The read
Arizona’s recent bullpen success is the part of this price I’m challenging. Law opens today after Garcia, Morillo, Ginkel and Loáisiga all pitched Saturday and Sunday. Loáisiga threw 36 pitches across those games, Morillo 32 and Ginkel 26. Arizona now needs to cover an opener game while deciding how much more to ask of the pitchers who protected those wins. I think that makes Kansas City worth the small favorite’s price.
The Royals have a more favorable route through their pitching staff today. Pearson and Cruz last pitched September 3, while Kimbrel sat Sunday after working Saturday. Cameron’s last three starts produced a 3.38 ERA, and his season matchup against right-handed hitters matters here: a .659 OPS allowed over 442 at-bats. Arizona’s confirmed lineup consists of right-handed and switch hitters. Loading that lineup against a lefty does not automatically create an advantage against this particular pitcher.
Kansas City also gets Jensen back after Sunday’s day off. His .793 OPS against right-handers and Pasquantino’s .767 give the Royals credible bats near the top against Law. Across the field, Carroll starts on the bench despite a .942 OPS against left-handers. That helps Cameron’s initial assignment, although Carroll remains a potential option later.
There are meaningful objections. Caglianone’s fresh elbow injury removes an .864 OPS bat against right-handed pitching from Kansas City’s lineup. Marte and Moreno give Arizona legitimate threats against Cameron. And Arizona’s late relievers have not been ruled unavailable: Garcia threw only three pitches Sunday, so I am allowing for him to contribute.
My assumption is that Cameron provides enough innings for Kansas City to reach its less recently used relief options, while Arizona’s consecutive-day usage limits some of its preferred choices. The workload is established; its effect on today’s deployment is my judgment. That supports a modest Royals edge.
The unresolved detail most capable of changing this bet is Arizona’s pitching plan behind Law. A substantial bulk assignment for Cabrera, together with normal availability for the late-inning group, would weaken the central reason I’m paying this price.
