The read

Trae Young faces the Hawks for the first time tonight, with McCollum and Kispert back in Washington on the other side. The reunion will get the headlines, but this game looks more likely to be decided in the paint, and that's why I'm on the Wizards +2.5.

Atlanta is weaker than its 4-4 record looks. The Hawks are +47 against Charlotte and -37 across their other seven games, while Washington is +14 in seven. Monday's win at Indiana was a mirage too: the Pacers were on a back-to-back and missing ten players, and Atlanta still won by only 4 despite shooting 23-51 from three. At the 32.8% the Hawks shot in their other seven games, that's about six fewer threes.

The real mismatch is inside. Atlanta has allowed 60 paint points a game over its last five, including a 54-26 deficit Monday. With Landale out, Okongwu has only Newell and Ejiofor for backup, and Okongwu has had 5 fouls in two of the last four games. Davis just went 12-17, and Washington won by 9 Monday with Ayton starting for Sarr. The free-throw line tilts the same way: the Wizards shoot 27.0 a game, the Hawks allow 27.0, and Atlanta shoots only 20.4.

Pace helps too. Washington's last four games ran 92-94 possessions against Atlanta's average of about 102, and a slower game gives the Hawks fewer chances to pull away. The Wizards are also 2-1 and +15 with Dybantsa, who has scored 19, 17 and 21 as the minutes have climbed.

This isn't risk-free. Atlanta averages 95.5 shots to Washington's 82.0 and grabs 13.5 offensive rebounds a game against a team allowing 14.4. Opponents are shooting just 28.6% from three against Washington, which looks due to rise. The Wizards' last two wins came over short-handed Charlotte and Orlando teams, and Flemings returns for Atlanta.

Injury news is the last piece. Johnson, Sarr and Coulibaly are all questionable, with no final rulings as of this afternoon. Johnson sitting is the best case for this ticket. Johnson playing while Sarr and Coulibaly both sit is the one scenario where I'd pass.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

  • ATL won last season's series 3-1

    3-1

Atlanta took 3 of 4 from Washington last season and won by 11.8 a game on average. Tonight is the first meeting this season, so that margin comes entirely from last year's games. Four games is a small base, and it should count for less than how both teams look now.

REPLACEMENT

  • Keshon Gilbert is OUT for ATL

    OUT

Keshon Gilbert is listed out because of a two-way G League designation, with no injury given.

  • Jalen Wilson is OUT for ATL

    OUT

Jalen Wilson is listed out because of a two-way G League designation, with no injury given.

  • Tristan Vukcevic is OUT for WAS

    OUT

Vukcevic is out with a left hip impingement and was already listed out for Monday's game. This thins Washington's big-man rotation behind Anthony Davis, so check how his minutes get covered.

  • Reece Beekman is OUT for WAS

    OUT

Reece Beekman is out against Atlanta with a right AC joint injury, which the Wizards announced on Nov 2. Washington's guard minutes are the spot to check, and the market has had time to adjust.

  • Justin Champagnie is OUT for WAS

    OUT

Justin Champagnie is out against Atlanta after right foot surgery. Reporting on Oct 28 pointed to an extended absence, so this should hold past tonight, and Washington's prices have had time to absorb it.

  • Jock Landale is OUT for ATL

    OUT

Atlanta is without Jock Landale in Washington because of a left hip strain, reported on Nov 3. Look at how Atlanta's big-man minutes and rebounding props are priced, then check the next report for Landale's status.

  • Henri Veesaar is OUT for ATL

    OUT

Veesaar was diagnosed with a torn right ACL back on Sep 21, so this absence is long known and should already be in Atlanta's price. Tonight's line gets no fresh information from it.

  • Mouhamed Gueye is OUT for ATL

    OUT

Gueye had surgery on a left foot fracture, reported Oct 19, so Atlanta has had time to adjust its rotation. Since the absence is old news, it should move little tonight, though it does leave the frontcourt thinner alongside Henri Veesaar's injury.

  • Jamir Watkins is OUT for WAS

    OUT

Watkins is out after left ACL surgery, announced Jul 30, so this is a long-known absence. It should already be priced in and offers little new for tonight.

  • Alexandre Sarr is Questionable for WAS

    Questionable

Sarr has left knee soreness and was listed the same way a day earlier, so his status is still unresolved. If he sits, WAS's numbers with him on the floor stop being a clean guide for tonight. Wait for the final word before betting a WAS side or prop.

  • Anthony Gill is Questionable for WAS

    Questionable

Gill is dealing with low back spasms and was also questionable a day earlier. Nothing here says which way he is leaning. Any WAS rotation angle depends on the final report, so check that first.

  • Jalen Johnson is Questionable for ATL

    Questionable

Johnson has a left ankle sprain, and the same tag was out a day earlier, so the ankle has not cleared up yet. A questionable tag leaves his status open in either direction. If you like an ATL number or a teammate's prop, wait for his status, because the price can move once it is known.

  • RayJ Dennis is Questionable for ATL

    Questionable

Dennis is listed under a G League two-way designation, with no injury attached. The tag is about roster status. On its own, it gives little reason to change a view on ATL at WAS.

    Atlanta Hawks

This price is leaning on one strange night. McCollum handed out 12 at Indiana with Jalen Johnson and Kingston Flemings both out, against a Pacers team missing most of its rotation, while Nickeil Alexander-Walker was busy hitting nine threes. McCollum had to run everything that night, and that job shrinks tonight.

Flemings is back from the suspension and has been creating in a hurry, with five assists in 16 minutes against Cleveland and six in 25 at New Orleans. Dyson Daniels handles the ball too, and Johnson could return as the lead creator. With Flemings available, McCollum has mostly played as a scorer and finished with one to three assists, with the eight against Cleveland as the outlier. This is also McCollum's first game back in Washington, and I expect more shot hunting than table setting. Getting plus money on the under makes this my favorite number on the board.

    Dyson Daniels

    Atlanta Hawks

The first week is still propping up this line. Daniels shot 8 of 13 at Orlando and 8 of 11 against Houston, and those nights produced totals of 27 and 29. The recent run looks very different: 8, 18, 15, 15 and 19.

That 19 is what sells me. Daniels played 31 minutes at Indiana with Johnson and Flemings both out, grabbed nine rebounds against a depleted team, and still fell short of this number. So I don't need a ruling on Johnson to like this, because Daniels came up short even with the extra opportunity, and Flemings coming back takes some of the ball away regardless.

The matchup doesn't help either. Daniels rarely looks for a three, so the points have to come inside, and that means dealing with Anthony Davis and a Washington team that has been blocking shots all season. The Wizards have also played at a slower pace over their last three games, which means fewer chances to pile up counting stats. I'll take the under at a fair price.
