Sports picks for Monday, August 25, 2025

I’m backing Boston because Bernardino has held hitters to a .196 average, and that stingy contact profile punishes an Orioles lineup with swing holes. Baltimore’s middle bats are strikeout prone—Cowser has 79 punchouts in 227 at-bats and Jackson has 20 in 54—so Bernardino can get ahead and dictate. On the other side, Sugano’s .262 batting average against invites traffic for Boston’s core, and Bregman is batting .305 which keeps rallies alive. If there’s a worry it’s Bernardino’s workload, but Baltimore’s lack of on-base pressure—Mayo has 17 walks in 167 at-bats and Cowser just 16 in 227—makes it unlikely the O’s string together the long innings needed to flip this, so take the short road favorite with me.

I’m backing Miami because Edward Cabrera’s 3.52 ERA tells me he keeps this game on script. His 1.22 WHIP and .236 opponent average limit traffic, which blunts an Atlanta order that leans on disciplined hitters more than sheer slug. Spencer Strider’s 5.24 ERA says he’s been leaking runs, and Agustín Ramírez’s 18 homers give Miami the one-swing punishment when he falls behind. I respect that Strider still misses bats with 102 strikeouts in 89.1 innings, but that .267 opponent average suggests enough contact for Miami to scratch the handful they need behind Cabrera—have the guts to ride with me.

I’m backing Tampa at even money because Ian Seymour’s 1.16 WHIP and .216 opponents’ average should smother a Cleveland lineup that doesn’t scare you. Angel Martínez at .231 and Bo Naylor at .180 tell you the middle is thin for crooked numbers. Tanner Bibee has 129 strikeouts, but a .255 opponents’ average leaves damage on the table for Tampa’s power bats. The risk is Seymour’s small 23.1-inning sample, yet 26 strikeouts show the bat-missing is real, so if you’ve got the guts, ride the value with me.

I’m laying the hook with the Yankees because Brad Lord’s 77 strikeouts in 96.1 innings don’t finish enough hitters, and that plays right into Aaron Judge’s 40-homer thunder and Ben Rice’s 20-homer lift. Cam Schlittler’s 3.22 ERA with a .235 average against and 38 strikeouts in 36.1 frames fits this matchup, since Washington leans on light contact with only CJ Abrams at 17 homers while Brady House is fanning plenty with 53 strikeouts in 186 at-bats. Sure, Schlittler’s 1.32 WHIP means a few baserunners, but the Nats lack the punch to turn traffic into crooked numbers, while Judge’s 89 walks signal the Yankees will control the big pitches late. I’m riding the run line—got the guts to ride with me?

I’m riding Toronto on the moneyline because Scherzer’s 1.08 WHIP will squeeze a Twins order that chases, and Buxton alone has 112 strikeouts, so Max’s put-away stuff plays. Minnesota’s supporting bats haven’t carried their weight, with Brooks Lee at .249, which means traffic dries up once Max gets ahead. The risk is Joe Ryan’s 2.96 ERA, but Bichette’s .304 stroke gives Toronto the kind of steady contact that turns long counts into runs. With the Jays at 76-55 facing a 59-71 club, I expect the better, deeper lineup to edge a tight one—so we take the ML, not the run line; got the guts to keep it simple?

I’m backing the Mets because Kodai Senga’s .211 opponent average smothers a Phillies lineup that leans on singles outside Bryce Harper’s 21 homers. Alec Bohm’s .282 bat plays when traffic builds, and Senga’s 2.58 ERA says he doesn’t let that happen often. The risk is Cristopher Sánchez missing bats all night—169 strikeouts in 157 innings—but New York can win without a rally because Lindor, Nimmo, and Mullins have 61 homers and one barrel can flip a tight game. With Senga keeping baserunners scarce and the Mets owning the bigger secondary power, the plus money at home is worth riding if you’ve got the guts.

I’m backing Milwaukee because Brandon Woodruff’s 0.85 WHIP and .167 opponent average choke off rallies before they start, and that’s exactly how you suffocate a road lineup. He’s punched out 55 in 43.2 innings, so when he gets strike one, Arizona’s bats get defensive and the weak contact piles up. Across the field, Eduardo Rodriguez’s 5.40 ERA invites crooked numbers, and his 1.61 WHIP should give Andrew Vaughn and company the traffic they need. Sure, Milwaukee’s sticks can run cold and Rodriguez has 115 strikeouts, but Carroll’s 126 Ks and Woodruff’s command tilt the high‑leverage spots toward the home side—ride with the bully on the mound.

I’m riding Kansas City on the moneyline because Noah Cameron owns a 2.53 ERA with a 1.07 WHIP, and that .208 opponent average punishes a Chicago lineup with more holes than hustle; Benintendi at .229 and Montgomery at .230 are leaning on sporadic pop while Baldwin and Mead have combined 111 strikeouts in 381 at-bats. Shane Smith’s .228 opponent average isn’t soft, but a 4.12 ERA and 1.29 WHIP turn into traffic when Bobby Witt Jr. hits .297 with 151 knocks and grinders like Isbel at .264 and Frazier at .267 keep innings alive. The only worry is a low-scoring slog if Smith lands early strikes, yet Kansas City’s patience shows up through Jonathan India drawing 51 walks and Adam Frazier adding 22, which tilts the pitch-count game and brings the run-scoring chance their way. I’ve been around too long to overthink it—better arm, deeper bats, and the cleaner club wins; got the guts to ride the short road chalk with me?

I’m backing St. Louis because McGreevy’s 1.18 WHIP keeps traffic light, and Bryan Reynolds’ 141 strikeouts in 483 at-bats tell me this Pirates lineup can be had by strike-throwers. On the other side, Oviedo’s 1.33 WHIP puts extra men on, and Alec Burleson’s 61 strikeouts in 414 at-bats means the Cards will keep the ball in play and cash those chances. Sure, McGreevy allows a .268 average, but with Reynolds at .244 the Pirates’ damage profile is limited, so I’m laying the short price at home—got the guts to ride with me?

I'm backing the Rangers ML because Jacob deGrom keeps traffic off the bases with a 0.93 WHIP, which suffocates innings before they start. His 148 strikeouts in 140.1 innings punish an Angels heart that swings through too much. José Soriano allows a .252 average, and his 1.38 WHIP invites the extra hitter that turns a Texas rally. If there's a worry the Rangers' bats run hot-cold, deGrom's .197 opponent average keeps this in a low-scoring lane where one Seager swing or a García gapper is enough—have the guts to ride with me.

I’m backing Seattle on the moneyline because their thunder fits this matchup at home. JP Sears carries a 4.94 ERA and a .263 opponents’ average, which invites damage from a lineup that doesn’t need many mistakes to make you pay. Cal Raleigh has 49 homers and Eugenio Suárez sits at 40, so one mistake can flip this game. I get the risk with Bryce Miller’s 1.51 WHIP, but San Diego’s supporting bats haven’t been punishing, with Elias Díaz stuck at .198, so the traffic is less likely to turn into crooked numbers tonight—have the guts to ride with the heavier bats.

I’m riding Detroit because Skubal is the kind of ace who travels; 200 strikeouts in 159.1 innings tells you hitters don’t square him up. He’s held opponents to a .197 average, which squeezes a swing-prone A’s core like Brent Rooker, who’s already piled up 126 strikeouts. On the flip side, J.T. Ginn’s 4.95 ERA and 1.37 WHIP invite traffic, and Detroit has patience at the top with Gleyber Torres drawing 66 walks to turn baserunners into runs. Yes, laying road chalk can be a sweat, but Skubal’s 0.87 WHIP points to seven strong and keeps the bullpen out of the crossfire, which blunts Oakland’s chance to steal a one-run game.

I’m backing Cincinnati at plus money because Hunter Greene’s 2.63 ERA and 0.93 WHIP tell me he’s controlling counts and choking off traffic—have the guts to ride with me. The Dodgers’ current bats show holes—Andy Pages has 108 strikeouts in 473 at-bats—and Dalton Rushing’s 45 punchouts in 107 trips pair with Greene’s 91 strikeouts over 72 innings to tilt the whiff battle our way. On the other side, Emmet Sheehan’s 4.17 ERA leaves a window for Cincinnati’s table-setters, and Elly De La Cruz’s 140 hits can force him into stretch work. Sure, the Reds can run hot and cold—Elly’s 143 strikeouts show the risk—but Greene’s .199 opponent average says a low-scoring script still favors us if he keeps L.A. quiet.
