter exits early. Arizona played twice Sunday, so I cannot treat its whole bullpen as rested. Even with that qualification, I prefer Arizona’s relief options to protect a lead or keep a tied game within reach.
The strongest argument against this pick is Arizona’s own starting-pitching uncertainty: its returning starter has completed just 3.0 innings this season. Another short outing could stretch the bullpen and diminish that advantage. Miami also brings a .728 season OPS against Arizona’s .710, and its consecutive wins contrast with Arizona’s two Sunday losses. That is a credible opposing case, especially if Miami forces an early pitching change. I still take Arizona because the combination of Miami’s starter’s recent struggles and its less convincing relief options outweighs that risk in my judgment. At -134, the price is reasonable for that edge, but the uncertainty surrounding Arizona’s starting workload keeps my confidence measured.

Props on this game
3- GARY'S PICKSANDY ALCANTARAPITCHER OUTS OVER 17.5
Sandy Alcantara doesn't miss innings targets often, and I don't see this Arizona lineup being the exception. He's averaging better than six innings a start across the full season — 19.4 outs a night — and he's cleared this number in seven of his last eight outings. The one miss came against the Mets, who jumped him for seven runs on 99 pitches; that's an ugly one-off, not a pattern. Everywhere else on that stretch he sat at 18 or 21 outs like clockwork.
He's had his normal rest going into this one, and he's walking into a lineup that's cooling in the spots that matter. Perdomo is scuffling over the last two weeks, Carroll has gone ice cold, Lawlar has been quiet, and Arizona as a team hits right-handed pitching nearly 100 points of OPS worse than it hits lefties. Alcantara is exactly the look that gives them trouble: a power right-hander leaning on a mid-90s sinker and a changeup that's missed bats all year. With the roof closed tonight, Chase Field loses some of the carry that usually turns close games into track meets, which cuts down on any reason to pull him early just because a ball leaves the yard.
The disaster start against the Mets is the one thing keeping me from going higher here, and his last three road starts haven't been pretty on the runs-allowed side. But outs are about survivability more than results, and Alcantara has shown all year he can bend without an early hook. I'll take the over.
- GARY'S PICKXAVIER EDWARDSSINGLES OVER 0.5
Xavier Edwards is a contact hitter first, and that's the profile I want on the board against a pitcher who's still finding his feet. He's hitting .282 with a .362 on-base mark over a full season, he's put a single on the board in twelve of his last fifteen games, and he's actually hit right-handers better than lefties this year. Corbin Burnes throws right-handed.
Burnes is only in his second start back from a long layoff following elbow surgery, and while his first outing was clean on the scoreboard, it came in a heavily managed three-inning look with his pitch count kept in the 60s. That's not a pitcher who has sharpened his command against a lineup that puts the ball in play the way Edwards does, and if Arizona leans on its bullpen behind him, Edwards gets more looks against arms he can slap a ball past. He picked up a base hit and a walk in his first game back off the injured list Sunday, and a high-contact, high-on-base bat with plus speed is built for this kind of number.
The one thing giving me pause is recency — he's got only one game under his belt since returning, so I'm working with a thinner current sample than I'd like. But the season-long track record and tonight's matchup point the same direction, and I like Edwards to come away with a clean knock.
- THE LONG SHOTGRIFFIN CONINEHR OVER 0.5
When I'm picking a long shot off this kind of board, I want the bat that's actually swinging it well right now, and that's Griffin Conine. He's carrying an .840 OPS for the season, he's hit .318 with an .876 mark over his last fifteen games, and against right-handed pitching specifically he's been outstanding — a .921 OPS with real power mixed in. Corbin Burnes throws right-handed, and Conine gets the first look at him tonight.
Burnes is only in his second start back from a long layoff, still on a managed pitch count and without much of a track record yet against a deep lineup. Conine already has fifteen home runs in a limited number of at-bats this season, so the raw power is there even though it hasn't shown up in his last several games specifically. Chase Field with the roof open is one of the friendlier hitting parks around; it's closed tonight, so I'm not leaning on the ballpark for lift here — this is a bat-quality and matchup case on its own.
This is a swing-for-the-fences ticket by nature, and most nights it doesn't cash. But if one Marlins bat runs into a mistake early against a rusty arm, the way Conine has been squaring up the ball the last two weeks says it's him.
