The read

Friday night at Chase Field, the roof is closed and two left-handers take the ball as Cincinnati opens a long road trip against an Arizona club fighting to stay in the wild-card race. My money is on the Diamondbacks to win the game outright.

Eduardo Rodriguez is the foundation of the bet. He brings a 2.71 ERA and 1.21 WHIP into a matchup with Nick Lodolo, who sits at 4.52 and 1.42. Both lineups start six right-handed hitters and two switch-hitters, making the pitchers’ work against righties especially relevant: Rodriguez has held them to a .233 average and .693 OPS, while Lodolo has allowed a .257 average and .808 OPS. Arizona also owns the stronger season-long production against left-handed pitching, batting .274 with a .785 OPS, compared with Cincinnati’s .239 and .740. Lodolo can absolutely give the Reds five competitive innings—he just threw five scoreless against Miami—but his two starts since returning from the injured list have ended after four and five frames. Rodriguez has completed at least six innings in four of his last five starts.

That potential difference in starter length leads directly to Arizona’s other advantages. The Diamondbacks’ current bullpen carries a 3.23 ERA and 1.08 WHIP, against a 3.82 ERA and 1.27 WHIP for Cincinnati. Arizona has also committed 48 errors this season and four over its last seven games; the Reds have committed 71 and eight. Cincinnati arrives after playing seven consecutive days, while Arizona had Thursday off. I want the moneyline because the evidence says Arizona has the better route through nine innings, but it does not demand a multi-run result: all five meetings this season were decided by one run. At -142, I’ll pay for Rodriguez, the deeper bullpen and the cleaner defense without asking the Diamondbacks to cover the extra run.
