The read

Barclays Center gets a Wednesday night between two teams looking for a spark: Charlotte is 3-5 and has lost four straight, Brooklyn is 1-6, and Kon Knueppel finally makes a season debut. Laying 3.5 on the road with this Hornets team looks strange at first, but I think it's the right side.

Brooklyn has the better season numbers, about -8.5 per 100 possessions to Charlotte's -11.8. Those numbers undersell tonight's Hornets. Knueppel missed all eight games, and Coby White missed seven of them. Charlotte is also shooting just 29.6% from three (105-355), which has room to improve. The sample is skewed too: two Detroit games and one against Atlanta account for -88 of Charlotte's -90 point differential and half of its league-high 158 turnovers. Those opponents piled up 45 steals. Brooklyn had 7 in the first meeting and averages under 9.

The floor is solid even if the returns are limited. White played 16 minutes Monday and Knueppel could have a cap, but Dennis Schroder, Sion James and Grayson Allen can cover those minutes. Charlotte won in this building by 7 on Oct. 21 without White or Knueppel, taking 13 more shots and winning second-chance points 20-8.

Brooklyn's results also flatter it. The 4-point loss in Cleveland was 112-97 with 5:00 left, and the only win came against an Indiana team missing six players. The Nets are 0-3 at home, losing by an average of 16.7, and they lost Monday's fourth quarter 28-11 after leading the Knicks through three. This is also their third game in four nights. Julius Randle and Michael Porter Jr. played at least 36 minutes both Sunday and Monday, while no Hornet topped 31 in Monday's blowout.

There are real risks. Charlotte scored only about 97.8 per 100 during the skid, this starting five hasn't started together this season, and the turnovers could continue. Brooklyn averages 27.9 free throw attempts to Charlotte's 16.9 and led 25-15 in the first meeting. Nolan Traoré played just 16 minutes that night but now starts and has nine threes in the last two games, and Mikel Brown Jr. should be available. A 3-point Charlotte win still loses this ticket.

White is listed as probable with no game-day update. If White sits or Knueppel's minutes look very limited, this price loses much of its appeal. As it stands, I'm on Charlotte.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

  • CHA won last season's series 2-1

    2-1

Charlotte won 2 of 3 against Brooklyn last season, with an average margin of 12.3 a game. In just 3 meetings, one big win can inflate that figure. Tonight's first meeting this season will tell you more than last season's margin.

REPLACEMENT

  • Egor Demin is OUT for BKN

    OUT

Brooklyn is without Egor Demin against Charlotte because of a right bone bruise. Check Brooklyn's guard rotation and the next injury report, since the listing gives no return date.

  • Ben Saraf is OUT for BKN

    OUT

Ben Saraf is out because of a G League assignment, with no injury listed. Assignments can change quickly, so check Brooklyn's status again for the next game.

  • Kylan Boswell is OUT for CHA

    OUT

Kylan Boswell is listed out because of a two-way G League designation, with no injury given.

  • Grant Williams is OUT for CHA

    OUT

Williams remains out with a right hamstring strain, and he was already listed out on Nov 1. That makes this a continuation rather than a fresh change for Charlotte. Hamstrings can linger, so check his status again before later games.

  • Tyler Bilodeau is OUT for BKN

    OUT

Bilodeau is listed under a two-way G League designation for this game, and he had a shoulder issue reported Oct 25. He looks like a small factor for Brooklyn, so this should barely affect tonight's line.

STREAK

  • CHA has lost 4 straight

    L4

Charlotte has lost 4 straight by 15.5 a game, with a 3-5 mark on the recent stretch. The 3 wins show this team has looked better than the current run, and 4 games is a very short sample. At Brooklyn, a margin this large can push a number too far, so check how much of the skid is already in the spread.

    Brooklyn Nets

Julius Randle's production comes down to minutes, and this game should supply them. Randle's two low totals, 24 against Indiana and 26 against Detroit, came in lopsided losses where the night ended midway through the third. With real minutes, the totals have been 34 at Cleveland, 37 at Boston, 31 at Indiana and 34 at the Garden. With Charlotte laying only 3.5, Randle should be on the floor late.

The matchup helps too. Randle put up 33 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists on this same Hornets team in October, and Charlotte's habit of launching threes in bulk leaves plenty of missed shots to clean up on the defensive glass. Egor Demin is out and Mikel Brown Jr. is still on a minutes limit, so Brooklyn needs Randle as a creator as well as a scorer, and the free throw volume at the Garden gives Randle another way to get there on a cold shooting night. The danger is this team folding if it falls behind, as Randle admitted it has. Against a Charlotte side that has lost four straight and leads the league in turnovers, I'll back the over at this price.
