The read

Two teams with a combined three wins meet at Intuit Dome, and Miami is laying 5.5 on the road two nights after giving up 138 to the Lakers. I'm taking the points with the Clippers.

The number asks for more than the results support. Miami's average margin is -5.7 and the Clippers' is -7.3. Per 100 possessions, that's a gap of about 1.8 points before any credit for the home floor. Miami doesn't have an injury excuse either: the Heat had nobody Out in six of their seven games, so 2-5 is close to their real level. Their defense has allowed about 119.6 points per 100 possessions, worse than the Clippers' 116.1.

The Clippers should also be better tonight than their season numbers. Hachimura and Jones are both off the injury report. The only home game with both was a 25-point win over Sacramento, which is one game against a weak opponent, but the home losses to the Lakers and Raptors came without Hachimura. The Clippers even led Toronto by 13 after three quarters without either forward.

The shared opponent points the same way. Facing Doncic's Lakers on the road, the Clippers lost by 8. Miami lost by 21 with two days off against a Lakers team on the second night of a back-to-back.

The matchup helps too. Miami allows 42.1 three-point attempts a game, and opponents hit 41.0% of them. That percentage should cool, but the volume is real against a Clippers team shooting 38.4%. Turnovers are the Clippers' biggest flaw, at 20.1 a game with Garland's 38 leading the NBA. But they had 14 and 15 in their last two games, and Miami hasn't topped 9 steals in any game.

This can still lose. All six Clippers losses came by 7 or more, and Miami's two wins came by 20 and 12. The paint is Miami's clearest route: 70 and 64 paint points in those wins, against a Clippers team allowing 55.4 a game with Konan Niederhauser out and Jackson questionable. Lopez fouled out in 22 minutes Monday.

As of 5:31 PM ET, there was no final word on Jackson or Antetokounmpo, who is probable with a sprained shooting-hand wrist and expected to play. This pick doesn't need Antetokounmpo to sit. Jackson missing would lower my confidence without flipping the side. Rest isn't part of the case, since both teams have had one day off.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

  • MIA won last season's series 2-0

    2-0

Miami beat the Clippers twice last season by an average of 9 a game. Two meetings make for a thin record, so this should move easily once the teams play this season. Use it as background and put more weight on how each team looks now.

REPLACEMENT

  • Bradley Beal is OUT for LAC

    OUT

Beal is out under right knee injury management, and reporting from Oct 15 already said he would not be ready. The Clippers are also missing several others tonight. This absence is not new, so check whether the spread already accounts for it.

  • Yanic Konan Niederhauser is OUT for LAC

    OUT

Konan Niederhauser is out after right Lisfranc surgery, though the Clippers recently recalled him, which suggests he is working his way back. He is not part of tonight's picture, and his return is more relevant for later games.

  • Brandon Ingram is OUT for LAC

    OUT

Ingram is out after right heel surgery, though the Clippers recalled him on Nov 2, so he may be getting closer. He adds no scoring tonight, which leaves more on Darius Garland. His return is the thing to monitor for later games.

  • Jordan Miller is OUT for LAC

    OUT

Miller had left rotator cuff surgery, reported Aug 26, so this absence is long established and should already be in the Clippers' price. It offers little new for tonight.

  • Myron Gardner is Questionable for MIA

    Questionable

Gardner has a right quadriceps contusion, and earlier reporting today also listed him. His status is unresolved for MIA at LAC. Any MIA angle that involves him should wait until he is confirmed in or out.

STREAK

  • LAC has lost 6 straight

    L6

The Clippers have dropped 6 in a row by 12.7 a game, and their last 7 are 1-6. Losses that size point to more than bad luck in close games. Seven games is still a small sample, and the sheet doesn't show who they played. Against Miami, check whether the spread already charges them for the skid before giving the streak any more weight.

    NBAMiami Heat· -105

    Giannis Antetokounmpo
    Rebounds over 11.5

    -105 · CASHED · ACTUAL 14

    Miami Heat

Giannis has gone 12, 18, 18 and 14 on the glass over his last four games, and both 18s came in just 31 minutes. That matters with Golden State waiting tomorrow night, because he can clear this number even if Miami gets a lead and Spoelstra trims his run. The Clippers are a good opponent for it. Isaiah Jackson is questionable with a groin issue and could lose the starting job to Brook Lopez either way.

Lopez has pulled down 6, 2, 6, 3 and 1 in his last five, so he won't take many boards from Giannis. The depth behind them is thin enough that Baba Miller could be the backup center. Miami has no true backup big either, and Spoelstra is openly upset about the second chances his team allows, so the defensive rebounding load stays with Giannis and Bam. The right wrist sprain is on his shooting hand, which worries me more for his scoring than his rebounding, and that's why I'd rather bet his boards than his points.

His two low games came with foul trouble, when he fouled out at Charlotte and picked up five against Minnesota. That's the risk I'm taking at a near even price.

  • GARY'S PICK
ANDREW WIGGINSPOINTS REBOUNDS ASSISTS UNDER 18.5
    NBAMiami Heat· -137

    Andrew Wiggins
    Points Rebounds Assists under 18.5

    -137 · CASHED · ACTUAL 8

    Miami Heat

This line asks Wiggins to do more than he has been doing in this offense. His points number sits at 11.5, yet the combined number is seven higher, and over his last five games he has added 2, 3, 4, 4 and 2 in rebounds and assists. With Giannis, Bam and Bobby Portis on the floor, there aren't many boards left for him, and Giannis and Davion Mitchell do most of the playmaking. To get to 19 he realistically needs a mid-teens scoring night, and those have been rare.

His 22 at Atlanta took 18 points and four made threes. When he played a season-high 34 minutes against Dallas, he still finished with only 16. His minutes aren't secure either. Pelle Larsson has been playing 30 or more most nights, and Wiggins sat the entire fourth quarter twice in October.

Miami is also favored and has a game at Golden State tomorrow, so a comfortable lead would cut his run again. The Clippers' weak defense could give him a good shooting night, and a Giannis scratch would open up more touches, but I'll pay the price for a number set this far above his production.
