The read

Portland rolls into Ball Arena on the second stop of a four-game road trip, without Ja Morant for weeks because of a Grade 2 hamstring strain. Denver opens a two-game homestand with its preferred starting five back together, and the market wants the Nuggets by 4.5. I'll take the points.

Denver hasn't earned the right to lay them at home. The Nuggets are 1-1 at Ball Arena and outscored by 14 there. They escaped New Orleans in overtime after trailing by 23, then lost by 20 to Golden State. Their season margin sits at -1.2 per game, and Jokić is feuding with his own crowd.

Denver's leaks line up with how Portland plays. The Nuggets average 16.6 turnovers and give up 22.2 points a night off them. Jokić alone has 21 giveaways in five games, and Portland just had 13 steals in Utah. Denver allows 13.2 offensive rebounds and 17.0 second-chance points per game. It also commits 20 fouls a game, while Portland averages 31.2 free-throw attempts and Avdija has four straight 20-point games.

Denver's best win was a shooting spike. It beat Phoenix by only 7 while hitting 20-37 from deep, and Murray and Braun made 14 of 18 of those attempts. Everyone else went 6-19. Jokić is 5-24 from three on the season, and DeRozan is 2-11 from the floor over his last two games. Portland, meanwhile, is holding opponents to 31.7% from three.

The risks are real: - Henderson is 3-21 from three and Lillard is 16-47, so the half-court creation runs through Avdija, Lillard and Holiday. - Portland built much of its +11.4 margin against Phoenix, Sacramento and Utah, who are a combined 2-14 in the games on file. Unbeaten Memphis beat the Blazers by 21 in Portland. - Clingan picked up 5 fouls in 15 minutes Saturday, and foul trouble against Jokić is Denver's cleanest path to covering. - Murray already has two 39-plus nights, and Denver has the extra day of rest.

Still, Denver has played one full game with its preferred five. It hasn't shown the ball security or defense to justify this cushion. I'm on Portland +4.5 at -115 with a normal-to-small stake.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

  • DEN won last season's series 3-1

    3-1

Denver won three of four against Portland last season by 18.3 a game, a wide gap over a reasonable sample. Denver also has the extra day of rest tonight. Diallo is questionable with a wrist sprain, but he is a depth piece, so the bigger question for a bettor is whether a line this size already prices in last season's margins.

REPLACEMENT

  • Spencer Jones is OUT for DEN

    OUT

Spencer Jones is out for Denver with hamstring issues. A depth piece missing matters less than who is on the floor, and Nikola Jokic is the one carrying the load against Portland.

  • Shaedon Sharpe is OUT for POR

    OUT

Shaedon Sharpe will not play. Injury/Illness - Right Meniscus Surgery (2026-11-02, POR@DEN). Prior reporting (2026-08-24): Sharpe suffered a torn meniscus in his knee…

  • Julian Strawther is OUT for DEN

    OUT

Denver is without Julian Strawther against Portland with a left knee sprain, diagnosed in mid October. He is a bench wing, so the effect is on the Nuggets' second unit shooting minutes more than on the side.

  • Ja Morant is OUT for POR

    OUT

Portland is without Ja Morant at Denver with a Grade 2 left hamstring strain, an injury that usually costs weeks. The Blazers lose their main creator, so their offense runs through other guards, and Denver gets an easier backcourt matchup.

  • Jayson Kent is OUT for POR

    OUT

Jayson Kent is with Portland's G League affiliate on a two-way deal. No betting impact.

  • John Tonje is OUT for POR

    OUT

John Tonje is with Portland's G League affiliate on a two-way deal. No betting impact.

  • Alpha Diallo is Questionable for DEN

    Questionable

Diallo is questionable with a right wrist sprain. He is a depth wing for Denver, so his status moves little beyond a few bench minutes. Denver also has the rest edge tonight.

SITUATIONAL

  • DEN on 3d, POR on 2d

    3d vs 2d

Denver has three days of rest to Portland's two, which adds a small edge to a home team that won the series 3-1 last season. One day is a minor factor by itself. It fits with the rest of Denver's case tonight but should not carry a bet alone.

    TOUMANI CAMARA3-POINTERS OVER 2.5
    NBAPortland Trail Blazers· -104

    Toumani Camara
    3-Pointers over 2.5

    -104 · CASHED · ACTUAL 3

    Portland Trail Blazers

Camara has taken his threes every night this season: nine at Utah, eight against Memphis, ten in Sacramento, seven against Phoenix. He has made at least four in most of those games. His role is set. He spots up in the corners while Avdija, Lillard and now Henderson attack the paint, and he gets enough clean looks that three makes is close to his normal night.

Denver gives up a lot of threes. Golden State hit 22 against them and Phoenix hit 18 on Friday. Jokic plays drop coverage and the wings help on drives, which leaves exactly the shot Camara takes. With Morant out, Portland has one fewer player who gets all the way to the rim, so expect more drive and kick and more shots for the corner shooters. Camara is also playing more, 31 minutes at Utah, because the rotation tightened without Morant. A volume shooter against a defense that leaves him open, priced close to even money, is a bet I'll make.

  • GARY'S PICK
    DENI AVDIJAPOINTS OVER 22.5
    NBAPortland Trail Blazers· -108

    Deni Avdija
    Points over 22.5

    -108 · CASHED · ACTUAL 28

    Portland Trail Blazers

Avdija runs Portland's offense now. He has scored 24, 24, 23 and 26 in his last four, and the lone exception was the 41 point blowout of Phoenix, when he sat the entire fourth quarter. His floor comes from the line: 10 of 13 at Utah, 8 of 12 against Memphis, 9 of 12 in Sacramento. He gets there by putting his shoulder into defenders. That holds up on a night his jumper is off, and it travels to any building.

Morant is out for weeks with the hamstring, so more of the offense goes to Avdija, and the Utah box shows it. Denver's best option against him is Gordon, but Gordon also has to help on Clingan's rolls and chase Camara off the arc, so Avdija will get some switches onto Braun and DeRozan, who are smaller. If Portland trails at altitude, he stays on the floor late and keeps getting the ball. At this number I only need his normal night.
