The read

Two days after a tight one in Cleveland, these teams run it back at Paycom Center, with Alex Caruso off Oklahoma City's injury report. The Thunder won Monday by 5 on the road, and now they need to win by 4 at home against a Cavaliers team that's still short-handed.

Monday's result holds up. Neither team's shooting was out of line: OKC's effective field goal percentage was 49.0 against 49.4 for the season, and Cleveland's was 54.4 against 55.2. The one fluke helped OKC, because Cleveland went 14-24 at the line. At the Cavs' season rate of about 75%, that's roughly 4 more points, so it was closer to a 1-point game. But OKC played that game on the road, and tonight it's at home. The physical edge should travel too. The Thunder won the paint 50-30 and the boards 54-46, with Isaiah Hartenstein and Aday Mara combining for 23 rebounds in 48 minutes. Peyton Watson and Jaylon Tyson are still out, and Monday was Cleveland's first game without both.

Caruso is the main change, though I haven't seen official confirmation that Caruso will play. Caruso's last full game produced 12 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists in 22 minutes, while Josh Dix went scoreless in 12 minutes Monday. Jaylin Williams is questionable with back spasms, but a scratch wouldn't move me. Williams has 6 points over the last three games, and Mara is among those in line for more minutes.

The skepticism on OKC looks overdone. The Thunder have been outscored by 29 in four games since losing Chet Holmgren, Cason Wallace and Jalen Williams, but three of those were on the road. They trailed Dallas by 13 and Houston by 17 after three quarters, then lost by 24 and 21 with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander sitting the fourth. The one home game was an 11-point win over Phoenix on a back-to-back. Cleveland is also softer than 4-3 looks: outside the 25-point win in Milwaukee, the Cavs' other six games net to exactly zero, and they blew leads of 29 in Philadelphia and 15 in Atlanta.

The risk is the three-point line. Over its last four games, OKC is 39-127 from deep while opponents are 70-185, and Cleveland takes 41 a game. Gilgeous-Alexander also needed 35 shots for 43 points Monday, and OKC led just 105-104 with five minutes left. A 3-point win loses this ticket, so this is a modest play, but I'll lay it.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

  • OKC won last season's series 2-0

    2-0

Oklahoma City beat Cleveland twice last season by an average of 20 a game. Two meetings are too few to define this matchup, and a margin that big is hard to carry forward. Tonight is the first meeting this season, so weigh who is actually available above last season's result.

REPLACEMENT

  • Cason Wallace is OUT for OKC

    OUT

Cason Wallace is out against Cleveland after surgery on the left shoulder, reported on Oct 31. A surgical absence should hold beyond tonight. Oklahoma City's guard minutes are the place to look, and props there may have adjusted already.

  • Chet Holmgren is OUT for OKC

    OUT

Chet Holmgren is out against Cleveland while recovering from a biological treatment on the right knee, reported on Oct 31. Oklahoma City's interior minutes and rebounding are the natural spots to examine. The absence is known, so props may already account for it.

  • Thomas Sorber is OUT for OKC

    OUT

Thomas Sorber is out against Cleveland after right knee surgery. The status was reported on Nov 3, so it should come as no surprise to the market.

  • Nikola Topic is OUT for OKC

    OUT

Nikola Topic is out against Cleveland after low back surgery. The listing was reported on Nov 3, so any effect on Oklahoma City's guard minutes should already be known.

  • Jaylon Tyson is OUT for CLE

    OUT

Jaylon Tyson is out in Oklahoma City with a right ankle sprain, reported on Nov 3. Cleveland's wing minutes are the spot to check, and the next report will show whether this lasts beyond tonight.

  • Peyton Watson is OUT for CLE

    OUT

Peyton Watson is out for Cleveland in Oklahoma City with right hamstring tightness and soreness, reported on Nov 3. The wording suggests something that could be reassessed soon, so check the next report before assuming a longer absence.

  • Khalifa Diop is OUT for CLE

    OUT

Khalifa Diop is out because of a G League assignment, with no injury listed.

  • Nae'Qwan Tomlin is OUT for CLE

    OUT

Nae'Qwan Tomlin is out for Cleveland with a low back stress reaction. No return timeline is listed, so check the next report.

  • Ernest Udeh, Jr. is OUT for CLE

    OUT

Ernest Udeh, Jr. is listed out because of a two-way G League designation, with no injury given.

  • Jalen Williams is OUT for OKC

    OUT

Jalen Williams is out against Cleveland after left ankle surgery, reported on Oct 28. A post-surgery absence is unlikely to change on short notice, so this is more of a standing fact than breaking news. Look for value in how the remaining Oklahoma City scorers are priced, since the news itself is likely in the line.

  • Jaylin Williams is Questionable for OKC

    Questionable

Williams has low back spasms and carried the same tag a day earlier. His status is still open for CLE at OKC. Any OKC rotation angle that involves him should wait for the final report.

    Isaiah Hartenstein
    Rebounds over 10.5

    -114 · CASHED · ACTUAL 12

    Oklahoma City Thunder

With Chet Holmgren gone for the next couple of months, Isaiah Hartenstein is the rebounding plan in Oklahoma City. Since Holmgren went down, Hartenstein has posted 13, 14, 7 and 14, and the 7 came at Houston in a game that was out of hand after three quarters. Monday's meeting was much closer to what I expect tonight: a five point game, with Hartenstein pulling 14 in 28 minutes against Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley.

Cleveland has also been loose on its own glass, giving up 15 offensive boards in each of its last three games. The Cavaliers took 49 threes on Monday, and those long misses keep the rebound chances coming. If Jaylin Williams sits with the back spasms, Aday Mara could pick up some of that time, but Hartenstein's workload has held at 25 to 28 minutes through all of this. I'll lay the small price.

    JARED MCCAINPOINTS UNDER 13.5
    NBAOklahoma City Thunder· -127

    Jared McCain
    Points under 13.5

    -127 · CASHED · ACTUAL 9

    Oklahoma City Thunder

This number sits above Jared McCain's 10.3 season average, and the role is moving the wrong way. McCain went to the bench on Monday, and Alex Caruso is now off the injury report after missing three games, which threatens to take more guard minutes. The offense also runs heavily through Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Ajay Mitchell, who combined for 51 shots on Monday, so McCain's looks are hard to count on.

The last three games produced 7, 10 and 10 points on a 0 for 16 stretch from three. McCain can get hot, as the 6 for 8 night in San Antonio showed, and some of those threes will start to fall. Even a modest bounce back still has to clear this line, though, and the inside game hasn't been there to help: McCain took 38 shots over those three games and scored only 27 points. A return to the lineup wouldn't worry me if Jaylin Williams sits, since McCain started at Dallas and Houston and scored 10 both times.
