The read

TD Garden gets a 1-6 Bucks team tonight, but it won't get Jayson Tatum, who sits for rest with Boston in a stretch of eight games in 13 days. Milwaukee has earned its bad reputation, yet 11.5 asks a lot of this version of the Celtics.

Boston has won by 12 or more just twice in seven games, and both came against Chicago. In the other five games, the Celtics are a combined -8, including home wins of 4 over the Knicks and 1 in overtime over the Nets. All of that came with Tatum playing.

Tatum's absence hits the offense hard. Over the last five games, Tatum averaged 28.0 points and 7.4 assists and took 63 of Boston's 153 free throws. That has mattered with the Celtics shooting 45-for-159 from three over their last four games. The projected starting five is the same group that opened the 16-point loss at Houston, with Paul George in Tatum's spot. George can pass, but is 9-for-30 from three over the last four games played. Payton Pritchard is questionable with a shooting-shoulder injury and has missed all 12 threes over the last two games, and Devin Carter is out.

Milwaukee also has real ways to stay inside the number. The Bucks average 15.0 offensive rebounds and 19.0 second-chance points, and Boston allows 17.0 second-chance points. The back door is open too. Boston led Chicago by 32 on Oct. 30 and won by 14, and a big lead tonight probably means an early night for George and Derrick White. Milwaukee scored 35 in the fourth against Cleveland and 31 against Houston with its starters mostly sitting.

The risks are real. The Bucks allow 124.1 points a game, have given up 127 or more five times and scored just 100, 111 and 100 in their last three. They trailed by 33 and 26 after three quarters in their two worst losses. If Boston's shooters catch fire the way they did in a 21-for-44 night against Chicago, Tatum's absence won't matter much. The hook matters too, since two of Milwaukee's three road losses were by exactly 12.

Still, this is a price play, not a vote of confidence in the Bucks. Give me Milwaukee and the points against a short-handed Boston team that hasn't shown it can win by this much against anyone but Chicago.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

  • BOS won last season's series 3-1

    3-1

Boston beat Milwaukee in 3 of 4 last season, with an average margin of 18 a game. A number that large in 4 meetings can be pulled up by one lopsided night. Last season's gap is a starting point, and tonight's first meeting of this season will say more about whether it still applies.

REPLACEMENT

  • Devin Carter is OUT for BOS

    OUT

Carter is out with an illness, and Oct 18 reporting said he was diagnosed with mononucleosis, which came without a clear return date in what is available here. Boston has already been playing without him, so tonight's number should not move much.

  • Dillon Mitchell is Questionable for BOS

    Questionable

Mitchell is listed under a G League two-way designation, with no injury attached. The tag is about roster status. On its own, it gives little reason to change a view on MIL at BOS.

  • Amari Williams is Questionable for BOS

    Questionable

Williams is listed under a G League two-way designation, with no injury attached. The tag reflects roster status and says nothing about his health. On its own, it gives little reason to change a view on MIL at BOS.

  • Chris Cenac Jr. is Questionable for BOS

    Questionable

Cenac is on a G League assignment, and no injury is listed. The tag is about where he is assigned, so it says nothing about his health. This gives a bettor little to work with for MIL at BOS.

  • Jayson Tatum is Questionable for BOS

    Questionable

Tatum's tag is listed as rest, with no injury given, and it was already reported a day earlier. That makes this a decision on his workload, and the answer can come late. Any BOS side, total or prop against MIL looks different with or without him, so a number taken early carries that risk.

  • Payton Pritchard is Questionable for BOS

    Questionable

Pritchard has a right shoulder contusion and was already listed as questionable a day earlier. His status is unresolved for MIL at BOS. If a BOS prop or rotation angle depends on him, wait for the final report.

STREAK

  • MIL has lost 3 straight

    L3

Milwaukee has lost 3 straight by 23 a game, with a 1-6 mark on the recent stretch. Those are heavy losses, though 3 games can be skewed by one bad night and the margin is likely to shrink. A road game at Boston is a hard place to look for a quick fix, so the useful question is how much of that 23 the spread has already absorbed.

    NBAMilwaukee Bucks· -118

    Tyler Herro
    3-Pointers over 2.5

    -118 · CASHED · ACTUAL 4

    Milwaukee Bucks

Herro's threes hold up even when everything else around Milwaukee falls apart. Against Cleveland, Herro shot 5 of 18 overall in a 25-point loss and still made four threes in 27 minutes. Against Houston it was four more in the same 27 minutes, and at Minnesota Herro made four on 11 tries. That volume is why I like this market more than Herro's points. The usual fear with a double-digit underdog is an early hook, but those games show Herro gets this number before the bench takes over.

Boston is also the right opponent for it. Chicago got up 50 threes against the Celtics on Oct. 30, Brooklyn got up 50 and made 17 on Oct. 27, and Houston, Orlando and New York all made at least 14. With Tatum resting, Boston loses a big wing and leans on younger players on the perimeter, so Derrick White can't be everywhere. Milwaukee is starting Burries and Herro together in the backcourt, and Herro remains the shooter the offense runs through. At this price I'll take a high-volume shooter against a defense that gives up this many looks.

    JAIME JAQUEZ JR.REBOUNDS OVER 5.5
    NBAMilwaukee Bucks· +100

    Jaime Jaquez Jr.
    Rebounds over 5.5

    +100 · LOST · ACTUAL 2

    Milwaukee Bucks

The book has the under as the favorite, and I think that's backwards. Jaquez has been one of Milwaukee's steadiest rebounders from the wing, with eight at Minnesota, eight at Philadelphia, 11 against Chicago and seven in only 23 minutes against Cleveland. That Cleveland game matters because it shows Jaquez can clear this line even if a blowout shortens the night.

The matchup should supply plenty of misses. Boston takes threes in bulk, with 42 at Houston and 44 at Orlando, and it made just 12 in each game. Tatum is out tonight, which removes Boston's best shot creator. Pritchard is questionable with a sore shooting shoulder and has missed 12 straight threes, while White went 3 of 12 at Houston. A lot of long rebounds should land where wings can get them. Jaquez's worst recent rebounding night came against Houston, when the Rockets shot 46 of 84 and left little to clean up. I don't expect Boston to shoot that well without Tatum, and I'm happy to take even money on it.
