The read

Friday night at Rogers Centre brings together two offenses averaging 3.9 runs per game. With little separation between the lineups, I’m backing Toronto’s stronger pitching profile without requiring a two-run victory.

Dylan Cease owns a 2.37 ERA and 1.06 WHIP with 209 strikeouts in 144.1 innings. His contact numbers—4.6% barrels and 32.3% hard contact allowed—are considerably stronger than Emerson Hancock’s 8.2% and 41.6%. Cease’s strikeout production also matches up well with a Seattle offense averaging 8.65 strikeouts per game.

Toronto holds the better season-long bullpen profile among its current arms: a 3.22 ERA and 1.23 WHIP, compared with Seattle’s 3.94 ERA and 1.28 WHIP. Toronto’s primary late-inning relievers also did not pitch in Thursday’s loss.

Seattle has enough resistance to keep me away from Toronto -1.5. Hancock has a 3.37 ERA, a 1.12 WHIP and only three walks across his last three starts, while Cease has issued 12 during the same span. The Mariners also had Thursday off. Those factors make the moneyline the right ticket, but Cease’s run prevention, contact suppression and bullpen support give Toronto the better full-game case.
