The read
The roof is closed at Chase Field, and two in-form left-handers take the mound with both clubs fighting for October position. This sets up as a tight game, but Arizona has the matchup and price I want.
The Diamondbacks have hit .277 with a .785 OPS against left-handed pitching and are 25-11 against left-handed starters. Their confirmed lineup has 5 RHB, 3 switch-hitters and only 1 LHB against Jesús Luzardo, who has allowed a .244 average and .711 OPS to righties compared with .147 and .379 against lefties. Corbin Carroll, Ketel Marte, Jordan Lawlar, Ildemaro Vargas and Ryan Waldschmidt all carry an OPS of .823 or better against left-handed pitching.
This is not a fade of Luzardo. His 1.79 road ERA and 1.31 August ERA explain why Philadelphia is favored. Eduardo Rodriguez, however, gives Arizona comparable run prevention: a 2.50 season ERA, a 2.47 ERA at Chase Field and just 2 ER across his last 18.2 innings. Philadelphia has hit .240 with a .703 OPS against lefties and is 26-22 against left-handed starters. Rodriguez also lacks a pronounced platoon weakness, holding righties to .224/.664 and lefties to .247/.638.
Arizona’s bullpen owns a 3.06 ERA and 1.08 WHIP for the season, compared with Philadelphia’s 3.37 and 1.20. Philadelphia has the better recent relief numbers, but Alex McFarlane, José Alvarado and Orion Kerkering each worked Sunday and Monday. With the starting-pitching gap narrow, Arizona holding the more favorable lineup matchup, and the home club offered at plus money, I’m backing the Diamondbacks to win.

I'm backing Rodriguez to hold Philadelphia to two earned runs or fewer. He has allowed more than two in only two of his last eight starts and just six of 27 all season.
He enters with two earned runs across his last 18.2 innings and a 2.47 ERA at Chase Field. Philadelphia owns a .703 OPS against left-handed pitching, while Rodriguez has limited left-handed batters to a .638 OPS and right-handed batters to a .664 OPS.
Arizona's bullpen carries a 3.06 ERA and 1.08 WHIP, giving the Diamondbacks reliable protection behind him.
Jesus LuzardoOVER 5.5 Strikeouts Strikeouts-116
Not yet graded
Luzardo has recorded at least six strikeouts in seven of his last eight starts and collected 27 over his last three. His sweeper has generated a 46.6% whiff rate and a 55.1% chase rate, giving him a dominant finishing pitch against Arizona's right-handed-heavy lineup. The Diamondbacks can still score against him, but Lawlar, Waldschmidt, Tawa, Carroll and Arenado provide enough strikeout opportunities for Luzardo to reach six.
