The read

Two tired teams meet at the Intuit Dome on the second night of a back-to-back, and the biggest question is a hip in the Raptors' locker room. Scottie Barnes went onto the injury report Monday afternoon after logging 36 minutes against the Lakers, and his status decides this bet.

If Barnes plays, I'm laying the points with Toronto. The Clippers are 1-5 and -44 on the season, and their losses came against short-handed teams. They lost by 26 at Minnesota without Anthony Edwards and by 16 at home to a Lakers team missing Luka Doncic. They lost by 12 at Golden State with Stephen Curry and Draymond Green out. Tonight they're thinner still. Rui Hachimura, who scored 24 Sunday, and Derrick Jones Jr. are both out. Max Strus is making his season debut on a possibly limited workload, and Darius Garland is playing through back tightness.

The matchup favors Toronto too. The Clippers have 126 turnovers in six games, and the Raptors have 76 steals. Toronto has scored at least 46 paint points every night, and the Clippers have allowed 58 or more in the paint three times in their last five. Toronto also stayed in Los Angeles after Sunday's game, while the Clippers flew home from the Bay Area.

The risks are real. Barnes has 98 points over his last three games on 41-of-71 shooting, and Rotoworld thinks Barnes could be on the wrong side of questionable. Without Barnes and Kawhi Leonard, the offense falls to RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley, who is 26-of-72 over his last five. Toronto's +47 margin shrinks to +4 once you take out the 43-point rout of Chicago. The Raptors are shooting 32% from three against the Clippers' 38.6%, and they've given up 18 threes in each of their last two games. A hot Clippers shooting night is how this one gets away.

My call: Raptors -3.5, once Barnes is confirmed active at about 8:30 PM ET. At -122 this is a steep price, so it's a Barnes-in bet only. If Barnes sits, I'm off it entirely, and I wouldn't flip to a Clippers team this sloppy and short-handed.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

  • LAC won last season's series 2-0

    2-0

The Clippers beat Toronto twice last season, by 14.5 a game. Two games is a thin sample. Both teams played yesterday, so fatigue is even, and both have rotation players in doubt: Poeltl for Toronto and Derrick Jones Jr. for the Clippers. Those two statuses matter more for tonight than last season's results.

REPLACEMENT

  • Yanic Konan Niederhauser is OUT for LAC

    OUT

Yanic Konan Niederhauser is out for the Clippers with a foot issue, one more absence on a roster already missing Beal, Ingram and Strus.

  • Kawhi Leonard is OUT for TOR

    OUT

Toronto is without Kawhi Leonard for at least three to four weeks with a knee injury. He is the team's best scorer, so his shots go to others, and the Raptors at the Clippers become a team leaning on secondary creators. Long absences like this get priced in fast; the first few games are where the number may lag.

  • Bradley Beal is OUT for LAC

    OUT

Bradley Beal is out for the Clippers with knee inflammation. He is one of several missing pieces, and the Clippers have lost five straight while short-handed.

  • Max Strus is OUT for LAC

    OUT

Max Strus is out for the Clippers with a foot issue, though he has been practicing in 5-on-5 work in the G League. His return may be close, but tonight he adds to a long injury list.

  • Brandon Ingram is OUT for LAC

    OUT

Brandon Ingram is out for the Clippers as he continues recovering from an Achilles injury and has been sent to the G League. His absence leaves the scoring load on fewer players, with Rui Hachimura's line set well above his average.

  • Jordan Miller is OUT for LAC

    OUT

Jordan Miller is out for the Clippers after surgery on a torn left rotator cuff, with a re-evaluation in six months. A long-term absence the market has already absorbed.

  • Nate Bittle is OUT for TOR

    OUT

Toronto's Nate Bittle stays out with a foot injury and has no timetable. He is a depth piece, and his absence has been in place for a while.

  • Derrick Jones Jr. is Day-To-Day for LAC

    Day-To-Day

Jones left Sunday's game against the Clippers with a right knee issue and is day-to-day. A knee injury on a back-to-back makes him a real doubt tonight. He is a wing defender, so his status matters for Toronto's scorers.

  • Jakob Poeltl is Day-To-Day for TOR

    Day-To-Day

Poeltl is day-to-day with a shoulder issue and missed Sunday's game against the Lakers. Toronto is on a back-to-back, which makes a quick return less likely. If he sits again, Toronto is thin at center against the Clippers.

SITUATIONAL

  • Both sides on a back-to-back (played yesterday)

    1d both

Toronto and the Clippers both played yesterday, so both are on a back-to-back and neither has a rest edge. Both teams have players in doubt after Sunday, Poeltl and Derrick Jones Jr., so tired legs and thin rotations may affect the total.

STREAK

  • LAC has lost 5 straight

    L5

The Clippers have lost 5 straight by 13.8 a game, 1-5 over their last six. The injury list explains a lot: Brandon Ingram, Bradley Beal, Max Strus, Jordan Miller and Yanic Konan Niederhauser are all out tonight. Until bodies come back, this is a thin roster, and Toronto gets them at full stretch.

    RJ Barrett

    -108 · CASHED · ACTUAL 26

    Toronto Raptors

Barrett has been the steadiest scorer on this roster since Kawhi went down. He put up 20 at Minnesota on a night nobody else could buy a bucket, 25 against Orlando, and 22 with 10 boards at the Lakers last night. The one dud was 9 against Orlando, and that was the night Scottie took 34 shots and swallowed the offense.

Tonight sets up well for him either way. If Barnes sits with the hip, Barrett becomes the first option and the volume is his. If Barnes plays on a sore hip in the second game of a back-to-back, I expect him to be less aggressive than the 41 point version, and that leaves more touches for RJ.

The matchup helps too. The Clippers are without Derrick Jones Jr., their best wing defender, and without Hachimura, so the size on the perimeter is thin. Strus is making his season debut on a limited workload after a plantar fascia tear, which hardly makes him the guy to slow a strong left hander driving downhill. Barrett lives at the rim and at the line, and a tired, short-handed home team that fouls in the paint is the right opponent for that. I'll lay the small price on 20.

    Immanuel Quickley
    Assists over 6.5

    +126 · LOST · ACTUAL 2

    Toronto Raptors

Plus money on a number Quickley has been clearing almost every time he plays a normal game. He had 7, 8 and 7 in the last three, and 7 against Chicago before that. The Minnesota game with 2 was a blowout where the whole offense stalled.

The situation pushes the ball into his hands. Barnes is a real playmaker, and if the hip keeps him out or limits him, Quickley runs more of the half court. Poeltl's shoulder is also a question, and Toronto's offense with the smaller bigs leans on guards creating off the dribble and kicking out.

The pace angle matters as well. The Clippers have been giving the ball away constantly, 24 against the Lakers, 26 at Oklahoma City and at the Lakers, and Toronto loves to run off live turnovers. This team has piled up 31 to 35 assists in three of its last four games, and the point guard is the one collecting the transition dimes. Even with tired legs on the back end of a back-to-back, assists hold up better than shooting. At +126 I'll take him to get to 7.
