The read
Storm clouds hang over Great American Ball Park, with warm air and a breeze carrying toward left field. It’s a volatile setting for a rubber match, but the best arm on the field belongs to Miami.
Eury Pérez is the separator. His five-pitch arsenal gives Cincinnati’s struggling lineup too many different problems, and he has allowed only five earned runs across his past three starts. Nick Lodolo is making just his second start after a month away, permitted three homers in his return, and could again face an abbreviated workload.
Miami’s lineup is diminished, so I’m not paying extra for the run line. I want the straight win at -118, especially with the Marlins’ contact and speed positioned to pressure Lodolo before reaching a Cincinnati bullpen carrying a 7.04 ERA over its past seven games. The rain and Miami’s poor road record keep this from being a heavier play, but Pérez at this price is the wager.

Lodolo has completed six innings only twice in his past eight starts, and he was limited to four innings and 70 pitches in his first outing after a month-long absence. Miami sends eight right-handed or switch hitters at him, a concern given the .834 OPS he has allowed to righties. With possible rain adding another obstacle, I’m betting he exits before recording his 16th out.

Pérez has allowed two earned runs or fewer in nine of his past 11 starts, including just five across his last 18 innings. His fastball velocity and three distinct swing-and-miss secondaries are a difficult combination for a Cincinnati lineup averaging 3.4 runs over its past 10 games. Great American Ball Park and the breeze create some danger, but the Reds have a .690 OPS against right-handed pitching and several cold bats near the top of the order. I trust Pérez to hold them below three earned runs.
