The read

The Astros and Mariners meet for the last time this season on a cool night at T-Mobile Park. Houston is tied for the AL West lead and sends rookie Ethan Pecko to the mound. Seattle is one loss from elimination and answers with George Kirby. What decides it for me is how long each starter lasts. Kirby has a 6.21 ERA over his last seven starts, but that damage came on the road. His three home starts in that stretch cost 5 earned runs in 19.1 innings, and his season home ERA is 3.27. As a starter, Pecko has a 5.19 ERA with 10 walks in 17.1 innings, and he has never recorded more than 15 outs in a start. His 3.77 ERA against a 4.82 xERA is a fragile number, and the market is paying for it as the line has drifted toward Houston.

That gap in length decides the middle innings. If Pecko lasts his usual four or five innings, Houston likely needs 12 to 15 relief outs before Bryan Abreu and Josh Hader. Three of the arms who covered for Houston last night threw real pitch counts: Bennett Sousa threw 40, Miguel Ullola 33 and Logan VanWey 25. Among the arms with rest, Bryan King has an 11.81 ERA over his last 30 days. Houston's lineup is also thin. Jeremy Peña was held out after being hit on the wrist, so Nick Allen and his .272 xSLG play shortstop, and Lucas Spence, hitting .162, plays center. Seattle needs Kirby to reach a bullpen that has had days off, including Seranthony Domínguez, who has a 0.83 WHIP over his last 30 days.

The best argument against Seattle is real. Yordan Alvarez, with a 1.113 OPS against righties and 41 homers, gets several looks at Kirby. Houston's middle of the order is hot. If the Astros lead late, Abreu and Hader have rest, and Hader is 26-for-26 in saves with a 0.83 ERA. Seattle has been shut out 15 times, including last night, and closer Andrés Muñoz is day-to-day. I'm taking Seattle anyway. For Houston to win, its weakest relievers and a lineup missing its shortstop and both usual center fielders have to beat a pitcher at his best park. At -130, I'll pay for that.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

  • Mariners are 9-3 vs Astros this season

    9-3

Nine wins in twelve meetings is a real season sample, not a fluke born of a couple of games, so Seattle's edge here carries weight. The most recent matchup went the other way though, a 7-0 shutout for Houston. There's nothing here tying the trend to a specific starter or park, so it reads as a genuine season-long edge that one big pitching performance can interrupt on any given night.

STREAK

  • HOU games have gone UNDER 9 straight

    U9

The under has cashed 9 straight in Houston games, with 7.9 combined runs a game against lines averaging 9.2. Tonight's number sits at 7.5, so the market has already pulled it down. Nine straight unders is a long run, and the price now reflects it.

TEAM RECORD

  • Mariners 2-6 in George Kirby's last 8 starts

    2-6

Two wins in George Kirby's last eight starts is a rough stretch for a pitcher usually seen as one of Seattle's better arms. A record like that often points to inconsistent offense or bullpen support around him rather than a drop in his own performance. Eight starts is still a small sample within the season. Hosting Houston tonight, separate how Kirby has actually pitched from how often Seattle has actually won those games.

GEORGE KIRBYPITCHER HITS ALLOWED OVER 4.5
    MLBSeattle Mariners· -130

    George Kirby
    Pitcher Hits Allowed over 4.5

    -130 · CASHED · ACTUAL 6

    Seattle Mariners

I'm taking George Kirby over 4.5 hits allowed at -130. Kirby has allowed five or more hits in seven of his last eight starts. Over 29 starts this season he averages 6.6 hits allowed. Left-handed hitters are batting .284 against him and right-handed hitters .288, so he gives up contact to both sides. The Astros in tonight's lineup also know him well. The eight with career at-bats against him are a combined 34-for-126 (.270), led by Isaac Paredes at 8-for-19 and Jose Altuve at 6-for-27. The top four in Houston's order are hot. Over the past week Altuve is 10-for-25, Yordan Alvarez 9-for-22, Paredes 7-for-20 and Yainer Diaz 8-for-22. His outs line is 17.5 with the over at -178, so the market expects about six innings. That should give the top of the order three trips each.

The case against is his home park. Kirby has a 3.27 ERA in 15 home starts. Three of his last eight starts were at home, and he allowed 7, 6 and 4 hits in them, so one of the three stayed under this line. The bottom of Houston's order is weak tonight. Lucas Spence is hitting .162 in 37 at-bats, Cam Smith is 1-for-18 over the past week, and Nick Allen starts at shortstop with Jeremy Peña out. An early exit is also possible: he recorded fewer than 15 outs in three of his last eight starts. I still want five hits against a pitcher who has allowed at least that many in almost every recent start, and at -130 I'll pay it.

  • GARY'S PICK
    LAZARO MONTESH+R+RBI OVER 0.5
    MLBSeattle Mariners· -139

    Lazaro Montes
    H+R+RBI over 0.5

    -139 · CASHED · ACTUAL 1

    Seattle Mariners

I'm taking Lazaro Montes over 0.5 hits plus runs plus RBIs at -139. Montes is a left-handed rookie with 42 major league at-bats, and he bats eighth tonight. His results so far split by the pitcher's hand. Against right-handers he is 8-for-30 with a 1.053 OPS, and all four of his home runs came against them. Against lefties he is 0-for-12. Tonight he starts against right-hander Ethan Pecko, whose split runs the same way. Left-handed hitters have a .791 OPS and all five of his home runs allowed in 63 at-bats, while right-handed hitters have a .487 OPS. This prop pays on a hit, a run or an RBI. One swing like the ones he has already hit against right-handers covers it. So does a single followed by a hit from the top of Seattle's order.

The evidence against him is heavy, and I'm pricing it in. He has cleared this line in only 6 of his last 15 games. He has 21 strikeouts in 42 at-bats, and he is 1-for-14 over the last week with six strikeouts in his last three games. Hitting eighth, he averages 2.7 plate appearances a game. Pecko is unlikely to pitch deep, so Houston's rested lefties, Josh Hader and Bryan King, could face him late. Seattle also has right-handed bench bats in Victor Robles and Taylor Ward if a lefty comes in. My conviction here is smaller, but he opens the game in the one matchup where he has produced.
