The read

A winless Kings team limps into American Airlines Center on the fourth stop of a road trip. Dallas is waiting with two days of rest and a home crowd. Kyrie Irving is expected to sit, and that's the only thing keeping this from being a bigger play.

Sacramento has been run off the floor away from home. The Kings are 0-4 on the road, losing by 12, 25, 27 and 31. That 25-point loss came against a Clippers team that dropped its other five games. Their only loss inside this number all season was by 8, at home, against Portland.

The defense is the problem. Opponents are shooting 51.9% from the field and 39.0% from three against Sacramento, and scoring 128.3 points a game. Dallas holds teams to 45.5% and 29.7%. The Kings also give up about 59 paint points a night, and Daniel Gafford has been finishing almost everything around the rim.

Then there's the third quarter. Sacramento has been outscored by a combined 62 points coming out of halftime, and by 10 or more in four of six games. Leads tend to grow against this team, not shrink. The setup gets worse from there: - one day of rest after a 31-point loss in Memphis - Sabonis trade chatter breaking hours before tip - a bench where Malik Monk and Emanuel Sharp have shot a combined 11-48

If Zach LaVine's elbow keeps him out, Monk's role gets bigger, which helps Dallas.

The risk is real. Without Irving, Cooper Flagg is the only true creator, and Flagg is 6-22 from three in the four games with a box score. Dallas plays slow and turns it over 17.2 times a game, and two of its four wins came by 4 and 5. Sacramento's fourth quarters have been nearly even, so a late backdoor cover is possible. Domantas Sabonis on the glass against a Dallas frontcourt without Dereck Lively II is a concern too.

Run each team's offense against the other's defense and Dallas grades out about 10 to 11 points better before home court. Take a few off for Irving and the edge is thin, but it's there. Mavericks, laying the points.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

  • SAC won last season's series 2-1

    2-1

Sacramento won two of three against Dallas last season, by 4.3 a game. Three close games is close to an even matchup. With LaVine, Cardwell and Irving all questionable, tonight depends more on who suits up than on last season.

REPLACEMENT

  • Maxime Raynaud is OUT for SAC

    OUT

Sacramento is without Maxime Raynaud at Dallas with a right kneecap subluxation. Recent reports said he was progressing, so a return may not be far off. Tonight it is one of several Kings absences, which matters more as a group than on its own.

  • Santi Aldama is OUT for DAL

    OUT

Santi Aldama is out for Dallas after right knee surgery, and Dereck Lively II is out too. With two bigs missing, watch who picks up frontcourt minutes and rebounds against Sacramento.

  • Dereck Lively II is OUT for DAL

    OUT

Dereck Lively II is out for Dallas, and Santi Aldama is out as well. Dallas will lean on other bigs for rim protection and rebounding against Sacramento.

  • Tarik Biberovic is OUT for DAL

    OUT

Tarik Biberovic is out for Dallas against Sacramento with right heel bursitis after being listed out a day earlier. It is a depth absence and should not move the number.

  • Ben Simmons is OUT for SAC

    OUT

Ben Simmons is out for Sacramento after surgery to repair his right Achilles tendon, a season-altering injury. The Kings will be without him for a long time, so the market has already moved past him.

  • Keegan Murray is OUT for SAC

    OUT

Keegan Murray is out for Sacramento at Dallas with left ankle capsulitis, and late October reporting said he would be re-evaluated in 10 to 14 days. He is a starting forward, and with Simmons and Raynaud also out, the Kings are short on bodies at the forward spots.

  • Sergio De Larrea is OUT for DAL

    OUT

Sergio de Larrea is out for Dallas against Sacramento with a right knee sprain, per Dusty May. He is a depth guard, so the effect is on the Mavericks' backcourt minutes more than the result.

  • Sean Pedulla is OUT for SAC

    OUT

Sean Pedulla is with Sacramento's G League affiliate on a two-way deal. No betting impact.

  • Zach LaVine is Questionable for SAC

    Questionable

LaVine is questionable with right elbow inflammation and soreness. He is a top scorer for Sacramento, so his status affects the side and the total. Wait for word before betting this game.

  • Kyrie Irving is Questionable for DAL

    Questionable

Irving is questionable with left knee injury management. That label usually means the team is managing his workload. He is the biggest swing for Dallas, so wait for his status before betting this game.

  • Dylan Cardwell is Questionable for SAC

    Questionable

Cardwell is questionable with a left calf strain. Calf strains often linger, so lean toward him being limited or out. He is a depth big, so the effect on Sacramento is mostly in the frontcourt rotation, alongside LaVine's own questionable tag.

SITUATIONAL

  • DAL on 3d, SAC on 2d

    3d vs 2d

Dallas has three days off to Sacramento's two, a small home edge on the schedule. One day rarely decides a game. Both teams have bigger names in doubt, Irving for Dallas and LaVine for Sacramento, so let the injury report settle first.

STREAK

  • SAC has lost 6 straight

    L6

SAC lost its last 6 by an average of 19; their last-10 mark is 0-6.

  • DAL has won 3 straight

    W3

3 wins in a row for DAL (11-point average margin), sitting 4-2 over their last 6.

    Sacramento Kings

Sabonis has been the one steady thing on a team that has lost every game. He has stayed on the glass in every kind of game: blowouts, close losses, nights with five fouls, nights against Edey and against Zion. He has not had a game this season where the boards dried up, and he is playing heavy minutes because there is nobody behind him. Raynaud is out, and Cardwell has not played a game yet. Even if Cardwell is active tonight, Christie has no reason to cut into his best player's minutes.

Dallas is a good spot for this. Lively is out and Aldama has not debuted, so the Mavericks' size starts and ends with Gafford, who plays mid to high twenties in minutes and gets into foul trouble. Dallas also takes a lot of threes and misses plenty of them. Without Kyrie there is less shot creation, which means more long rebounds coming off contested looks. P.J. Washington will crash, but nobody on that roster boxes out Sabonis for 36 minutes. The trade noise is just noise. He plays hard every night, and rebounding comes down to effort and positioning. I'll take him to clear this at close to even money.

    Dallas Mavericks

Kyrie is doubtful, and Dallas is already talking about Wednesday in San Antonio for his return. That takes away close to twenty shots a night and puts the offense on Flagg's shoulders. He has handled that load well. In every full game he has played, he has scored in the high twenties or thirties, and he is getting to his spots at a high rate even without the three falling. Sasser and Clayton are not going to soak up the possessions Kyrie leaves behind. Marshall coming back helps with ball movement, but he won't take Flagg's shots.

The matchup suits him too. Sacramento has given up huge numbers in the paint all season. Teams have been living at the rim and in transition against the Kings, and that is exactly where Flagg does his scoring: downhill drives, putbacks, and trips to the line. The one risk is a blowout that sits him early, but a Dallas team without Kyrie is less likely to run away with this, and the Kings keep scoring enough to stay within reach for three quarters. I'm getting plus money on a featured scorer against the worst defense he has seen, so I'll take the over.
