The read
Monday night at Target Center, a fully healthy 1-5 Bucks team visits a Minnesota side playing without Anthony Edwards and waiting on LaMelo Ball's right wrist. The number is 9.5, and Milwaukee hasn't given me a reason to take it.
The Bucks have nobody on the injury report and the same five have started all six games, yet they're losing by 13.2 a night (113.0 scored, 126.2 allowed). Their only win came over an Indiana team on the second night of a back-to-back without Nembhard and Zubac. They lost to a Chicago team that has dropped all five of its other games. They've lost by more than 9.5 in four of six, including both road games. In the last two, both blowouts at home, Herro, Kuzma, Turner and Jaquez never came back after the third quarter.
The second quarter is where it breaks. Over the last three games, Milwaukee is 77-76 in first quarters and 54-114 in second quarters. Jenkins said it after Cleveland: "the second quarter got away from us."
Minnesota doesn't win close. All four Wolves wins came by 22 or more, including 127-101 over the Clippers without Edwards. The matchups fit. The Bucks average 16.7 turnovers and give up 19.3 points off them, while Minnesota scored 29 and 28 off turnovers in its last two. Opponents score 52.3 in the paint on Milwaukee. Gobert's return also takes away the Bucks' one strength, the offensive glass (14.5 offensive boards a game). The night Gobert sat, San Antonio scored 60 in the paint and won the boards 49-38.
The risks are real. Minnesota is 1-2 without Edwards and only about +3.6 per 100 possessions. Tonight is game 3 in 4 nights, after Kuminga (40), McDaniels (39) and Dosunmu (38) logged heavy minutes Saturday. Ball was reported downgraded today. He's their best remaining creator, with 24 points and 7 assists against the Clippers, but he also leads the NBA with 30 fouls. And Milwaukee's bench has already rallied in garbage time.
This play is for Ball active. If he's ruled out on the inactive list, I'd stay off it rather than back Milwaukee.

The research
The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.
HEAD-TO-HEAD
MIN won last season's series 2-0
2-0Minnesota beat Milwaukee in both meetings last season, by 18 a game. That is only two games, and a margin that big usually includes some blowout noise. Tonight is the first meeting this season with both teams on two days of rest, so the schedule gives neither side an edge and current form should do most of the work.
REPLACEMENT
Donte DiVincenzo is OUT for MIN
OUTDonte DiVincenzo is out for Minnesota after Achilles surgery. This is a long-term absence, and his missing minutes go toward the rest of the backcourt, including LaMelo Ball.
Anthony Edwards is OUT for MIN
OUTMinnesota is without Anthony Edwards against Milwaukee after right knee arthroscopy in late October. He is the Timberwolves' top scorer, so the rest of the roster has to carry the scoring load. The first games without a star are the ones where lines can lag on how much the offense drops.
SITUATIONAL
Both sides on 2 days rest
2d bothMilwaukee and Minnesota are both on two days of rest, so there is no schedule edge. Minnesota's sweep last season and current form carry more weight.

Props on this game
2- GARY'S PICKJADEN MCDANIELSPOINTS OVER 18.5
With Anthony Edwards out, McDaniels has become a real scorer for Minnesota. The three games since the surgery went 19, 23 and 19, on good shot quality and steady volume, and he played 33 minutes in the Clippers blowout and still got to 23. Finch said the Edwards void gets filled by committee, and McDaniels is the steadiest member of that committee.
The matchup helps. Milwaukee has been carved up inside all season: 60 paint points to Cleveland, 62 to Chicago, 70 to Washington, and 127 or more allowed in four of six games. McDaniels does most of his work cutting and attacking closeouts, which is exactly where the Bucks leak. If LaMelo Ball sits with the wrist, more possessions run through the wings and this number gets easier. If Ball plays, McDaniels already cleared it twice alongside him.
The risks are fouls, since he is second in the league in them, and a lopsided score shortening his night. A line under 20 against this defense is a fair price for a player whose role just got bigger.
- GARY'S PICKRYAN ROLLINSPOINTS UNDER 13.5
Rollins has been the least reliable scorer in the Milwaukee starting five. The last six went 9, 4, 19, 15, 11 and 9, and the shooting underneath those numbers is rough: 2 for 14 against Houston, 4 for 11 against Cleveland, 4 for 14 in Washington. Turner said it himself: shots aren't falling, and Rollins is the clearest example.
Tonight sets up badly for him. Minnesota guards the perimeter well, holding six of seven opponents to 12 or fewer made threes, and it can throw Dosunmu and McDaniels at the ball handlers. Herro and Jaquez take the first scoring looks, and Rollins makes most of his contribution as a passer, with seven assists Saturday against nine points.
Game script matters too. Milwaukee is a 9.5 point dog that lost its last two by 25 and 32, and in those games Jenkins pulled the starters in the third quarter. Rollins logged 17 and 26 minutes. A short night with cold shooting fits the under, and getting plus money on it makes the bet.
