The read
Arizona’s route from Kelly to its late-inning relievers is what makes this price attractive. Garcia, Loáisiga and Morillo last threw 14, 15 and 15 pitches, respectively, before Thursday’s off-day. That gives Arizona a reasonable path to using its preferred options when the game is still competitive.
Kelly supplied seven scoreless innings in his latest start. Javier’s last two conventional starts lasted four innings each, and his subsequent relief appearance required 78 pitches for 4⅓ innings. The recent reporting also identifies trouble when hitters see Javier again. I expect Houston to need meaningful outs from its middle relief earlier. Blubaugh has worked consecutive days, which complicates that handoff without establishing that he is unavailable.
Moreno gives Arizona a specific offensive opportunity: an .854 OPS against right-handed pitching and a .541 slugging percentage against four-seamers. Javier throws his four-seamer 51.0% of the time. That matchup matters more to me than assuming Arizona’s whole lineup suddenly breaks out. Its offense scored once in each game against Philadelphia, while Houston’s confirmed nine have hit .191 over the last seven days. Neither recent stretch settles what happens tonight.
The strongest argument against this ticket is Kelly’s control. He walked four in the scoreless outing and has walked 11 over his last three starts. Alvarez’s 1.111 OPS against righties makes those free runners dangerous. Houston also has a credible finish: Hader rested yesterday, and Abreu needed only nine pitches. An early Houston lead could let those relievers decide the game before Arizona’s bullpen advantage matters.
The supplied facts carrying my decision are the recent outing lengths, the individual relief workloads and Moreno’s matchup with Javier’s primary pitch. My assumption is that Kelly provides the more useful start despite his walks, and Arizona generates enough offense to make its relief options count. I judge that combination sufficient for +110; Kelly’s last result alone would not persuade me.
The unresolved fact most capable of changing the bet is Arizona’s actual late-inning availability. A confirmed restriction on Garcia, Loáisiga or Morillo would make me reconsider the price, because their expected availability is central to this decision.

COOLING OFF
Nolan Arenado: .409 OPS in L15 — draws RHP Cristian Javier
.409Nolan Arenado’s .409 OPS over the last 15 days points to a hitter still searching for timing. Cristian Javier also faces him from Arenado’s weaker side, offering little reason to expect an easy reset.
BULLPEN
Arizona Diamondbacks pen: 14.3 relief IP over their last 3 games
14.3 IPArizona’s bullpen has thrown 14.3 innings in three games, with Law likely down and Morillo potentially limited. Houston can create favorable middle-inning matchups if it gets Merrill Kelly out before the Diamondbacks can arrange their preferred relief order.
FIRST INNING
ARI have gone quiet in the 1st: runs in 1 of their last 10
1/10Arizona has scored in the first only once in its last 10, and Javier is well positioned to extend that slump. Houston has the more credible route to an early run against Kelly.
TEAM RECORD
Astros 1-7 in Cristian Javier's last 8 starts
1-7Houston has lost seven of Cristian Javier’s last eight starts, and the repetition makes the trend difficult to ignore. Javier may be due for somewhat better personal results, but backing the Astros requires trusting the entire pattern to reverse.
REGRESSION
Merrill Kelly: 5.08 ERA vs 6.94 xERA
6.94Merrill Kelly’s 5.08 ERA already looks rough, and the 6.94 xERA says it could be worse. With traffic, limited strikeouts and too much dangerous contact, Houston is positioned to turn his remaining good fortune into runs.
Cristian Javier: 6.45 ERA vs 5.16 xERA
5.16Cristian Javier’s 6.45 ERA is worse than his 5.16 xERA, so some positive correction is available. I still cannot treat him as fixed against Arizona when the expected mark and WHIP remain this elevated.
FANTASY PICKUPS
Isaac Paredes
.779 OPSParedes owns a .779 OPS, bats third and gets struggling Merrill Kelly, whose xERA sits at 6.94. The lineup spot makes him one of my preferred Houston streams tonight. Stream at third base or in a corner-infield spot.
Christian Walker
.728 OPSWalker gets the same favorable matchup with struggling Merrill Kelly, but his .728 OPS, .228 average and sixth-place lineup spot lower the ceiling. Stream if you need a first baseman, especially in deeper formats.
Jose Altuve
.706 OPSAltuve bats cleanup against struggling Merrill Kelly and his 6.94 xERA. The .706 OPS and .244 average are modest, but the lineup position keeps the opportunity attractive. Stream for managers needing a second baseman tonight.
Jeremy Pena
.801 OPSPena is my favorite hitter of this group: a .801 OPS, .278 average and the leadoff spot against struggling Merrill Kelly and his 6.94 xERA. Stream confidently at shortstop or middle infield.
CUT LIST
Merrill Kelly
6.94 xERAThe 5.08 ERA is already hurting you, and the 6.94 xERA says the underlying performance has been even worse. A start tonight isn’t enough reason to keep carrying that risk. Cut

3- GARY'S PICKCRISTIAN JAVIERPITCHER HITS ALLOWED OVER 3.5
This number is too low for Javier’s current profile. He has allowed at least four hits in every listed start but one, owns a 1.63 WHIP, and opponents are hitting at least .289 from both sides. His sweeper can miss bats, but the four-seamer accounts for more than half his pitches and has been hit at a .329 clip. Arizona is rested, and four hits should be within reach even if Javier receives another early hook.
- GARY'S PICKMERRILL KELLYK'S UNDER 4.5
Kelly has averaged only 3.8 strikeouts per start and stayed below five in five of his last eight. His four-seamer and cutter generate whiffs around 12%, so much of his success depends on contact rather than overpowering hitters. Houston’s first six include several bats capable of extending plate appearances, and Kelly has issued at least three walks in six straight starts. That combination can raise his pitch count without raising his strikeout total.
- THE LONG SHOTJEREMY PENAHR OVER 0.5
Peña is my long-shot swing. He has 17 homers in 90 games, four in his last 15, and gets the maximum plate-appearance opportunity from the leadoff spot. Kelly has surrendered 26 home runs in 25 starts, with a .429 xwOBA against his four-seamer and a .404 mark against his cutter. Both pitches enter Peña’s right-handed lift zone, and the short left-field porch gives him an inviting target at a worthwhile price.
