Diamondbacks picks

It's a cool, cross-wind night at Petco Park, and Game 2 of this NL West set frames a clean split: one club hands the ball to a real starter, the other hands it to a committee and asks the math to hold for nine innings. San Diego owns the more reliable pitching structure. Walker Buehler is a 31-start workhorse — 150 innings, and a 4.56 ERA that actually trails his 4.20 xERA, meaning the surface number is more unlucky than fragile — and he's on five days' rest off a 6.2-inning outing, a fair six-inning expectation. That hands the game to the best relief core in baseball at full strength: Mason Miller (1.30 ERA, 0.84 WHIP), Yuki Matsui (1.84) and Adrian Morejon (2.86) all last pitched Sept. 24. In a game the market totals at just 7.5, the 7th through 9th innings belong to the home side. Arizona's case is real and I weighed it hard. The D-backs have won six straight, own the season series 6-5 with a 63-51 run margin, are playing for their lives while San Diego already clinched, and Buehler does carry a genuine lefty problem (.781 OPS allowed to left-handers over 324 AB). But momentum is the least bankable input in baseball, and the near-even price already bakes in this surge. And the "lefty ambush" is softer than it reads: Corbin Carroll is a reverse-split bat who hits just .206/.727 against right-handers, so the D-backs' most dangerous lefty is on his weak side tonight — even as Corbin Burnes' IL stint forces a bullpen game (Garcia 1.97, Morillo 2.13, Loáisiga 2.22, Martinez 0.00) that has real arms but no length. Home field (49-30) plus Petco's 0.92 park factor cut into Arizona's power, and the most durable late-game edge sits with San Diego's rested, elite pen. That's the edge I trust at a fair -120 — moneyline, not the run line, because a 7.5-total game in a pitcher's park rarely produces the 2-run margin.
