The read
Utah rolls into Frost Bank Center at 1-5, without Jaren Jackson Jr. or Jusuf Nurkic, to face a 4-2 Spurs team whose big man just went 29, 36 and 43. The book wants San Antonio by 17 or more. I'm not paying that.
The Spurs have won by 17-plus once in six games: a 27-point rout of a Sacramento team that hasn't won yet. Their other wins came against Dallas without Cooper Flagg and Kyrie Irving (+16), Minnesota without Anthony Edwards and Rudy Gobert (+10), and Utah in overtime (+6). Against Houston and Oklahoma City, they lost.
That Utah game was tied 105-105 at the end of regulation, and the Jazz didn't have Lauri Markkanen. There are fair caveats. San Antonio was on the second night of a road back-to-back. Utah hit 15 of 39 threes and 18 of 19 free throws, while the Spurs went 12 of 38 from deep. Normalize the shooting and San Antonio gains roughly 10 points. Add the home floor and fresh legs and I still see a comfortable Spurs win, not a 17-point one, especially with Markkanen back.
The fourth quarters matter too. The Spurs led Sacramento 107-80 after three and won by 27, so the bench played the fourth to a 23-23 draw. They've led by more than 16.5 after three quarters exactly once. Even in its two blowout losses, Utah played the fourth even or better: 26-24 against Portland, 24-25 at Memphis. San Antonio has to build this lead by the end of the third, and the back door stays open.
What can burn this: Wembanyama shot 14 of 25 against Jaxson Hayes and Mo Bamba in the first meeting, and the Spurs won the paint 54-34. Utah has 106 turnovers in six games. Markkanen went 3 of 14 in his return from a wrist sprain and fouled out. The Jazz lost by 22 at home on Saturday and dropped their only road game by 20.
If Markkanen is scratched, I'd stay away. If he plays, this is a lean built on the number, not on Utah being good. Take the points.

The research
The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.
HEAD-TO-HEAD
SAS won last season's series 2-1
2-1San Antonio won two of three against Utah last season, by 5.7 a game. That is a small sample with modest margins. Both teams are on two days of rest, so there is no schedule edge, and last season's results carry only light weight.
REPLACEMENT
Tobias Harris is OUT for SAS
OUTHarris sits with a left calf strain, and this was already flagged before Saturday's game, so it is a carryover absence. Calf strains tend to linger, and a team that has played without him recently should have its rotation sorted. The bigger edge is in props for whoever has been absorbing his minutes.
Jusuf Nurkic is OUT for UTA
OUTUtah is without Jusuf Nurkic at San Antonio with a tear of the plate under his right second toe. Earlier reporting had him missing at least four games, so this is an ongoing absence and the line should already reflect it. For bettors, the Jazz frontcourt rotation is thinner, so lean on what Utah has shown in recent games without him rather than on season-long numbers.
Jayden Quaintance is OUT for SAS
OUTJayden Quaintance is out for San Antonio after right knee surgery, a long-term absence that has not slowed the Spurs' four-game winning streak.
Trey Alexander is OUT for UTA
OUTTrey Alexander is with Utah's G League affiliate on his two-way deal and will not play at San Antonio. He also missed a game in late October with a left side injury. No betting impact.
Jaren Jackson Jr. is OUT for UTA
OUTUtah is without Jaren Jackson Jr. at San Antonio with a torn right MCL, diagnosed in late October. He is a starting big and rim protector, and with Nurkic also out, the Jazz frontcourt is short tonight. The Spurs' inside scoring is the spot to watch in this matchup.
Kobe Bufkin is OUT for UTA
OUTKobe Bufkin is with Utah's G League affiliate on a two-way deal. No betting impact.
Harrison Ingram is OUT for UTA
OUTHarrison Ingram is with Utah's G League affiliate on a two-way deal. No betting impact.
SITUATIONAL
Both sides on 2 days rest
2d bothUtah and San Antonio both have two days of rest, so there is no schedule edge. Current form should carry this one.

Props on this game
2- GARY'S PICKAIRIOUS BAILEYREBOUNDS OVER 5.5
I get plus money on a kid who keeps clearing this number. Bailey has pulled 7, 6, 10, 12 and 7 boards in his last five, and the one game he fell short he played only 22 minutes before sitting the rest of the night. Utah's frontcourt is thin.
Jaren Jackson Jr. and Jusuf Nurkic are out, and Jaxson Hayes and Mo Bamba are splitting the center minutes, so Bailey is crashing from the wing as a second big. The minutes are locked in too: 37, 40, 34 and 29 recently, and Utah played him 37 in a 22 point loss to Portland.
A rebuilding team keeps its young core on the floor when the game gets away, so a blowout doesn't scare me here. San Antonio misses plenty of shots and plays four guards around Wembanyama, which leaves long rebounds on the perimeter where Bailey lives. At this price I only need him to repeat his normal night.
- GARY'S PICKLAURI MARKKANENPOINTS UNDER 19.5
Markkanen is back from a right wrist sprain, and his first game back looked like a shooter still finding his touch: 3 for 14 from the field and 2 for 11 from deep before fouling out with 13 points. Tonight he sees Wembanyama, the worst possible matchup for a jump shooter testing a sore wrist, with a Spurs team that blocked nine shots against Minnesota. Before the injury he went 18 and 16 in two of his three full games, with one big night at 28 against the Lakers, so this line asks for his ceiling.
The game script works against him as well. Utah is a big road dog, and in a lopsided second half a veteran is the first player Will Hardy will rest, while the rookies keep logging minutes. Keyonte George and Darryn Peterson are both taking plenty of shots, so Markkanen won't get every touch.
I'll take the near even price on the under.
