The read

Phoenix opens a seven-game homestand tonight at 1-4, two weeks after Portland beat them by 41. The Blazers arrive at 5-1, even without Ja Morant and Shaedon Sharpe.

I'm laying the 3.5 with Portland, and I don't need that 41-point game to do it. Take the opener out and Portland is still +4.8 per game while Phoenix is -3.0. That's a 7.8-point gap, so the Suns' home floor would have to be worth more than 4.3 points to make them the right side.

Even that -3.0 flatters Phoenix. The Suns went 1-2 against teams on the second night of a back-to-back. The win came over a Warriors team missing Curry, Green, Horford and Podziemski. They lost by 11 to a Thunder team without Holmgren, Jalen Williams and Wallace, then blew a 17-point lead at Golden State on Monday.

Denver offers a useful comparison. Portland won by 8 in Denver with less rest than the Nuggets, while Phoenix lost by 7 at home with more rest. Some of that is shooting, since Denver went 20-37 from three against Phoenix and 9-26 against Portland, but the gap is still hard to ignore.

The matchup points the same way. Phoenix has allowed at least 116 in all five games, and opponents are hitting 41.1% from three. Portland takes 44.2 threes a game. Portland is also +7.5 in rebounds per game to Phoenix's -6.8. Clingan just grabbed 18 boards, and Mark Williams and Fleming are out for the Suns. Without Morant, Portland is 2-0 and +30. All five of its wins have come by 7 or more, four of them on the road.

This isn't free money. Portland turns it over 15.3 times a game, and Phoenix scores 19.8 a game off turnovers. The Suns put up 120 and 131 in their two home games, with Booker scoring 43 in the second. It's also Portland's third straight road game, Lillard and Holiday are both 36, and Henderson now starts despite going just 18-for-53 this season. Phoenix won't shoot 6-32 from three again, and a 3-point Portland win loses this ticket.

Goodwin is questionable for the Suns, but that doesn't change my read. I'll take the better team at this number.

Phoenix Suns: Rasheer Fleming (Out) — Injury/Illness - Left Ankle Sprain; Jordan Goodwin (Questionable) — Injury/Illness - Right Calf Soreness; Mark Williams (Out) — Injury/Illness - Left Shoulder Surgery

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

REPLACEMENT

  • Ja Morant is OUT for POR

    OUT

Portland plays in Phoenix without Ja Morant, who was diagnosed with a Grade 2 left hamstring strain in reporting on Oct 30. The diagnosis points to more than a one-night absence. Portland's ball-handling props are the place to look, with the caveat that the market has known for days.

  • Jayson Kent is OUT for POR

    OUT

Jayson Kent is listed out because of a two-way G League designation, with no injury given.

  • John Tonje is OUT for POR

    OUT

John Tonje is listed out because of a two-way G League designation, with no injury given.

  • Mark Williams is OUT for PHX

    OUT

Williams had left shoulder surgery, reported Sep 11, so Phoenix has been planning around this for some time. It should already be in the price, though it does keep the frontcourt thinner during a losing run.

  • Shaedon Sharpe is OUT for POR

    OUT

Sharpe tore his meniscus, reported Aug 24, and remains out after surgery. Since this is long known, the number should already reflect it, and Deni Avdija's role in the offense has grown around that absence's reality.

  • Rasheer Fleming is Questionable for PHX

    Questionable

Fleming has a left ankle sprain, and earlier reporting today carried the same questionable status. Nothing here shows which way his status will go. Any PHX rotation angle against POR should wait for the final report.

  • Jordan Goodwin is Questionable for PHX

    Questionable

Goodwin has right calf soreness, and earlier reporting today carried the same questionable status. His availability is still open for POR at PHX. Any PHX rotation angle should wait until he is confirmed in or out.

STREAK

  • PHX has lost 3 straight

    L3

Phoenix has lost 3 straight by 7 a game and is 1-4 across its last 5. That is a poor run, but the margins are manageable and the sample is very small. This looks more like a team losing winnable games than one being blown out, at least over these 3. At home against Portland, see whether the price has dropped too far because of the record.

    Points Rebounds Assists under 19.5

    -122 · CASHED · ACTUAL 12

    Portland Trail Blazers

This number is paying for the promotion to the starting five more than for anything Scoot has produced. His best combined line this season is 18, and he has reached it twice, including the opener against this Phoenix team, when he got 15 points on 14 shots with plenty of loose minutes in a 41-point win. The two starts since Morant went down gave him 18 in Utah and 12 in Denver.

Starting hasn't changed his role much. Nori wants him guarding and attacking, while Lillard, Avdija and Holiday run most of the offense. Holiday also outplayed him in minutes in Denver, 31 to 26, and took over the game with 10 assists. Scoot had just three assists total across those two starts and doesn't add much on the glass, so he has to get nearly all of this through scoring, and he's been inefficient doing it. Phoenix's shaky defense gives him some room, which is why I'm laying a modest price, but he needs a career kind of night by his standards this year to beat 19.5.

MILES BRIDGESPOINTS REBOUNDS ASSISTS OVER 25.5
    NBAPhoenix Suns· -105

    Miles Bridges
    Points Rebounds Assists over 25.5

    -105 · CASHED · ACTUAL 30

    Phoenix Suns

Bridges has become the steadiest piece Phoenix has. Booker swings wildly from night to night and Green has been unreliable, while Bridges has gone 26, 29, 36 and 30 in the four games since the opener, playing between 32 and 37 minutes each time. He's getting real shot volume, and his boards and assists give him a floor when the shot isn't falling.

The frontcourt helps this bet. Mark Williams and Rasheer Fleming are both out, and Maluach has played just 13 and 17 minutes the last two games, so Bridges has to do a lot of the rebounding. Portland also takes a ton of threes and misses plenty of them, which should create long rebounds for him. His one bad game was the 12 in Portland, but that was a 41-point rout where nobody on the Suns had any rhythm. With the spread at 3.5, I expect a much more competitive game and a full workload for him. At close to even money, I'll take a line he's beaten in every normal game he's played.
