The read

Minnesota walks into Toyota Center tonight without Anthony Edwards, facing a 7-1 Rockets team that hasn't lost at home. The Wolves have held up well since Edwards went down, but I think this number still sits a little short of the real gap between these teams.

Start with who each team has played. Houston is winning by 12.9 points a game against opponents who are 30-16 in their other games, counting Dallas and Atlanta twice. Minnesota is +5.75 per game without Edwards, but against teams that are 10-15 in their other games. The Wolves are 2-2 in that stretch, beating the 1-6 Clippers and 1-6 Bucks and losing to Golden State and San Antonio, the two winning teams they faced.

At home, Houston is 4-0 with wins by 10, 16, 18 and 21. Those margins are a bit flattered, since Oklahoma City was badly short-handed and Boston was on a back-to-back without Paul George, but the Rockets took care of business every time.

Minnesota's offense leans hard on LaMelo Ball right now. Ball scored 34 and 24 in the two wins without Edwards, then 10 and 8 in the two losses, and fouls have been a problem too: disqualified at San Antonio, 5 fouls against Golden State. With Terrence Shannon Jr. also out, there's little shot creation behind Ball and Ayo Dosunmu. The Wolves are firing 41.25 threes a game without Edwards and making 35.2%, while Houston has held opponents to 29.9%, and nobody has made more than 13 against them. Some of that is luck, but it's the shot Minnesota relies on.

This isn't a free ride. With Clint Capela and Steven Adams out, Oscar Tshiebwe is the backup center and played only 7 minutes Monday. Minnesota averages 14.75 offensive rebounds, and Boston just beat Houston 13-9 on the offensive glass. The Wolves are also hard to blow out: only one of their three losses was by more than 7, and that came at San Antonio with Rudy Gobert out and Ball disqualified. Houston's slow pace, about 97 possessions a game, makes a margin harder to build, and the Rockets let a 117-95 lead over Atlanta shrink to a 120-110 final.

I'm not buying the Kevin Durant shot-volume noise, since Houston beat Boston by 16 with Durant shooting 5-6. Rest is even, with both teams on one day off. It's only eight games of evidence, so this is a measured play, but I'll lay the 7.5 with Houston at home.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

  • MIN won last season's series 2-1

    2-1

Minnesota won 2 of 3 against Houston last season, but the average margin was just 0.3 a game. That makes the series close to even, whatever the record says. Three meetings give no strong read on either side, so don't take much from the series winner tonight.

REPLACEMENT

  • Steven Adams is OUT for HOU

    OUT

Houston won't have Steven Adams against Minnesota because of a right soleus strain. The issue has been in the reporting since Oct 26, so tonight's number may already reflect it. Compare how Houston's frontcourt minutes and rebounding props are priced once the rotation is clear.

  • Anthony Edwards is OUT for MIN

    OUT

Minnesota plays in Houston without Anthony Edwards, who had right knee arthroscopy reported on Oct 29. The absence has been public for days, so the spread likely accounts for it. Minnesota's secondary scorers are the place to compare prices against their expected role.

  • Quadir Copeland is OUT for HOU

    OUT

Quadir Copeland is listed out because of a two-way G League designation, with no injury given.

  • Julian Phillips is OUT for HOU

    OUT

Julian Phillips is listed out because of a two-way G League designation, with no injury given.

  • Donte DiVincenzo is OUT for MIN

    OUT

DiVincenzo remains out after right Achilles surgery, and Minnesota has known about this for a long time. It should not move tonight's number on its own, and the rotation has had time to settle without him.

  • Clint Capela is Questionable for HOU

    Questionable

Capela has a right ankle sprain and carried the same tag a day earlier, so there has been no clear sign of progress. His status can go either way before tip. Any view on HOU's rotation against MIN depends on his status, so it makes sense to hold off until he is ruled in or out.

  • Terrence Shannon Jr. is Questionable for MIN

    Questionable

Shannon has a left hip contusion and was also listed as questionable a day earlier. That leaves his status open heading into MIN at HOU. If your view on MIN depends on him, confirm that he is playing first.

    Alperen Sengun
    Assists over 6.5

    +120 · CASHED · ACTUAL 10

    Houston Rockets

The Houston offense runs through Sengun whenever he plays, and his assists have climbed with every appearance: 5, 7, 7, 9, 9, 10. The back strain doesn't look like a drag anymore. He has logged 33 and 38 minutes since returning, and with Capela and Adams both out, Tshiebwe is the only real center behind him. That protects his floor time even if the game gets loose.

The matchup helps too. Teams are loading up on Durant, and Udoka has said he wants to move him away from those double teams. That puts the ball in Sengun's hands as the release valve, with Jabari Smith Jr. hitting from deep and Amen Thompson cutting off him. Gobert tends to stay home near the rim, which gives Sengun time to read the floor, and Minnesota has less perimeter pressure without Edwards and Shannon.

A blowout is the main risk, but he still had 9 assists in 33 minutes in a 21 point win over Oklahoma City. At plus money, I'm happy to bet on the player making Houston's offense go.

    Kevin Durant
    Points under 22.5

    -107 · CASHED · ACTUAL 21

    Houston Rockets

This line is priced closer to Durant's reputation than his current role. His 28 at Dallas took 20 shots with Sengun out. In his last four games alongside Sengun, he has scored 22, 22, 14 and 12, and he took just 9 and 6 shots in the last two. He got one shot in 16 second half minutes against Boston, and defenses are shading toward him even when he doesn't have the ball.

His minutes are also working against the over. Udoka has said he wants them to come down, and Durant sat the entire fourth quarter against both Atlanta and Oklahoma City. Houston is favored by 7.5 at home, so another early exit is a real possibility. He'll also see a lot of Jaden McDaniels, the kind of long, active defender who can make him work for his catches.

The case against me is simple: Udoka has promised to get him better spots, and a trip to the line can rescue a quiet shooting night. Even so, he needs a real jump in volume to clear this, and Smith, Sengun and Thompson have all been getting their share. I'll take the under at this price.
