The read
Boston rolls into Toyota Center on the second night of a back-to-back, fresh off a Sunday matinee in Orlando, and without Paul George, who sits for rest. Houston had Sunday off and gets Fred VanVleet back. That's the setup, and I'm laying the points with the Rockets.
George is more than a scorer for this team. In the five games with full box scores, George averaged 17.2 points, 6.2 rebounds and 5.4 assists, with 8, 8 and 7 assists in the last three. Without that second ball-handler, Houston can load up on Jayson Tatum and make White, Pritchard, González and Walsh beat them. The Rockets have the wings for it in Amen Thompson, Jabari Smith Jr., Tari Eason, Kevin Durant and Marcus Smart, and they've racked up 11 or more steals in five of seven games. Pritchard's 28 and 30 both came against Chicago. Against New York, Brooklyn and Orlando, it was 15 points total on 6-of-23 shooting.
The records aren't equal either. Boston's five wins came against Orlando, Chicago twice, Brooklyn and New York, teams that are a combined 6-18. The one winning team Boston has faced, Detroit, erased a 22-point Celtics lead and won by 8. Houston is 3-1 against OKC, San Antonio and Dallas twice, all 4-2 teams, though OKC was badly short-handed.
Then there's the schedule. Tatum and White both played 34 minutes yesterday, and Boston's only other back-to-back finale needed overtime to beat Brooklyn by a point at home. Houston is 4-1 with an average margin of +11.8 when VanVleet starts, and 3-0 at home with wins by 21, 10 and 18.
Boston does have a path to a cover. With Clint Capela and Steven Adams out, Houston has no real center behind Alperen Sengun, so a fresh Mitchell Robinson and Neemias Queta can attack the glass. Tatum's 12 free-throw attempts a game slow runs down, and Houston's three-point shooting swings, like 7-of-29 at Dallas. Those are real risks, but not enough to flip me.
Road back-to-back, no George, rested home team. Rockets -5.5.

The research
The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.
HEAD-TO-HEAD
BOS and HOU split last season 1-1
1-1Boston and Houston split two games last season, 1-1. Two games is too small to say much. Houston has Sheppard and Capela both questionable, which matters more than last season's split.
REPLACEMENT
Devin Carter is OUT for BOS
OUTBoston's Devin Carter has mononucleosis and no timetable to return. Mono can keep players out for weeks, so assume he is gone for a while. The Celtics bench at Houston is thinner, which is a small factor at most.
Steven Adams is OUT for HOU
OUTHouston is without Steven Adams against Boston with a right soleus strain. He is a backup big who does a lot of work on the offensive glass, so the Rockets' rebounding edge off the bench takes a small hit.
Mitchell Robinson is OUT for BOS
OUTBoston's Mitchell Robinson is out at Houston. He was downgraded from questionable to out for rest on Sunday. He is a rebounding big, so the Celtics lose some size on a night when the Rockets also lack Steven Adams.
Quadir Copeland is OUT for HOU
OUTQuadir Copeland is with Houston's G League affiliate on a two-way deal. No betting impact.
Julian Phillips is OUT for HOU
OUTJulian Phillips is with Houston's G League affiliate on a two-way deal. No betting impact.
Clint Capela is Questionable for HOU
QuestionableCapela is questionable with a right ankle sprain. He is a rebounding big, so if he sits, Houston's frontcourt rotation shifts. That matters for rebounding props on both sides of this game.
Reed Sheppard is Questionable for HOU
QuestionableSheppard is questionable with a low back strain. Back issues can flare up with little warning. If he sits, Houston's guard minutes shift around, so wait for his status before playing props tied to their backcourt.
SITUATIONAL
BOS on a back-to-back, HOU rested
B2B vs 2dBoston comes in on no rest after a five-game winning streak, while Houston has had two days off. A hot road team on tired legs is the kind of spot where form and schedule pull in different directions.
STREAK
BOS has won 5 straight
W55 wins in a row for BOS (13-point average margin), sitting 5-1 over their last 6.

Props on this game
2- GARY'S PICKALPEREN SENGUNPOINTS REBOUNDS ASSISTS OVER 32.5
This is a big-man number set as if Houston had big men behind him. Capela is out with the ankle and Adams hasn't played since the San Antonio game, so the only center behind Sengun is Oscar Tshiebwe. That pushes Sengun toward the high-30s minutes he played against Atlanta, when he went for 29, 9 and 9. He came back Saturday from the back soreness with no restriction and put up 16, 9 and 9 against OKC even on a 6-of-17 night. When the shot isn't falling, the passing and the glass carry him past the line.
Every game he has finished this year has cleared 32.5, and most cleared it easily. The matchup helps too. Boston plays the second night of a back-to-back after an afternoon game in Orlando, Robinson returns from rest with his minutes unclear, and Queta has been the one taking the bulk of the work. With Paul George resting, Boston also loses a 6-rebound wing who helps on the defensive glass. Houston runs the half court through Sengun at the elbow, and VanVleet's return gives him a shooter to find off the short roll. At -106 I'll take the pace of a big man who has no one to share the floor time with.
- GARY'S PICKJAYSON TATUMASSISTS OVER 6.5
Paul George has been Boston's second creator, with 8, 8 and 7 assists in his last three games. With him resting tonight, that playmaking load falls mostly on Tatum. He is already sitting at 6, 7, 7, 8, 7 and 11 assists this season, and those came with George handling part of the creation. Take that away and Tatum has the ball more often, against a Houston defense built to make him give it up.
Amen Thompson and Jabari Smith are long enough to show bodies early and force him off his spots. Houston will gamble that Pritchard, Hauser and Scheierman can't beat them from deep, and that leaves Tatum kicking the ball out of the crowd. The risk is a tired Boston team missing open shots. They went 12 of 44 from three in Orlando, so I'm keeping the confidence moderate. Tatum has been logging 34 to 42 minutes, and with George out Mazzulla has no reason to cut that. More touches and more help defense coming his way put this over at a near even price.
