The read

A 7-1 team walks into Little Caesars Arena tonight to face a 6-1 team, and the 76ers are still getting 2.5 points. I'll take them, as long as Joel Embiid is on the floor.

Start with the obvious counterargument: Detroit already won this matchup, 106-93 in Philadelphia on Oct. 25. But the 76ers were on a back-to-back without Embiid or VJ Edgecombe, and they shot 7-27 from three. Detroit only gets Ausar Thompson back from that game, so Philadelphia has more to gain in the rematch.

The full-strength numbers also favor Philadelphia. The projected five of Tyrese Maxey, Edgecombe, Jaylen Brown, LeBron James and Embiid is 4-0 and winning by 9.5, including a win at New York and one over Cleveland. Detroit's current starters are 3-1, with wins over Charlotte (3-5) twice and Brooklyn (1-6), then a 14-point loss to the Knicks.

Detroit's turnover game also looks less scary against this opponent. The Pistons forced 25, 24 and 27 against Charlotte and Brooklyn, but only 11 to 18 against Boston, Miami, Philadelphia and New York. The 76ers average just under 13.

The biggest edge is inside, with Jalen Duren out. Detroit has been outrebounded in four straight games, and Paul Reed has 4, 4 and 5 boards over the last three. Karl-Anthony Towns put up 27 on 12-21 against this frontcourt, and John Collins is 6-22 over the last four games.

This isn't a free ride. Embiid is reportedly on a restriction, calls the foot painful and is 8-23 over the last two appearances, while backup Adem Bona has 5 points in the last three games combined. Philadelphia's whole +46 point differential came in fourth quarters, and the 76ers are dead even through three. Detroit is +57 through three, though much of that came against weak teams. Cade Cunningham scored 33 in just 27 minutes Monday, and Brown admits the knee has been sore.

That's why this is a modest play. Neither lineup is confirmed, so check Embiid's status before tip. If Embiid sits, the matchup edge mostly goes away and I'm off it.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

  • DET won last season's series 4-0

    4-0

Detroit swept last season's matchup by 14.3 a game across 4 meetings, so the games were one-sided. That is last season's result, and tonight is the first meeting this season, so it may not carry over. Jalen Duren being out also changes this Detroit team. Use the sweep as background on the matchup, then lean on how these teams look now.

REPLACEMENT

  • Jalen Duren is OUT for DET

    OUT

Duren is out with a right hamstring strain, and Oct 25 reporting called for a re-evaluation in two weeks. Detroit has kept winning during this absence, so the bigger question for a bettor is how the frontcourt holds up against Philadelphia, and when he returns.

  • Isaiah Joe is OUT for DET

    OUT

Isaiah Joe sits against Philadelphia with a right hip contusion, and the news has been out since Nov 3. That gives the market a full day to adjust. Check Detroit's wing props for any leftover value, and watch the next report since no longer timeline is listed.

  • Ugonna Onyenso is OUT for DET

    OUT

Ugonna Onyenso is listed out because of a two-way G League designation, with no injury given.

  • Dominick Barlow is OUT for PHI

    OUT

Barlow is out with a low back stress reaction, and that kind of injury is worth monitoring beyond tonight. His absence matters most for frontcourt minutes, with Ariel Hukporti also out. Check who picks up those minutes against Detroit before looking at rebounding or role-player props.

  • Ariel Hukporti is OUT for PHI

    OUT

Hukporti has a right Achilles tear, reported Oct 6, so this is a long absence the market already knows about. With Dominick Barlow also out, Philadelphia's frontcourt depth is the thing to check against Detroit.

  • Elijah Harkless is Questionable for DET

    Questionable

Harkless is tagged because of a G League two-way designation, with no injury listed. This is a roster status item, so it says nothing about his health. It gives little to act on for PHI at DET unless the final report changes.

  • Isaac Jones is Questionable for DET

    Questionable

Jones is listed under a G League two-way designation, with no injury attached. The tag reflects roster status and says nothing about his health. There is little here for a bettor to act on in PHI at DET without more information.

STREAK

  • PHI has won 4 straight

    W4

Philadelphia has won 4 straight by 8.5 a game and is 7-1 across its last 8. That margin is solid without being extreme, which makes it easier to believe than a run of blowouts. Eight games is still a small sample and the opponents aren't listed. A road game at Detroit is a useful test, so weigh the form against the price instead of backing the streak on its own.

  • DET has won 3 straight

    W3

Detroit has won 3 straight by 19 a game and is 6-1 across its last 7. The record backs up the run, but a 19-point average over 3 games is very likely to come down. The sheet doesn't show who those opponents were. Against Philadelphia, make sure the spread isn't asking Detroit to keep winning at a pace that 3 games can't really support.

    Philadelphia 76ers

The number sits below anything Maxey has given us this year. His lowest total is 34, and he got there on a night he scored 26 with 4 rebounds and 4 assists. He has a lot of ways to reach it. Detroit made him work on October 25 and he still put up 29, 5 and 4, though Ausar Thompson sat that game and Thompson's length is the biggest problem for him tonight. If the Pistons load up and shrink his looks, I can live with that too. Against Chicago he took only 15 shots and turned it into 26 points and 11 assists, because he keeps making the right read when the defense comes to him.

The workload around him also helps. Joel Embiid is dealing with a painful foot and is being described as on a restriction. Jaylen Brown says his knee has been sore and he hasn't felt like his normal athletic self. That leaves more of the offense with Maxey, who has played at least 34 minutes every night. A game priced this tight should keep him on the floor late, and I like taking his combined line at a shorter price than his points alone.

    John Collins
    Points under 11.5

    -103 · LOST · ACTUAL 16

    Detroit Pistons

This line is still paying for two games from October. Collins hit five threes in Miami for 23, then scored 16 on 15 shots against Philadelphia with Ausar Thompson out and 34 minutes to fill. Since Thompson came back, Collins has scored 2, 4, 4 and 4. He is 6 for 22 from the field over that stretch and hasn't made a three.

The role is the reason I trust the slump. Paul Reed has taken over the finishing work inside with Jalen Duren out, and Detroit runs its offense through Cade Cunningham, Duncan Robinson's shooting and Thompson's cuts. Daniss Jenkins, Ronald Holland and Kevin Huerter are all getting their shots too. The usual worry on an under like this is a close game pushing his minutes up, but he played 27 minutes in New York and scored 2, then 26 in Brooklyn and scored 4. Embiid also missed that first meeting and should be back at the rim tonight, even on limited minutes. Getting close to even money on a player who needs a real change in role to clear this is a good price.
