The read

Five days after Detroit beat Charlotte by 8 on the second night of a back-to-back, the Pistons visit Spectrum Center on two days' rest. The Hornets are playing their third game in four nights, and Coby White is making a season debut.

The rest situation has flipped. On Oct. 28, Cade Cunningham logged 39 minutes a night after playing 36 at New York, and Detroit still won 97-89. Tonight the Pistons are fresh. Charlotte is coming off a back-to-back that ended with a 13-0 Philadelphia run in the fourth quarter, after the Hornets had led 83-77 through three.

Turnovers are Charlotte's biggest problem and Detroit's best weapon. The Hornets average 18.7 a game. Detroit forced 25 in the first meeting with 13 steals, then 24 at Brooklyn with 14 steals. Charles Lee has publicly flagged the costly turnovers.

The shooting doesn't help. Charlotte is 92-for-311 from three (29.6%), and Dennis Schröder went 1-for-11 against Philadelphia. Brandon Miller is carrying the scoring for a 3-4 team.

Detroit's road wins came by 16, 13 and 17, and all five of its wins cleared this number. The Pistons are +48 on the season. The Hornets are -57.

On night one, White's return adds uncertainty more than help. Reports expect a minutes limit that nobody has confirmed, and it isn't settled whether White or Schröder starts at point guard. A shuffled backcourt against Detroit's active hands looks like more turnovers, not fewer.

The risks are real. Without Jalen Duren, Detroit has lost the boards in each of its last three games, including 45-33 to Charlotte. The Pistons are shooting 34-for-111 from three (30.6%) over that span. The first meeting was 85-79 with 5:00 left. Naz Reid played only 13 minutes that night and is expected to play both halves tonight. A slow pace could keep this inside six.

Still, the rest, the turnover matchup and Detroit's road form all point the same way. I'm laying the 5.5, but I wouldn't chase it higher.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

  • DET won last season's series 3-0

    3-0

Detroit swept Charlotte last season and won the three games by 16.7 points a game on average. That is a lopsided series, but three games is a small sample and both rosters have turned over since. Tonight is the first meeting this season, so use last season as a hint about the matchup, then check current form and Detroit's injury report before leaning on it.

REPLACEMENT

  • Kon Knueppel is OUT for CHA

    OUT

Kon Knueppel is out for Charlotte with a left hamstring strain. With Grant Williams also sidelined, Brandon Miller is in line for more shots, which is the angle to watch on his scoring line.

  • Grant Williams is OUT for CHA

    OUT

Grant Williams is out for Charlotte with a right hamstring strain, and Kon Knueppel is out too. That leaves the Hornets thinner on the wing and frontcourt against Detroit.

  • Jalen Duren is OUT for DET

    OUT

Detroit is without Jalen Duren at Charlotte with a right hamstring strain, due for re-evaluation two weeks after late October reporting. Duren is the starting center, so the Pistons lose rebounding and rim protection. Charlotte's work on the glass and inside is the place to look in this matchup.

  • Ugonna Onyenso is OUT for DET

    OUT

Ugonna Onyenso is with Detroit's G League affiliate on a two-way deal. With Duren out, Detroit is thinner at center, but Onyenso was not in line for those minutes tonight.

  • Elijah Harkless is Questionable for DET

    Questionable

Harkless is on a two-way deal and his questionable tag is about G League assignment, not injury. That rarely affects an NBA game, so it should not change your read.

  • Isaac Jones is Questionable for DET

    Questionable

Jones is on a two-way deal and his questionable tag is about G League assignment, not injury. That rarely affects an NBA game, so it should not change your read.

  • Isaiah Joe is Questionable for DET

    Questionable

Joe is questionable with a right hip contusion. A bruise is usually a short-term issue, so he has a fair chance to play. He is a shooter off the bench, so his status mostly affects Detroit's second unit.

SITUATIONAL

  • DET on 3d, CHA on 2d

    3d vs 2d

Detroit has three days off and Charlotte has two, a one-day edge for the road team. One extra day this early in the season is a small factor, smaller than a rotation player sitting. Use it as a tiebreaker on top of Detroit's sweep last season, and check whether Isaiah Joe plays.

STREAK

  • CHA has lost 3 straight

    L3

Charlotte has lost 3 straight by 9.7 a game and is 3-4 over its last seven. Kon Knueppel and Grant Williams are both out tonight against Detroit. Three games is a short run, but the injuries make the near term harder.

    John Collins
    Points under 12.5

    -117 · CASHED · ACTUAL 4

    Detroit Pistons

The version of Detroit that has played since Duren went down has pushed Collins to the edge of the offense. Reed has taken over at center and keeps getting rewarded for his activity, Cunningham runs everything, and Robinson gets the catch and shoot looks. Collins has been left cleaning up: 2 points at New York, 4 against this same Charlotte team, 4 in Brooklyn. In those three games he took 18 shots combined and went 0 for 5 from deep. The one big night in that stretch came at Philadelphia with Ausar Thompson out, which opened touches that aren't there when Thompson is on the floor handling and cutting.

It also gets tighter tonight. Holland just went for 18 off the bench and the coaching staff is expected to keep feeding him and Huerter with Joe still out, which eats into the forward minutes and the secondary shots Collins would need. Charlotte held him to 2 for 8 in 18 minutes six days ago, with Diabate and Kalkbrenner walling off the paint. He needs a hot shooting night from outside to clear 12.5, and nothing in this rotation is pointing that way. I'll lay the juice on the under.

  • GARY'S PICK
    CADE CUNNINGHAMASSISTS UNDER 8.5
    NBADetroit Pistons· -112

    Cade Cunningham
    Assists under 8.5

    -112 · CASHED · ACTUAL 7

    Detroit Pistons

Cunningham has been remarkably steady as a passer, and that steadiness is the problem for the over. He has stacked up 8 assists four times, 7 against Charlotte last Wednesday and 4 in Brooklyn. The book has set the number one notch above his ceiling so far, so he needs his best passing night of the season to cash.

The matchup doesn't help him get there. The first meeting with Charlotte was a slow, grinding game at roughly 92 possessions, and with Coby White back tonight the Hornets add a ball handler who should calm down the turnover problem that has fed transition chances against them. Detroit's shooters have also been cold, going 12 for 41 from three in Brooklyn and 13 for 33 against Charlotte, and a lot of Cunningham's assist ceiling depends on Robinson and Huerter knocking those down. Without Joe the spacing thins out further, so more of his possessions end with him scoring or getting to the line. Another night in the 7 or 8 range is the most natural outcome, and I'm happy to sit under at a near even price.
