Mariners picks

Two sub-.500 clubs, a pitcher-friendly ballpark, and a wind blowing in from left — tonight's Seattle finale sets up as a low-scoring, one-swing game, and the price has the wrong team laying the number. Start with the mound. Ryan Johnson is the hotter arm — a 2.03 ERA over his last 8 starts with 0 walks in three of his last five — and he already carved up this exact Seattle lineup on Sep 15 (6 IP, 1 ER, 6 H, 0 BB, 7 K). Kade Anderson's meaningful platoon sample does dominate righties (.653 OPS allowed over 93 AB), and the Angels run out a near-all-right-handed card. But his gaudy .903 OPS allowed vs lefties sits on just 28 AB — noise, not a real weakness — and the two best Angels righties, Trout and Neto, actually hit left-handed pitching better than righties (.839 and .872 OPS vs LHP). The "all-righties walk into Anderson's strength" read is softer than it looks. Now the fresh news the market has barely had time to digest. Julio Rodríguez — Seattle's best hitter and its strongest bat against Angels pitching — is not on tonight's confirmed card despite playing both games of this series, a same-day omission that strips the heart of an order already scuffling (3.4 R/G over its last five). And Seattle lost All-Star closer Andrés Muñoz to the IL on Sep 25, one day before this game, leaving the ninth unsettled. Meanwhile the Angels' 4-of-5 recent edge in this matchup is real, and the club is playing with a stated purpose — avoiding the first 100-loss season in franchise history. The strongest case against me is Seattle's bullpen: a 4.14 tracked relief ERA against the Angels' 5.87, and the fresher unit even with Muñoz gone. That is a genuine lever in a game both starters exit around the sixth. But the Angels have hung close with this team all series, Johnson gives them a path to a lead, and at +138 — against a 74-86 home team that has now dropped two straight to a 98-loss club — the dog is where the value sits.
