The read

Brooklyn walks into Madison Square Garden less than 24 hours after snapping an 0-5 start in Indiana, and the Knicks have to win by 15. I'll take the points.

This is a bet against the number, not a bet on Brooklyn. New York is 2-4 and has been outscored by 4 points across six games. Its biggest win is 14 over Detroit, and the Knicks needed a 27-point lead to get there before the Pistons won the fourth quarter 34-23. Per 100 possessions, the Knicks are at -0.7 and the Nets at -7.7. That's about a 7-point gap, in Knicks games that have averaged roughly 98 possessions. Home floor and two days of rest help New York, but not enough to stretch that gap to 14.5.

The Knicks' offense isn't built to run anybody off the floor right now. They're shooting 41.9% from the field, and Mike Brown admitted the team has to make up for its shooting in other areas. Brooklyn's biggest flaw is turnovers, at 19 a game. New York forces only about 13 and averages 7.3 steals. Detroit punished the Nets with 14 steals and 27 points off turnovers, and the Knicks don't play that way.

Brooklyn also tends to hang around. Four of its six games finished within eight points, including a one-point overtime loss at Boston. Mikel Brown Jr. is back after resting Sunday, which adds another ball handler even with a minutes limit.

The risks are real. This is the second night of a back-to-back and game 3 in 4 nights. Julius Randle and Michael Porter Jr. logged 37 and 36 minutes last night, and the Nets' last back-to-back ended in a 27-point loss to Indiana. Sunday's win came against a Pacers team missing Tyrese Haliburton, Ivica Zubac and more. Karl-Anthony Towns has a double-double in all six games, and New York averages 21 second-chance points. Brooklyn has lost by 15 or more twice.

Still, a Knicks team that hasn't won by this much once all season has to do it against a team that usually keeps it close. I'll take the number. Nets +14.5, at a normal-to-light stake.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

  • NYK won last season's series 4-0

    4-0

New York swept Brooklyn in all four meetings last season by 26 a game, about as one-sided as a series gets. This is the first meeting of the new season, so last season's results only go so far. Brooklyn is also on a back-to-back while New York has three days rest, which stacks another edge on the Knicks side.

REPLACEMENT

  • Tyler Bilodeau is OUT for BKN

    OUT

Brooklyn's Tyler Bilodeau is out at New York with a shoulder injury and missed the first three games of the season. It is a depth absence the Nets have been playing through since opening night.

  • Egor Demin is OUT for BKN

    OUT

Egor Demin will not play for Brooklyn at New York. The sheet gives no injury detail, only that the Nets picked up his third-year option. Check the final injury report for why before acting on it.

  • Mikel Brown Jr. is Day-To-Day for BKN

    Day-To-Day

Brown is day-to-day after resting Sunday in Indiana on the first night of a back-to-back, and the report said he should return for the second night. A rest day is a planned absence, so expect him back tonight against New York unless that changes.

  • Jose Alvarado is Questionable for NYK

    Questionable

Alvarado is questionable with a left ankle sprain. He plays backup point guard minutes for New York, so if he sits, the other guards absorb his time. Check his status before backing guard props in this one.

SITUATIONAL

  • BKN on a back-to-back, NYK rested

    B2B vs 3d

Brooklyn is on the second night of a back-to-back, while New York has had three days to rest. Add a Knicks sweep of last season's series, and the schedule tilts this one further toward the home side.

    New York Knicks

Towns has been the most reliable thing in this Knicks building so far. The jumper comes and goes, and the glass is there every night: 20 against Detroit, 14 against Orlando, 13 in Chicago, 12 in Philadelphia. Even the night he only logged 24 minutes against the Sixers he still cleared this number, so I'm not scared off by a big spread and a possible early hook.

The matchup sets up for him too. Brooklyn is on the second night of a back-to-back, their third game in four nights, and Randle and Porter both played heavy minutes in Indiana. Tired legs mean short jumpers, and this Nets team already misses plenty. They shot 30 of 73 last night and 31 of 77 against Detroit while firing nearly 40 threes a game. Long misses off the rim from a gassed team are exactly what a center at home with two days of rest feasts on. Sharpe can battle, and he also lives in foul trouble. I'll lay the small juice on Towns doing what he has done all season.

    New York Knicks

This number is priced off the Hart we saw in the first two weeks, and that guy hasn't shown up lately. His last three lines read 16, 13 and 14 combined. The scoring has dried up badly: 2 of 9 in Philadelphia, 1 of 6 in Chicago, and he is passing up looks rather than hunting them. The assists have sat around three a night with Brunson, Kolek and Shamet running the offense, so there is no playmaking cushion to bail him out.

The game script works in my favor too. The Knicks are laying 14.5 against a Brooklyn team running on fumes, and if this gets out of hand Mike Brown has every reason to rest his starters with Chicago coming Wednesday and talk around the team about fatigue already floating. Hart can always steal a few extra rebounds, and he would still need a big night on the boards plus a scoring bounce plus full minutes to get over. I don't see all three lining up, so I'm on the under.
