The read
The Bulls walk into Madison Square Garden at 1-6, a week after blowing a 19-point lead to these same Knicks in Chicago. New York is 3-4 and without Josh Hart, and it has to win by 12 to cash this ticket.
I'm laying the points with the Knicks, but this is a small play. New York has won by 12 or more only twice in seven games, so this number is close to fair, with a slight edge to the home side.
Start with the common opponents. The Knicks lost at Boston by 4 and at Philadelphia by 5, though Philadelphia was missing Jaylen Brown that night. The Bulls lost at Boston by 14 and 35, and at Philadelphia by 19. Chicago has lost four of five road games by 14 or more, and the lone exception was a win at Milwaukee, which has one win in its other six games. The Bulls have allowed at least 124 points in all seven games and have trailed after every first quarter, by 10.7 on average.
The first meeting flatters Chicago too. The Bulls were at home, shot 18-42 from three against 27.9% on the season, and faced a Knicks team on a back-to-back that played Mikal Bridges just 13 minutes. New York also shot well at 22-48, but it still won by 6. Now the game moves to the Garden.
Hart's absence hurts less than it looks. Landry Shamet is the likely starter and has outshot Hart from three over the last five games, 13-26 to 9-26. The real cost is on the glass: Hart had 32 rebounds to Shamet's 6 in that span, and Chicago averages 14 offensive boards. Nic Claxton is questionable and hasn't played this season. Reports point to restricted minutes, probably off the bench, if Claxton plays at all, and that won't fix this defense.
Here's what could beat this ticket. The Knicks' average margin is only +1.3, all four of their losses were by single digits, and their two big wins came by just 13 and 14. Their last two games had about 89 possessions, and a slow game makes a 12-point win harder. Chicago's -16.3 average margin is also inflated by losses of 35 and 43; without those it's -7.2. The Bulls average 34.3 free throws and 42.6 threes a game, which can close a gap late, as they showed by cutting a 25-point deficit to 14 in the fourth at Boston.
I land just past the number on New York, and that's enough for a small stake.

The research
The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.
HEAD-TO-HEAD
NYK won last season's series 3-1
3-1New York won 3 of 4 against Chicago last season by an average of 12 a game. That is a real edge across a small set of games, and those games belong to last season. Check whether this season's form and availability support the same gap before leaning on it.
REPLACEMENT
Josh Hart is Questionable for NYK
QuestionableHart has right ankle soreness and was also questionable a day earlier. His status is still open for CHI at NYK. If your read on NYK depends on him, confirm that he is playing before you bet it.
Nicolas Claxton is Questionable for CHI
QuestionableNicolas Claxton is questionable for Chicago in New York with a left hamstring strain. Chicago's frontcourt props depend on the final call, so waiting for it removes a big unknown.
STREAK
CHI has lost 5 straight
L5Chicago has lost 5 straight by 15.6 a game and is 1-6 over its last 7, so this has been a run of lopsided games. Five games is a short stretch and the sheet doesn't list the opponents, so the margin is likely to come down at some point. Tonight's trip to New York is a spot to ask whether the number has already priced in the blowouts.

2- GARY'S PICKJALEN BRUNSONASSISTS UNDER 7.5
This number is above anything Brunson has done this year. His high is seven, and he only matched it against Chicago on a night the Knicks scored 133 and piled up 32 assists as a team. Kolek took nine of those in 18 minutes, and the Brunson and Kolek pairing has become a real part of what Mike Brown does.
With Hart out, more of the ball should come Brunson's way, but he has been a shot-first guard all season, so I expect extra touches to turn into extra attempts. Shamet likely takes the open spot, and he adds shooting more than another reason for Brunson to pile up assists. Towns also keeps some of the playmaking from the elbow.
If New York covers a number this big, Brunson could lose fourth quarter minutes as well. It's a steep price, and I'll pay it because the line sits so far above his actual role.
- GARY'S PICKJOSH GIDDEYPOINTS UNDER 11.5
Giddey runs this offense as a passer, and the shots go to Wilson, Powell, Buzelis and Smith. When he lit up the Knicks for 11 assists last week, he scored just 10 on nine shots in a game where Chicago put up 127. The two straight 13s that pushed this number up came from a pile of three-point attempts, and I don't expect him to keep shooting that many.
He also gives himself no cushion at the line. Chicago leads the league in free throw attempts, yet he rarely gets more than a couple. His minutes have been modest too, and an 11.5-point spread at the Garden raises the chance he sits late.
I'll gladly take plus money on a guard whose scoring usually lands in the single digits or just above.
