The read

Sunday afternoon in Seattle, the Rays are going for the sweep while the Mariners are trying to end a three-game losing streak. Tampa Bay has won five in a row, and Seattle has scored only three runs in the first two games of this series.

I’m backing the Rays because Ian Seymour has pitched better than his usual results make it look, and his changeup can get hitters to swing and miss. Emerson Hancock’s results look better, but he has allowed enough hard contact to give Tampa Bay’s left-handed hitters a chance to hurt him.

The late innings are the difference for me. Tampa Bay’s relief pitching has been much better than Seattle’s, even though several important Rays relievers have worked recently. With the odds basically even, I’ll take the deeper, hotter team with more ways to close out the game. I’m taking the Rays to win.

The full analysis

Sunday afternoon in Seattle, with the Rays going for the sweep and the Mariners trying to stop a three-game slide. Tampa Bay has won five straight, while Seattle’s offense has managed just three runs through the first two games of this series.

I’m backing the Rays because the pitching indicators favor Ian Seymour more than the surface numbers suggest. His 3.47 xERA is considerably better than his 4.27 ERA, and his changeup gives him a legitimate swing-and-miss weapon. Emerson Hancock owns the prettier ERA, but his 4.09 xERA and elevated hard-hit rate leave room for Tampa Bay’s left-handed lineup to do damage.

The late innings are the separator. Tampa Bay’s bullpen has been substantially better than Seattle’s, even with several key Rays relievers carrying recent workloads. At essentially an even price, I’ll take the deeper team, the hotter club and the side with more ways to finish the game. Rays moneyline at -104.
